While high technology has had a major effect on the U.S. military arsenal, strategists warn that high tech weapons may not be enough to achieve importatnt aims in the U.S. war on terrorism. Capturing Osama bin Laden, for example, will likely be achieved only through local help and the old fasioned art of making friends with locals in the know. An Associated Press story outlines some of the major high tech tools to be used by the U.S. military in its search for bin Laden, and their recent track record.
terrorism will only end when organised religion of all kinds crumble and the races mix. there will be no excuse then.
Most of the quotes in the article about past failures were regarding actions taken during the Clinton years. Take that fwiw.
As far as the Gulf war went, George Bush let that fish get away.
IMHO, US intelligence agencies have the toys, it’s just a matter of getting the go-ahead to use them. I’m betting that now, they’ve got the go-ahead. Watch the results come pouring in.
Nothing stopped J. Edgar Hoover from using all the toys; using the intelligence gathered to effect an agenda. Covert operations cannot be detected and therefore are not subject to law enforcement, indeed, law enforcement works most effectively when there is no privacy, and therefore no secrecy. Fairly simple OPSEC procedures could have been put in place to prevent these types of disasters, after all, there’s nothing new under the sun when it comes to hi-jackings. The RAND corporation and other think tanks have been paid billions of taxpayer dollars to study these scenarios and to craft countermeasures for disaster prevention.
Any foreign visitor that’s learning to fly an aircraft for commercial purposes may in fact be suspected of trying to transport illegal drugs, so the current laws for collecting and using intelligence still apply without the need for expansion to so-called “terrorists”. And of course, if Middle Eastern terrorism was so well known to be a problem, then, why were these smaller countries not invaded and controlled by the U.S. long ago?
Rule #1, never commit a crime unless you have a patsy to pin it on, Rat-Brain.

That’s an interesting thought, but it would never work. People would then replace something worthwhile with something worthless and then gather in groups and instigate terrorism over that. There is no such thing as non-organised religion, the same way there is no such thing as a capitalist socialist country…
Back on topic…
The press never has the full story, I don’t either, but I’ve never seen a global operation of such magnitude bear tangible results in so little time. The US is using alot of their intelligence tricks, I’m sure…
