AROS has seen a lot of under-the-hood work lately. Firstly, Joe Fenton has been able to run AROS PPC on his iMac using Fedora Core 4. Joe and Markuss Weiss are working hard on them, in order to give us a PPC version of AROS. Secondly, Bernd Roesch has compiled an AmigaOS-68k hosted version of AROS called AfA (AROS for AmigaOS): “AfA OS is a way to use AROS source without changes and compile them on every AmigaOS based operating system. It can run and be build hosted on every AmigaOS compatible system and provides a compatible API to all systems.”
I would like a little more info on AfA.
Is it basically the “hosted” version of AROS running under AmigaOS? What about replacement, of, for example, libraries with their AROS equivalents?
Mostly I’m interested in a 68K version of AROS because it would allow the possibility of booting a 68K compatability layer (E-UAE) for AROS x86, in 100% OSS.
I’m honestly curious: what’s the point of running Aros on actual Amiga’s? Development? Because I thought the point of Aros was to have Amiga running on any kind of hardware. Running AROS to get Amiga compatible on hardware that’s already Amiga compatible seems a bit..redundant.
Does anyone know if the AROS team have plans to produce a fully native PowerPC version of AROS?
It would be awesome to make use of that old G3/266 I have. I bet a light weight OS like AROS would be pretty quick on it too!

As the news blip says, I have FC4 installed on my iMac. It’s an older 450MHz G3 iMac DV+ model. I do plan to work on native support for it, but there are other things in AROS I’m working on first.
Given how well AROS works in FC4 hosted, native PPC will be really incredible.
i opened the page an it’s got some furry porn starlet in the top-left corner of the page. if you don’t know what furries are I suggest you search http://www.somethingawful.com
Dramatica definition here:

Aww…. Jealous cause she is more sexy than you?
While shes a bit on the sexy side, I dont see anything particulary pornographic about her.
Thats “Kitty”, the mascot to the OS, drawn by Eric Schwartz.

His animations and art has been with the Amiga community since nearly the beginning. Actually I love his work.
“Kitty” is probably his sexiest character.

PS no apostrophes in this post because the key doesnt work…
PPS a more neutral definition of “Furry”s:

Oh it’s her people are ranting about..
She’s cute isn’t she… and a bit dangerous at the same time… but pornographic? No.
She rules. She’s a way better mascot than that fat ugly penguin, or that bloated red demon.
I have this hunch that people who don’t know who Eric Schwartz is, probably won’t be interested in AROS 🙂
Oh and she isn’t wearing any clothes, I would say that’s at least slightly “risqué” – if I was uptight enough to care that is. ( http://rigby-jones.net/es/art/art/Zzfied.gif ) Well endowed too, for a kitty.
The purpose of AROS on 68K, to many AROS fans, is to have an open source solution to the possiblity of running older AmigaOS software on the new machines. Right now we have the excellent and open-sourced E-UAE, as an emulator, and we can buy the (closed source) Amiga ROMs from Cloanto.
AROS has the potential to be more than just a hobby OS, it can (and will) be an upgrade for AmigaOS fans and users. Certainly it’s already a license upgrade, as well as being a port to modern hardware so that a hardware upgrade is possible, but in time it will become an effective functional upgrade as well. To do this fully it needs to be able to run older Amiga software as well as new.
So, clearly, you must start with a 68K port of the OS.
All i will say is, Yes the drawing is interesting, but the comments on enyclopedia dramatica is more akin to “jocks” or the “poser”..
Think of it like this, everythign thats new and wierd, is made fun of. However it becomes common place. Dont think so?
Look around you, your sitting infront of a computer. This, my friends, is the result of *gasp* something different and weird.. That $23,000 car you do donuts with in the parking lot? Um. in teh 1800 it was strange and weird, and they actually made laws against it. Those things you see in the sky, ya know airplanes? that also was thought of as weird and new.. But lets get on more Trivial things.. Anime, 20 yrs ago it was made fun of due to the bad dubbing.. but now there are anime that rival alot of live actions. dont beleive me? watch Beserker then talk to me. Everyone’s favorite looney toons? or perhaps even disney? made fun of and disliked. Also, this currnet fad of “ricing” ((putting body kits on cars that serve no purpose, putting huge wingsonthe Back of a frontwheedrive car, neons ect ect)) cars, everyone finds it cool.. but is it? Unfortunatly for all the Ones who decide that “furries” are horrible, or gay or stupid. Look around, everything you put your hands on at one time or another was thought of as stupid..
By the way, Just to clue you in. Not all furries dress up and hump each other, just like not all jocks are raging Queers
I never ever understood why the hell IT projects must have mascots. So that’s it? That’s IT? Outahere…
I’m amazed at how much importance some people give to such issues, and to furries in general… I guess AROS is better off without such individuales, than with
Joe Fenton is a WONDERFUL programmer, having worked on such projects as FusionPC and FusionPPC.
He has intricate knowledge of Macintosh Hardware internals that will serve the AROS project well.
And he has proven he can deliver good commercial-grade code.
I would LOVE to be able to run AROS on some of my Older Macs that are underpowered for Panther or Tiger.
I have a nice G3-400 Mhz Blue and White PowerMac that would LOVE to run AROS or MorphOS or AmigaOS 4.0 if they were ported to that platform.
I’m looking forward to the day when AROS or ReactOS can be used as a “Daily Driver”.
And the screen shots on the AROS website show a nice looking OS, besides a potentially useful one.
Mean while back at the ranch.
I’d love to have an Amiga Os on my mac laptop, personally I’d rather have Amiga OS4 than AROS, as it’s more complete, but there are certain issues with that, alas.
