“As we reported back in March, IBM Corp is said to be readying the next release of its Unix operating system, AIX 5L V5.2, to get it into the market by October of this year. It is expected to deliver the kicker to this release sometime in the second half of 2003.” Read the report at TheRegister.
for linux ? are Am I wrong ?
The place I work for uses AIX 433 and is starting to consider switching to 5.1L in the near future. So 5.2 will not be in production next year.

yes, L stands for linux. they are introducing some linux compatability like the FS layout and files.
for example: “nsswitch.conf” is not present in 4.3.3 but it is in 5. Linux has nsswitch.conf so it seems that they are introducing some compatability
as they do not introduce /etc/ping ….

I’m not sure about that
what’s so bad about /etc/ping? enlighten me, I have never seen it
Is AIX pronounced A.I.X. or axe?
…A.I.X.
Well I guess binaries should not go in /etc as it is a config files place. I guess /etc is a tree that one could share on a network (like with diskless station), but I’m not enough of a SysAdmin to know it for sure.
What do you think Ludovic ?
Yes, /etc is usually directory for configuration files.
No, you don’t want to share it on network because each
system has it’s own configuration (e.g. /etc/hostname) and because it would be security hole (e.g. /etc/passwd and others).
Diskless clients work differently – using DNS/NIS/NFS.
I’m not sure who introduced /etc/ping first – SunOS 4.x or AIX, everybody now hates it but afraid to remove it as it may break something.
