The much-talked about PhysX processor by Ageia is now finally obtainable for consumers– sort of. Dell has launched the XPS 600 Renegade: a limited edition computer with four GeForce 7900 cards connected via SLI, Intel Pentium D 965 Extreme Edition (overclocked to 4.26 Ghz), and 2GB of GDDR3 memory, and of course the PhysX processor. That’s a $10000 [EUR 8280] gamer’s wet dream. Alienware couldn’t watch silently by the sideline of course, and it also equipped some of its digital solitare machines with the PhysX processor.
Yay, now i can sell my Dodge Neon to play games at ten times the framerate the human eye can see.
I really only see rendering businesses buying these machines.
The hell if I’m going to spend $10000 on a PC just to play games… that’s just crazy… people that spend that much money on a gaming system should be shot IMO…
Yes, I can definitely see a use for this for a rendering machine for professional use, but to spend that much dough on a stupid gaming system… that’s just insane…
But then again, I’m not much of a gamer myself so what do I know…
… can somebody elaborate on that PhysX processor? First time I hear about this thing and the article was kind of short on details on it…

I trust you don’t read OSNews that often:
http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=13999
I read it two or three times a day. PhysX rings a bell, but I definitely skimmed that article. Thanks for the link.
does *anything* support the PhysX? Any game that’s patched to use it or something like that? It seems more a publicity stunt than a real, useful thing (at least for now).
A couple of games do.
Or wait for U3-based games.

I hope this kind of tech caches on – even if it is just integrated into other chips, or even into the cpu itself (AMD). Havok’s shoving it into sli video cards feels like a hack. 😛
yet another card, another source of heat, another thing to add to power consumption, and another thing to buy if you want to be a “real gamer”, or an “enthusiast”.
I’m so excited…

Perhaps there’s more to it than Alienware not wanting to fall behind Dell. Maybe both of them offering PhysX is a sign of some cooperation in advance of Dell’s planned acquisition of Alienware:

I do wonder what the point of the Renegade is if Dell is buying Alienware. Presumably they’d use their new Alienware arm to push high end machines.. Why compete against them with the Renegade now that they (shortly will) own them?
I do wonder what the point of the Renegade is if Dell is buying Alienware.
I think the keyword here is if.
That said the buyout negotiations and renegade will have been done by different divisions. If there is an overlap they’ll only remove it after a buyout if at all.
This thing makes the Playstation3 look cheap by comparison
I might pay $10,000 for a gaming system, but it’s gonna have to be some tripped out VR-type thing, that includes the woman in the red dress from The Matrix
I’d like to know where the physics card comes from. I’ve heard press about it for over a year now, with rumors that Asus might be helping with the cards… googling doesn’t seem to find a card for sale yet. The cost wasn’t that bad.. they were supposed to be about the price points [multiple cards] of “good” video cards.
It’s official:

Too bad Alienware WAS cool… even if expensive. Now they are just expensive and labeled dumb :/
Hopefully there is still Northwest Falcon…
Are you kidding? Physx has a huge number of supporters. Go check out the happenings atthe GDC at firingsquad.com for the info. UE 3.0 is the biggest name that comes to mind. A bunch of others as well but I cant remember them at the moment. Ageia has impressed me considering how small they are and how many naysayers there are.
I wonder how much game engines must be hacked to support PhysX chips. It sure it not an easy migration due to an external chip unlike physics calculations done within CPU as per today.
!!!!
This is Mad… anyone can buy or like whatever they want, of course, but this is the kind of PC that only “Ping FRAGGOTS” and “PC FRAGGOTS” would buy. Real Players, real Fraggers and real men use skills in gaming, rather than “overhardwaring” other players. And they also make, assamble their PCs themselves…
This makes gaming so unfair nowdays… True and fair gaming can only be achived by a closed network with the same harware and software settings, and hacks for everybody… Then the FRAGGOTS are really doomed by the real Players…
Life is a beach, and then you are fragged…

