“In Microsoft’s first salvo, the company revealed details about the next version of its digital media technology, code-named Corona, including that it officially will be known as Windows Media 9 Series. […] Microsoft is expected to make other digital media and consumer announcements this week designed to steal thunder from Macworld, which starts Wednesday in New York. Last week, Microsoft said that later this year it will release a new line of 802.11b wireless networking products.” Read the story at News.com.
Great. What new information will it send back to Microsoft about your viewing and listening habits? I hope they wrote the hooks in for network vulnerabilities already. It would hasten things up a bit.
I share your sentiments. The first thing I do when I get a new computer is install Winamp and have it handle all my audio needs. Of course I do it because I find Winamp to be a better product than WMP (I have the phone-home turned off on WMP 8 as it is).
I do the same thing for audio (use Winamp), but what about video? What else can you use to view divx, mpeg, and mpeg4 files that is as fast as WM 6.4? I use 6.4 on my Win2k box, which does all I need it to do, and have not had a need (yet) for the bloated version 7/8. Also, I don’t think this older version has any ‘phoning home’ capabilities, but who knows?
Oh, and Real One blows whale cock

Enjoy.

Corona aka WM 9 is Microsoft’s entry into HDTV broadcasting. It has a higher compression ratio than MPEG 4, plus four times the bandwidth that current methods of transmitting HDTV offer. The Corona codec will allow HDTV movies to fit current DVD disc media. This is going to be a BIG product for HDTV broadcasters and future HD-DVD videos. Pioneer Electronics will be the first to offer a Corona codec embeded in a streaming HDTV reciever in Japan.
When this codec comes to Windows XP we will be able to make our own HDTV videos.
I failed to find any *NEW* technologies revealed. Mostly a rehash of DRM and home entertainment centers via the MS yada, yada, yada.

Well, I don’t know. Corona is much more significant than MPEG4.

…and, last but not least, is a proprietary codec…
Just another MS attempt to f**k other platforms. Where’s the news?
Jack:
And other codecs aren’t? You need to get off your MS hate wagon and come to the real world.
The fact is MS has released codecs to be used (and are used) in QT and Real, however niether Apple nor Real have released their codecs.
And yes, mpeg-4 is too proprietary.
I know that with the exemption of Ogg Vorbis, there are few Open file formats for Digital Media.. but are there any Opensource player projects for Win32?
And other codecs aren’t?
Yes, but most can be implemented by anyone (except Sorenson, maybe).
Do you think you will ever see Corona on Linux?
All it takes is for someone to implement the codec. Of course, no, you won’t see the server or the media player, but the codec is no problem.
