The next version of RISC OS Select will not be ready until after the new year, RISCOS Ltd.’s Paul Middleton has said. Speaking to the Bristol usergroup last night, the ROL boss handed out copies of a leaflet distributed at the Guildford show which includes a list of features for Select 4. It is understood that development is on-going, and developers who have previously contributed components to the RISC OS 4 subscription scheme have been contacted to work again on the project.
why isnt all development effort going into RISC os 5? it seems odd an os with such a small user base would devide itself instead of working together for a common goal. or do i just not properly understand the situation?
RISC what?
Like Hurd[1] will not be, too.
Sorry, couldn’t resist.

RISC OS 5 was developed specifically for the Iyonix by Castle and is based on a 32 bit version of RISC OS developed by Pace for set to boxes. RISC OS 4.x is a 32 bit version developed by RISC OS Ltd and is a development of RISC OS 3.7 developed for the RISC PC by Acorn.
RISC OS Ltd maintained backward compatiability with older RISC OS hardware and are developing the 32 bit version runs on the A9home and a variety of older RISC OS computers (RISC PC, A7000, Omega, Mico and RiscStation) and Virtual Acorn.
It is unfortunate that a split occurred during the development of the Iyonix resulting in two distinct versions with significant differences, however the majority of the development effort now appears to be on the RISC OS 4.x version and given enough support from Iyonix users they will get a version.
RISC OS would benefit from a significant amount of investment but still has some nice features and has very modest hardware requirements. The A9home for example has extremely low power requirements, is quiet, very small in size yet can run some excellent software including Artworks, Easiwriter and Firefox!!

thats a world stopper there.
thats a world stopper there.
Yep. You said it. You must really know a lot about it. Carry on.
