“Google Base is a place where you can add all types of information that we’ll host and make searchable online. You can describe any item you post with attributes, which will help people find it when they search Google Base. In fact, based on the relevance of your items, they may also be included in the main Google search index and other Google products like Froogle and Google Local.”
I’ve been writing systems like this for a long time, only better. They could’ve provided a lot more types of attributes than they do now. You can’t even define a simple pulldown? Interface isn’t as smooth and clear as we’re used to from Google eitehr. They could make an online “MS Access for morons” if they’d give it a bit more thought (and time, money).
why is this on a site for operating systems (or was in the first place) and now it’s turned into: operating systems with other tech stuff that us moderates enjoy. Like loving google which is weird because all companies are after the same thing.
It’s important though. This might signal further global dominance by Google, and that, in the end, affects Operating Systems at a lot of levels.

Go read our Goal, as stated here [ http://www.osnews.com/contact.php ]. As you can see, and also as we have mentioned only about a 9875398651986598165045 times, OSNews is about more than just operating systems.

Do you hate yourself for wanting more money to get a better life? Sorry sonny, money makes the world go round. Sorry for bursting your bubble .

..are belong to us?
or better, all our base belongs to Google?
(sorry for the pitiful gag, but i couldn’t resist)
Google Base represents Google capitalizing on what is, essentially, the widespread Internet-wide knowledge that being prominently listed on Google.com = money.
Now that Google is known as the place to find information, people will submit structured information to them (like real estate listings, job offers, etc.) in hope that more Google == more Traffic == more Money.
The funny thing is that this just further pushes Google into prominence as being the one-stop shop for all information, so the more people submit structured data to them, the more important they become as a place to find it.
All in all, a clever strategy. They know this vicious cycle will develop.
I’ll be interested to see how they handle this product being released “in the wild.” I.e. when people start bulk-uploading spam, etc.
(Regardless, this is one of the few Google products I really dislike. Keep your structured data in your own database and using your own applications. You’ll be happier. The lowest common denominator isn’t the best solution for everyone, it’s just the minimal solution for almost everyone.)
we will all rely on walmart for our things and google for our information. All other purveyors of goods and media will die a painful death, realizing there is no business for the #2 vendor in a commodity market.
Walmart-approved suppliers and google-indexed media outlets will put the others out of business, and the global economy will crumble under the weight of the economic advantage of corporations over consumers:
Prices simply will be driven too low to employ the vast semiskilled labor pool, which in turn won’t be able to buy the goods and media, and the cycle will continue until natural resources become the only remaining commodity that can sustain any market capitalization. Then, national governments will close their borders to the export of natural resources, sanctions on the trade of finished goods follow, and the whole global economy shuts down.
In the end, it’s not google’s fault, it’s not walmart’s fault. It’s the very concept of the corporation that boomed and doomed the people of Earth… an embodiment of all of the seven deadly sins rolled into a legal entity.
Oh no, looks like somebody forgot to incorporate the word “exploitation” into his post! Give me a break.
Google: All your base are belong to us!
yes yes I know… very sad…
not funny, the pun intended is a joke on you.
