Samsung is pushing out a big update to the Gear S3 which introduces a host of new features to the smartwatch. It carries the firmware version R760XXU2DSA1 and also bumps the device to Tizen version 4.0.0.2. The update is currently available in the US, with a wider roll out expected in the coming days.
An update like this would normally barely even register on my radar, but the fact of the matter is that Samsung’s smartwatches are one of the very few sets of devices running Tizen – along with Samsung smart TVs.
I really wish Samsung had the confidence to bring Tizen phones to the US. Their “flagship” Z4 isn’t a powerhouse by any means but it would be a viable alternative to those who prefer something other than Android and iOS. Now that Blackberry, Windows Phone/Mobile, and Firefox OS are all dead and gone, there’s no smartphone on the market without Apple’s and Google’s hands all over it.
A Tizen phone with US LTE bands would be a dream come true.
From what I’ve heard, Tizen is kind of a security nightmare, with old vulnerable packages everywhere. https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/07/12/samsungs_tizen_no_longer_worst_ever/
I think they’ve improved it since that report, but without a device in hand it’s difficult to say for sure. Also, from your article:
So apparently Samsung was already aware and working on the bugs, and the guy may have been exaggerating to promote his scan tool.
