“Microsoft is right on schedule with this month’s Windows Vista CTP. We had to really pull some strings to get this release slightly ahead of schedule, but we managed it and it’s our pleasure to bring you our initial analysis of the new build, titled 5231. It’s becoming clear that Microsoft is serious about Vista, as it keeps getting better with every CTP release.”
Does anyone know how you could get a legal copy of Vista for testing purposes? Like a developer thing or something?

Get an MSDN subscription or try to enroll in MS’s beta program.
Or wait for Beta 2 (expected in December IIRC) when Vista will be made more widely available.
I think, Microsoft has been under the gun to have a marked improvement of the next OS release. that said:
I think as far as the windows world goes. .NET 2.0 , Vista and Office 12 are really going to improve things, will they be prefect no. but MS has shown recently that each release does improve, and I expect
this to be no different. I think by Vista SP1 is when you will really see the effects of Vista and .NET

Most people think that you are wrong. Time will tell.
“Most people think that you are wrong. Time will tell.”
MOST people have never heard of Vista, Linux, OSNews, /., and could less give a damn.
I’m a longtime Mac user and an Apple booster since the days when the Apple ][+ was new. I am increasingly unhappy with the direction Apple is taking and am seriously interested in Vista. I’ll probably buy a PC with Windows Vista MCE when they become available next year. The Linux naysayers are out in force, but I can’t help but note the site linked in this article has been slashdotted. People are more interested than you think.
Doesn’t it cost a whole lot of money to enroll in MSDN? I tried once, I think I have some sort of account with them, but I couldn’t find any links to a beta program or something. I’ll try looking again today. Would you happen to have a link that could help me out?

You’ll most likely need to be subscribed to their ‘everything but the kitchen sink’ MSDN subsciption, which costs a few bob; the public access beta is a bit of a hit and miss in regards to whether one is chosen.
The best bet is to ring up your local Microsoft ofice, or even come in and vist them to inquire about getting a copy of their beta – 9/10, they’ll have a spare cd of it hanging around the office that they give out to big clients who may wish to chat to Microsoft directly.
Contra to myth; Microsoft isn’t the el-supremo of anal rention.
You only need to subscribe to the Operating Systems level to get Vista via MSDN.

TechNet Plus is also an option:

Besides that or the suggestion of requesting a copy through your regional MS office (likely a good bet), Beta 2 should be available via public CTP around December as mentioned previously.
Any human can request Ubuntu to be sent to them for free, without cost, without shipping fees.
Ubuntu is truly a Linux distribution for humanity
With Ubuntu Linux I don’t have to pay or lick someone’s dirty anus to get into a beta testing scheme, nor do I have to pay for the final versions when they are released.
No man is an island – every purchase YOU make supports someone else’s philosophy.
Don’t support a convicted monopoly
“It’s becoming clear that Microsoft”
wants your money again
Me, I’d rather slap my butt cheeks with several crisp $20’s and keep the money
of course apple doesn’t want your money. ms is the only company that doesn’t gives away its stuff for free. i guess i go and get my free mercedes now.
You guys sound like rambling crazy profits.
Quit the trolling plz
lol
Well, I’d like to try out Vista, but I’m not about to pay ~500$ just to get a membership to a site that can get me Vista (MS’s site that is). I doubt I’m gonna buy Vista, so It’s a now or never kinda thing lol. I’m also not about to call MS’s office (fear of telephones lol).
If anyone can help yo get me on some Beta testing list, I would appreciate it. If not, thanks anyways.

Yah, and while you’re at it, why don’t you try to get on the “free demo car” program from Audi, Jaguar, Maserati, and BMW.
What planet are you from? How many companies give away stuff for free?
Begone!
lol, well This website seems to be giving a Nano away…… YOU BEGONE! lol
There are some nice people in this world, I’m asking for one of them to help me out. I don;t plan on using Vista in the long run, but to be able to try it would be nice so that I could actually have a REAL oppinion for using it. Everyone that says “Vista sucks” without having at least tried it is just foolish. You can say it after, but first you gotta try it.
Free cars, eh? Not bad of an idea…..
I’ll look into it
Actually, come to think of it, you can. It’s called: TEST DRIVE. You won;t be using the car for the long run, but you can use it for maybe 30 min?
Likewise with Vista

Copies of Vista build 5231 have been widely available through dem torrent sites…Not that I would ever risk irking Billy by actually visiting one…:p
People are payed to test software, why should we pay someone to find all the bugs for them?
Thats true, We should be PAYED to test Vista. Chances are they’d be saving a LOT more money giving Vista away to a “community” than from having to hire “professional debugers” (100K$+?). Instead they charge 600$ for someone, who may or may not submit real bugs, to test Vista.
Considering that MS seems Money centered, I’d expect them to know that……
It’s kinda early where I am right now, so tell me if this makes sense lol
–ZaNkY
Me, I’d rather be paid than payed, because one is a word and the other is not.
Grammar troll ahoy!
lol again as i said, I’m not an early person thanks for the correction though. Too bad there is no edit function

I hear ya! I wasn’t trying to be mean or anything, just forgot my smilies. I’m not a “being awake in the middle of the day” person.
