As some of you may have noticed, we’ve been having some issues with captchas. The powers that be – which isn’t me, I don’t know anything about web development – are looking into it, and once we’ve pinpointed the problem we’ll get it fixed. It’s annoying us too, so we want this resolved as quickly as possible. OSNews readers just trying to visit the site to read some tech stuff should not be subjected to selecting squares with buses or crosswalks.
Our apologies for the annoyance, and I’ll update this post once the issue’s been resolved.
lol…
Was just coming here to comment on how the site whose owner hates AI is forcing its users to train AI…
Same! and had to solve a bunch of them before even being able to comment…
not to mention RSS feed in self hosted miniflux got broken…
RSS feed in general isn’t working since the Pinta 3.0 post. At least, it cannot be read by bazqux.
That’s what brought me here, thought it strange that there hadn’t been anything in the feed for a couple of days, the Pinta 3.0 post is the last one I saw too.
Miniflux is reporting this error for the feed: “Unable to detect feed format: parser: unable to detect feed format.”
Also AI bots have already solved these captcha (not recaptcha) since 2024 (supposedly 100% pass rate, so probably higher than a human), Obviously that does mean more CPU/GPU usage to solve it, still cheaper than employing a human to do it.
Is this not the reverse? The problem is that all websites are scanned by AI webbots to scrape their pages for AI training.
This check seems more to prevent that? That is, if Recaptchas are stopping web crawlers, which I believe they don’t anymore?
Else it could be a scheme by Google (I believe they are behind Recaptcha?) to find out which IP address is visiting what website.
That’s the reality of today’s web: no matter what you do… you help to train one or the other AI model… The only way to not do that is to not even open any web site.
It may be that osnews is being hit by “AI” crawlers and that led the powers that be to turn the captchas up to eleven? Do those powers have any statistics on that?
I just needed to check the “I’m no robot” checkbox.
It seems random to me; sometimes I just need to click the checkbox and I’m in, other times clicking the checkbox triggers a puzzle.
Lately it’s a puzzle every time I visit.
I had to click the I’m-not-a-robot button, and then I had to click all the tick-tack-toe boxes that had bits of a bicycle in them.
I believe I’ve isolated the issue to a plugin called “LiteSpeed Cache.” Hopefully, the issue should be resolved shortly.
CAPTCHA issue seems to be gone but RSS still complains about invalid format… could it be fixe
I believe the RSS problem is also because that URL is getting the recaptcha test…
Possibly. and oh! it seems it works now! <3
Can’t you use something different from recaptcha? Hcaptcha? I freaking hate recaptcha.
OMG the Singularity is here!!!111 We’re, uh, either all doomed or all going to Computer Heaven or both!
OSNews – your bastion of privacy and anti-authoritarianism. Protected by Google AI fingerprinting technology.
Seems a bit odd.
Yeah, that’s why it’s no longer there, and why we considered it a bug. A third party extension to speed up the site added the captcha, and as soon as we found out, we removed the extension.
Nothing odd about it.
Excellent!
