Hewlett-Packard on Friday recalled 135 000 battery packs sold with its notebook computers shipped globally from March 2004 to May 2005. The product is being recalled following 16 reports of batteries overheating due to an internal short circuit, the company said.
Well obviously this is not good, but congradulations to HP for having the guts to do this!
As if HP has much choice. An internally short-circuited battery has the potential to cause fire, explode or otherwise physically hurt people. As soon as a manufacturer finds out about such defects, it may face massive lawsuits, unless it takes immediate action to resolve the issue. No serious manufacturer would be stupid enough to ignore a problem like this one.
Unfortunately, HP’s reporting page at: http://bpr.hpordercenter.com/bpr/
keeps crashing with every browser and every machine I try. And my notebook’s battery pack is one of those being recalled.