You are truly both bitter and a poor player of whatever game ails you when you chalk up your own shortcomings to the victor possessing superior computer hardware. Newer hardware does not, contrary to your belief, contain inherently balance-breaking features with respect to actual gameplay.
!!!!!
Funny… My post was just a surrealistic joke, with a depth of truth, ovbiously.!!!!
But some people seem to be very touchy, and think it was an allusion to them, probably…
Well, sonnyBoy, if you take that as something personal is probably because you know that you are not a Real Fragger, but a “Ping FRAGGOT” and “PC FRAGGOT”, and it hurts you… LOL
–“You are truly both bitter and a poor player of whatever game ails you when you chalk up your own shortcomings to the victor possessing superior computer hardware”
SonnyBoy, I was at the university playing DOOM (the original), when it was released (1992).
I play sometimes just for fun, and play QuakeIII with a Pentium II 400 Mhrz-ATI AGP. And you know what: I’m likely to be one of the best players, in any server. If you can do the same: Respect, if not, just shut-up, and think before talking…
–“Newer hardware does not, contrary to your belief, contain inherently balance-breaking features with respect to actual gameplay.”
WTF are you talkin about, sonnyBoy???
What is the aim of this article then?? Waht is the aim of Dell, or Alienware,??? Why people want better graphic cards, quicker CPUS and GPUs, and more and quicker memory?? why wanting more FPS ???
Guy, You have no idea of what you are talking about…
You take two players with the same skills. The one who wins is the one with better hardware and better ping!
This is not my opinion. It is a fact!
BY the way:
Did I ever Gaunlet You in a game??? … Probably, LOL
Sorry , I will try not to hurt you too much if I ever find you in a server… But do not worry, It’s about 8 months that I do not play, I have more important things to do, I have tendinitis in my arm because of the PC(not for gaming), and the PC in which I have QuakeIII installed has my gaming internet connection broken after I installed VMware (don’t know why ???) So ur lucky !!!

Games are just games, Life is a game, a strong one, but games are not life. Think about it!

Angel–Fr@gzill@,
You just totally contradicted yourself —
“Real Players, real Fraggers and real men use skills in gaming, rather than “overhardwaring” other players. And they also make, assamble their PCs themselves… ”
So which is it? Hardware or skills? Do the really hard core uber 3l337 players design, program, and build their own FPGAs to run their computers, too?
Real players aren’t mentally retarded and can resist slapping eachother with their epenis. Oh, and they don’t surround their posts with exclamation marks.
!!!!!

–“So which is it? Hardware or skills? ”
No contradiction, Its Skills, but since better hardware gives you more advantage, (unfair, but real…), is more authentic to hack your PC than spending some thounsend of Euros or Dollars in a “Galactic gaming PC”
–“Do the really hard core uber 3l337 players design, program, and build their own FPGAs to run their computers, too?”
WTF are you talkin about???
and yes, some people have build their own PCs, and even their own games to play!!! What do you think Mods are but that, or Cube, or Nexuiz…
–“Real players aren’t mentally retarded and can resist slapping eachother with their epenis.”
Probably, but I play with my hands. I use my penis for other things . And you, you can use your “epenis” for what you want aswell. But I advice you to stop wanking from time to time … and to grow up !
–“Oh, and they don’t surround their posts with exclamation marks.”
Some of them do!!!

So your both posts are saying it is hardware that determines if the person wins the game? If so, I think IMHO that is not quite right. I would like teh Alienware setup simply because it is nice looking and has a crapload of hardware that next gen games are gonig to demand if you want to game at ultra hd resolutions…not so I can go online in a frag fest and own everybody. I am a decent payer at AA and Bfield and many times ni fact have been kicked because people think I am ghosting or hacking when i havent. I have a 3 yr old laptop with a beat up mouse that I use to game…the hardware does not matter….much is all I am trying to say.
!!!
–“So your both posts are saying it is hardware that determines if the person wins the game? If so, I think IMHO that is not quite right”
No, my 3 posts are NOT saying it is hardware that determines if the person wins the game. READ again my 3 posts…!!!
Ping and hardware determine the winner between 2 players with equal skills, though !!!
–“I would like teh Alienware setup simply because it is nice looking and has a crapload of hardware that next gen games are gonig to demand if you want to game at ultra hd resolutions…”
If you like it, it’s OK for you then… You are free to feel so, though I personally think the design is a lack of class and taste… About the hardware for future games, I can agree with you in that.
–“.the hardware does not matter….much is all I am trying to say.”
If “hardware does not matter….much”, then buy a second hand box, a Pentium I MMx, or a Pentium II and play with it… or a first generation Pentium III if it is the minimum requierement for your game… Why would you need to use a super gaming PC, like an Alienware PC ????
Don’t forget to let us know the results of your gamning experiences with that hardware!!! Tell us about your feats, and how you own so much with that hardware …

I bet this machine can run Windows Vista with ease.
