To help support the specific needs of developers offering subscriptions, starting on January 1, 2022, we’re decreasing the service fee for all subscriptions on Google Play from 30% to 15%, starting from day one.
Regulatory pressure works. This is only a small step, but at least it’s progress.
Thank you Epic.
Geck,
Yeah, their stunts got the ball rolling after decades of anti-competitive abuse by tech giants. Of course, other developers tried but few had the reach & influence of Epic. The war isn’t over, but consumers and 3rd party developers are finally winning some of the battles.
Between this and right to repair, I hope we’re able to make more progress in the future.
I have subscription fatigue, so i tend to avoid anything that i have to pay monthly. The only things i pay for on a monthly subscription basis is rent, broadband and electricity. For everything else there is alternatives for me.
I also include a VPN and a Google 2TB storage subscription.
The VPN saves me from having to subscribe to half a dozen video streaming services,.
The 2TB storage subscription is because I live in a crappy rented house with minimal security, so if someone gets in and steals all my stuff all my data will be gone unless backed up somewhere remote.
I am a mess. We subscribe to get one must see show and then forget about it until the credit card expires and ooops …. I need to do a purge. Other than Netflix. It’s worth it. If a VPN can get you that for free let me know, but happy to pay. And Amazon is covered by Prime, which I need because of the collapse of retail selection on the street.
