Updates & improvements
– Menu, Process manager, CtrlAltDel, Cmd, Faster bootup
The release is available from the download page. And just in case you forgot, MenuetOS is a pre-emptive, real-time and multiprocessor operating system written entirely in assembly.
And yet it still fits in a floppy disk. This is an amazing project that I remember from years ago. Great job!
This project is so hard for me to take in. In one sense, it is amazing what they have managed to do – video streaming and chatting, gaming, etc. On the other hand, it’s all in Assembly Code. I guess I look at it as someone had a VERY large itch and they scratched it big time. Good for them!
loaded to a usb stick and booted it a few times when I get time to play. FAST. Also don’t forget the fork, http://kolibrios.org
I remember circa 1999 when QNX had their single floppy boot demo that you could surf on. (needed specific 3com NIC, a 3c509 iirc … still have trouble remembering my mom’s birthday though. )
Where the fork is a little bit different to the current MenuetOS.
The current MenuetOS is 64bit and the old MenuetOS, from which KolibriOS forked, is 32bit.
I wonder how much slower and bulkier it would be if major parts were implemented in C.
As somebody currently learning Assembly this project looks really interesting, Ill be taking some time to read the source code later. Thanks for posting 🙂
@MarkHughes The sources of MenuetOS are no longer open. And disassembling is not allowed.
Only the old 32bit MenuetOS was OpenSource under the GPL and was 2004 forked and continued as KolibriOS.
Don’t know, why the author of MenuetOS don’t opensourced the newer MenuetOS, too.
Ah, That’s great information, Thanks for letting me know. I will take a look at KolibriOS, though I think I came across it before a few weeks back, The name seems familiar.
As I remember, there was a widening rift between the project initiator/leader (Ville Turjamnaa) and a small group of developers regarding long term directions for the project. KolibriOS was born when the rift became irreconcilable.
I believe it is this event which led Ville to maintain the 64 bit MenuetOS code closesourced.
