Today, 1st April 30 years ago, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak founded Apple Computer, one of the most influential (whether you like it or not) and recognizable (oh yes) companies in the tech industry. Various websites have articles in celebration of this landmark, here, here, here, and here. Happy 30th birthday, Apple. Now, chop chop, get us that Intel iBook.
Ah! Apple! You broke computers out from business and geek land, and made them into something every designer wanted. It’s a pity you had that hiccup from 1987-1997…but now it looks like you will take over the world. Maybe. Perhaps.
I wonder what you will announce for your birthday? Video iPod? Intel iBook? Whether we like it or not, we’re all curious to find out…
With such an important milestone it is odd that Apple has no mention of it on their site.

My first personal computer was an Apple //C+. I learned to program on it at the age of almost nine years old. Little did I know that my tappings on that keyboard would lead to a good paying job and a career later on in life writing software. All those hours spent using peek and poke were valuable after all it seems
Hurrah for Apple! I hope that they will be around for many years to come. I will never forget this company or how their computers affected my life.

Unfortunately, I have to agree.
I almost bought a PowerMac recently because I like OS X so much. (I need to run dual monitors, so their other systems are not an option).
However, after thinking about it for awhile, once again, I passed. When you look at what you are getting for $1,999, it’s not very impressive. For $1,999 they are only giving you 512 Mb of RAM, a 128 Mb video card, and a 160 Gb hard disk. For that kind of money, you can do a hell of a lot better with a dual core Athlon 64. You could easily quadruple the RAM, double the video memory, and double the hard disk space, and still have money left over.
It’s really sad to see Apple running the Mac into the ground. But unfortunately, that’s what they are doing. Because even people who really love OS X like me, simply can’t justify paying $1,999 for a system that is not even that impressive when we can get dual core Athlon 64 systems for half the price.

You are comparing to a $1000 white box PC. If you compare the cost to a SUN or HP-UX workstation, the 1999 doesn’t seem so bad.

I’m comparing to a system I could build myself, or have someone build for me. Such a system would leave the $1,999 PowerMac in the dust.
Unfortunately Apple chose not to give me the option of building my own system using just what I need and want.

Mac mini can’t run dual monitors. Otherwise I would.

I still think it’d be in Apple’s best interest to sell Mac OS X as an OS for generic x86 hardware, especially if it used 64bit extensions. Sure, people would pirate it, but people are pirating the hacked version now anyway, they may as well release it for the honest people out there as well!
If you think about it, that’s how Windows got so big, it was pretty much the only choice for a very long time, especially since Microsoft wedged it’s way into the OEM market. I can bet that Dell would distribute Mac OS X based systems in a heartbeat. This would gather more developers and with more software being developed, would gather more users.
Of course it’d more or less kill their hardware sales, but from what I understand right now they make more money on their iPods than they do on selling their Computers.
Just some thoughts. A very happy birthday to them! Though I always prefered the Atari and Amiga computers…

It’s close, but Macintosh sales still outshine iPod sales; $6.275b in net Macintosh sales, $4.540b in net iPod sales in FY2005. This doesn’t tell the entire story, of course, but even grouping the other categories as appropriate, Macintosh is still in the #1 spot.
