Fans of the classic computer game Ultima V (from the c64/Apple][e era) have re-created the game, using modern game tech, thanks to the Dungeon Siege engine. The Ultima re-make, called Lazarus, is free for download, runs on Windows or Mac, but needs the Dungeon Siege engine (commercial software) to run. More details at the Ultima5 Lazarus site. Update: URL fixed.
…would also be a good engine to do stuff like this
If like me you LOVE this kind of thing, check out this site:
Retro Remakes ( http://www.remakes.org/ ) and the 2 best remakes around from the 8bit era : “Kings Quest VGA” ( http://www.agdinteractive.com/ ) and a “Head Over Heels” remake with great graphics that runs on Windows,Linux,OSX and Beos (!) ( http://retrospec.sgn.net/games/hoh/index.html )
..more something for games.slashdot.org than OSNews, right?
EDIT: now that I’ve made the comment I already regret it for being overly nitpicky :-\

Hey, what’s more OS News than reminiscing about the cool games we played on our Commodores and Apples back in the day.
Anybody have a torrent for the mac version? The only link on the site requires a paid subscription. Or am I missing a way around the registration?
You don’t need a paid subscription. You do however have to have a fileplanet account (which is “free”). As far as a way around the registration? Eh, that isn’t technically legal however, see:

http://xu4.sourceforge.net/
Game crashes alot when fighting though. I had to quit. I was doing well until it just annoyed too much.
I guess most would say the xu4 project is different in the fact that xu4 is not a remake, but is more like Exult (making the old game with same graphics etc to work on new platforms) where as the Lazarus project is using the Dungeon Siege engine to recreate Ultima 5. I think there is another project to make Ultima 5 run natively under newer Operating Systems as well, then again there is a project for pretty much all of the Ultimas for that. Except maybe Ultima 9 which most people thought sucked
Looks interesting…
