This is a detailed guide for Linux beginners about how to setup a web, mail and FTP server with Mandriva 10.2. It covers every aspect of the installation and demonstrates the setup process with the help of 39 screenshots. Experienced administrators will benefit from this tutorial as well.
Okay, I am not a big fan of RPM. But A) URPMI is very good at managing packaging dependencies, and B) Why not just install Ubuntu or Debian if you want to use Apt to install all of your software?
Also, the guy never sets up a firewall. Somehow, I think that “The Perfect Setup” might be a little better off if it had a firewall on. But whatever.
Have you read that the tutorials are preparing the system for the installation of ISPConfig? ISPConfig installs its own firewall.
Just /boot / and swap? Umm, Wouldn’t you want to partition out /var and/or /home for a web/ftp server?
It looks like the author is some kind of apt fanboi, easily seen on how he compares apt to rpm. He did the same article some time ago for Suse, and did not use the native tools then either. But rather insisted on using Apt. In this case using URMPI would have made much more sense, as all the RPM packages he installs are included in stock mandrake. And when using URMPI you should also use urpmi.update to keep your system up to date, rather important on a sever I’d imagine. I for one would not take advice to set up a server from someone who don’t know the distribution well enough to use the native tools.
urpmi.update does not update your system. It updates your hdlists (the local record of what packages are available from the urpmi media). MandrivaUpdate actually downloads and installs fixed packages.
I think I read pretty same things a couple of days ago jere in this site, but that was for Suse. even that guy didnt change anything from that, just screen shots. I think no need for this article here.
