Virtual Iron Software continued on its quest to push Linux and virtualization further into the heart of enterprise data centers today with an announcement that Novell SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 would support its virtualization and data center management platform. Novell will now ship a preconfigured kernel with SLES9 and has guaranteed that all existing independent software vendor certifications will not be affected.
.. should be great for Novell’s virtual shirt!
Still – nice to see Emperor Novell really is getting a few new clothes. I was worried Suse’s dresses weren’t going to fit too well, but so far so good.
“Windows shops interested in virtualization also may multiply faster now that Microsoft has said customers running premium versions of Windows will no longer have to pay per physical server.”
I think it should be “slower” not “faster” given that you now have to pay for each instance of a running OS. The more OS’s you run, the more it costs. That’s pretty clever, because you will have to buy extra licenses just to be sure, and you can’t just physically count servers or chips anymore.
Actually, with the new licensing implemented with Windows Server 2003 R2, you are allowed to run Windows on up to 4 virtual machines without having to pay for additional OS licenses. On a Windows Server 2003 R2(Enterprise Edition) box running 4 virtual servers, you essentially get 5 running copies of Windows for the price of 1 license. And it doesn’t matter what virtualization software you use, MS Virtual Server, VMware, etc.
Oh, ok. Maybe you should have written the article. Makes more sense when you said it
And it doesn’t matter what virtualization software you use, MS Virtual Server, VMware, etc.
Are you sure? I was under impression that you had to use the MS virtualization software, to use the flexible licensing.
I would be very interested if you have any source describing this.
Check out the last QA on this page. Apparently, the new usage rights apply when using non-MS virtualization, but Microsoft will only provide support if you are using MS Virtual Server 2005.
