Next in our series of “people who left Apple and founded a revolutionary company that was ahead of its time and created amazing products but ultimately failed,” let’s check out General Magic and their operating system called Magic Cap.
The article contains a guide on how to set up a Magic Cap emulator inside a Mac OS 7.5.3 emulator. Some assembly definitely required.
It’s like looking at some of those weird evolutionary dead ends from the Cambrian period.
You watch this demo from 1995, after the Psion 3 had already been on the market for 2 years, and you really get the sense of just how many of their own farts the design team were huffing. It’s bizarre this company that produced nothing of any note and never sold more than a couple of terrible products is getting a documentary. I guess the Apple reality distortion field has a powerful corona.
Yup, and by mid ’95, WinCE and Palm would have also been in a similar, prerelease-but-functional state.

Is it just me or is this basically Microsoft Bob on a mobile device? Did Melinda see this when she was designing it?
