Apple Inc. is overhauling how it tests software after a swarm of bugs marred the latest iPhone and iPad operating systems, according to people familiar with the shift.
Software chief Craig Federighi and lieutenants including Stacey Lysik announced the changes at a recent internal “kickoff” meeting with the company’s software developers. The new approach calls for Apple’s development teams to ensure that test versions, known as “daily builds,” of future software updates disable unfinished or buggy features by default. Testers will then have the option to selectively enable those features, via a new internal process and settings menu dubbed Flags, allowing them to isolate the impact of each individual addition on the system.
If the many issues with and complaints about iOS 13 are to be believed, this seems like a much needed intervention.
If thats the case, I believe they should start with Location services Security. Seems Third party apps such as Honeywell’s Honeywell Hone app has issues with access so Geofencing Tech doesnt work as the security “feature” turns this off and nags you to a harrassing level even though you authorize it to “Allways Allow” it’s use. Add to that Accessibility Option’s Smart Color inversion. As a guy with one eye , and thats degenerating, I need this feature to read content easier. This is spotty at best as I see a blank black screen most of the time. These are just a couple of buggy areas that I see(or not) But the vast public usually blames the OEM’s apps instead of the real core cause of their issues albeit they used to work near perfectly.
I understand the issues weren’t great, and I don’t mean to apologize for apple. The changes sound reasonable and necessary. But just remarkable how far we’ve come where the standard for support is so high that the bugs were fixed quite quickly, instead of waiting a year or so for a service pack. The impact to Apple was significantly less than the pain Microsoft had to go through with longhorn.
