“FreeNAS is a free NAS server, supporting: CIFS (samba), FTP, NFS protocols, Software RAID (0,1,5) with a Full WEB configuration interface. FreeNAS takes less than 16MB once installed on Ccompact flash, hard drive or USB key. The minimal FreeBSD distribution, Web interface, PHP scripts and documentation are based on M0n0wall.”
Now I just need a tiny harddrive case with a USB port and an ethernet port and I can get rid of that LAcie device that runs linux, yet doesnt’ support Samba!!
I was just talking to a friend about creating a small OS that just serves as file and print in windows. This is better then anything we could have hoped for.
I was looking at this when it was first released and it needed more work. I guess I’ll have to check it out again.
If you want a NAS operating system based off of Linux (CentOS I believe) and in active development, check out OpenFiler:
http://www.openfiler.com/
I test it a month ago too, and it need some work. but like you i have to see what it have now to evaluate it again.
I’ve been looking for something like this for ages! You can not believe how happy I am right now!
