Back in October, Wladimir Palant, developer of the popular AdBlock Plus browser extension, published a blog post outlining how extensions from security company Avast/AVG were collecting massive amounts of data from users. In a somewhat-belated response, Google has now removed some of Avast’s extensions from the Chrome Web Store.
I’m so surprised.
Inevitable. How many people really pay for avast or avg? How did people think they were making money?
Avast used to be decent, and it was one of the first AVs to support 64 bit Windows 2000. There was a year or two I even paid for their full internet suite… until they kept giving me popups to also install their grime fighter (I think that is what that crap was called.) I ended my subscription after that. Sadly one of the highest rated one is Kaspersky, which no one wants to use because it is made by Russians. AVs are creepy things anyhow, we should just all switch to Linux, and be done with them. :p
