“Microsoft has delayed the third service pack for Windows 2000- Service Pack 3 —for an indefinite period of time, according to internal documents I viewed over the weekend. Win2K was originally due July 17, but Microsoft recently discovered several major bugs in its Microsoft Installer (MSI) 2.0 code, which was to have been bundled with the update. So now the company will remove MS 2.0 from SP3 and include the older version, MSI 1.1, instead, unless feedback from its beta testers and partners indicates that MSI 2.0 must be included. This indecision, obviously, will adversely affect the release schedule for SP3.” Read the report at WinInformant. Update: MSI 2.0 to be Included in Windows 2000 SP3.
will be cancelled because Win2k has to die to make money on WinXP sales.. so they can make way for their new TruckRamming policy!
…have “major” bugs kept M$ from shipping anything…
since the anti-trust suit
MSI 2.0 has been a constant pain in my ass!! I have not been able to install certain apps due to MSI bugs and when I run the fixes from MS it only makes the problems worse. Because of the self-healing crap of some MS products I’m not able to open MS outlook 2000 or MS Project 2000 when MSI is acting up. It was quicker for me to reinstall the OS than to walk through the endless maze of install this, delete that horseshit. I have had to do this twice in the last nine months.
The goal of MSI may be good, but their implementation sucks. Why should my mail reader or project management tool be affected by the installer service? Their relentless desire to add more “innovation” with each release is adding too much complexity to a very fragile foundation. They really need to redefine the problems that they are trying solve with this crap and come up with a solution that doesn’t cause more problems then it fixes.
and world+dog is going to trust the future of computing to this shower o’ sh**..eep!
Thinks me I’ll dig out my old abacus!
eheh. Some of these comments are hilarious. Keep ’em coming!
My opinion:
I just fear M$ will release more spyware into this service pack. I’m just not interested…
BTW, Mozilla 1.0 on Win2k with Orbit 3+ theme = yum.
..it seems they are actually doing the responsible thing !!!
sigh… this makes no sense what so ever. MS would never do this for that reason. There must be at least 2 other good reasons for delaying the service pack.
Anyways, I was really looking forward to sp3 =(
Brunis is right – MSFT was going to release a service pack 7 for NT 4.0, but never did.

“customer feedback” = Marketing dept. needs more Win2k sales.
I hope Linux keeps gets better. Windows 2000 is the end of the line for me and MSFT.

Yeh, I could never understand how NT customers would be against another Service Pack. PR talk once again.
I’ve got more hotfixes sitting in my Add/Remove programs list than I do programs!
sucks. Anyone who creates installers should keep away from it.
I particularly like the scenarios where an MSI package tries to fix itself and the installer-creator has chosen to reboot after install. All very good, as long as the original MSI files are not corrupted. Norton AV 2k pulled this stunt. Result – your PC reboots, tries to fix itself, reboots, etc.
What a pile.
makes u wonder why they moved to msi in the first place…
it makes good business sense..
like the time they shopped for a gaming API.. all the good cross platform stuff was never even considered.. then they found this p.o.s windows only crap and said HEY!! this one fulfills all our needs.. let’s buy it!
if it pays a truckload of money.. who cares if a few billion people get screwed..
that mentioning a truckload of money and aquiring directx in the same sentence does not make much sense.. delete at will eugenia..
and why is nobody mentioning it? surely this must have the same impact on ServicePack1 for XP?
I think the timing of this news is questionable since the day before MS decides that they will be stopping sales of Win2k to OEMs. MSI might not be the only think they’re slowing the release of this patch for. However, if they are going to do more security audits in the mean time and find more bugs and patch them, then I will applaud MS for its efforts.
I’d agree with Tim in his earlier post. MSI is a total pain. If you disable the MSI service, some apps won’t even install.
if you delete .dll components stuff will stop working.. hopefully only ie..
