Donn Cave has updated his port of Python to BeOS, as well as the Bethon BeOS API interface library. This brings BeOS up to date with other platforms with regards to Python, and merges some independent patchsets into Bethon. Both are for R5.03, meaning that pretty much any BeOS system out there can use them.
As cool as this is and as much as I like python, is there a market? How many BeOS user are there still out there, I mean if Haiku would get to a more useful point, so that people can start using it, I could imagine this being useful. But with a small and shrinking community (don’t deceive yourselves about that, only the fact that BeOS will not run on most new hardware is a slow death sentence) there is no immediate need.
Probably more needed than this post of yours. Donn Cave, I’m afraid you’ll have to discontinue your work on Python for BeOS, as Mr. Anonymous feels there is no need for it.
It’s needed alright.
I don’t use it for programming, but there are a few BeOS apps that need Python.
The one I use is the BitTorrent client for BeOS (Doesn’t run without Python)

I believe Bethon makes Python the third language after C and C++ that has API bindings, correct?
IMHO it’s direly needed, and Haiku can offer a lot of improvement here. Being forced to program in C is no fun for a fun platform
nobody ever developed BeOS applications in C…
i haven’t used BeOS for some time …by the way, I never *really* did. but i have a policy to make my programs run on linux, windows, mac and beOS. mac and windows being optional
I was using python .2, until now
Not avaible for PowerPC…
nobody ever developed BeOS applications in C…
Well, not GUI apps, but for smaller utilities C is ok – almost all of the StorageKit class functionality has C counterparts. And there is drivers, of course…
It is great news…
hope sometimes in future apps like DogTail get developed for BeOS also…

That’s really nice to hear. I was a BeOS user back in the day, and Zeta along with Haiku nearly lured me back. As much as I don’t think that’s going to happen for a very long while, it’s still nice to watch things improve there one step at a time.
I used to use BeOS, too. I’m considering switching back to BeOS, again. There’s one little problem: it doesn’t detect PCI & CDROM on my laptop

Up until recently I used BeOS regularly. And my language of choice was python to do my development and web stuff…
What stopped me from using BeOS was that I needed better wireless support and tunneling (pptp) capabilities for work. Oh well. Maybe when Haiku comes out!!!! Very exciting!
I would switch back to BeOS from Mac OS X for those things!
I think its the time, for alternative OS enthusiast, to restart trying, discovering and using this BeAutiful OS.
A lot is happening behind the scenes… Maybe BeOS/Haiku/Zeta has much more software and usable features than what you ever imagined.
