Glass is a simulated operating system user interface (UI) project and it is being made with Unity 2018.4. It is not a real OS, although everything in the package is functional and can be changed easily.
Not really an operating system, of course, but still a fascinating project. It also highlights just how versatile modern game engines really are – this is the same engine some of my favourite modern cRPGs and Cities: Skylines are running on.
Something about it is a bit too Android/Windows 10-ish for me to feel comfortable with the design but, given that I use KDE 5 as my daily driver, which commenters actually compare it to, I’m not sure what.
Maybe I got a bad first impression from the “Your new Android device”-esque setup wizard. Maybe it’s that the design is a little too sparse and flat compared to my choice in KDE theming… I don’t know.
This does look like a really clean KDE theme. It’s like if KDE decided to copy the feel of Gnome 3, which would be great to be honest.
Am I missing something here? It’s just a demo of a non-existent UI that contains a lot of familiar animations. I didn’t see anything original for that matter. I’m not sure why I’m supposed to think that’s cool or impressive in any way.
You are supposed to be impressed for the same reason that somebody should be impressed when you run snake on a christmas tree with your voice activated tv remote….not because playing snake is original or impressive but because of the weird tools that are used
It’s even less impressive in that case considering it was made with Unity.
I agree and disagree with you. Yes it should be easy to do a desktop with a game engine, they are designed to do much more demanding things. But also, why not? Why aren’t there more Desktops built on game engines?
