The WinFS rumors were true: Microsoft has posted for download by its Microsoft Developer Network subscribers a first beta of its next-generation WinFS file system. While many developers were not expecting Microsoft to release a Beta 1 build of the technology until late 2006, Microsoft officials said on Monday that getting early bits to testers before Windows Vista shipped was actually the plan of record since last year. Update: Channel9 has a video of WinFS (WMV).
Only the 1 bits? What about the 0 bits?
It compresses better if you toss out the 0 bits.
And the circus music begins to play in a poor attempt to drown out news about Linux. When has a M$ product NOT been in beta, regardless of ‘BETA’ being in the title? And the sheep eat the M$ news up as mice would a half digested bit of popcorn within a steaming pile of dog feces.
I’m downloading now. Can’t wait to see what all the fuss is about.

Posted this in the other thread (which appears to have died), it’s most definitely worth posting again. There is an hour long demo video over on Channel 9 which is very impressive:

By no means can this technology be compared to beagle/spotlight/google desktop/whatever anymore. Also, after watching the video, it’s pretty apparent why something this ambitious is taking so long…namely, backwards compatibility which is something MS has always done a bang up job at. Even if you berade MS for their business tactics or whatever, WinFS will be an extraordinary accomplishment for them, and a huge boon for developers to boot as working with a flat file system is such a huge PITA.
Agreed. I was actually impressed after watching that video. Definitely not what I expected.
That “life” demo was pretty sweet.
That is a ridiculously big file for a 58 second video – 231Mb!
It’s 58 minutes.
oh. Oops!

it wasn’t a rumor. this same story was posted yesterday and i confirmed that winfs was available for download on msdn then. see the link.
instead of posting the same story twice, maybe you could post the overdue news that ms released service pack 1 for small business server 2003 many months ago.
The video was quite informative, and you can see someone’s screenshot here – http://img383.imageshack.us/img383/6647/local1310030645winfsshellna…
I look forward to getting my hands on it and seeing how well it works. The concept of having all relationships and “stacks” down at the DB end for all applications to make use of is a good one.
Is the Beta for XP? Will it run of Windows 2000?
They have backported to XP, but not 2000.
