QNX is powering Neptec’s Laser Camera System (LCS) on the space shuttle. This camera system will be used to inspect the Space Shuttle for damage before returning to earth. There’s a news release at the QNX web site.

it’s interesting to see that both the most unstable OS ever (windows 9x) and the most stable one (QNX) are produced by commercial companies. open-source systems seems to stay in the middle.
stability has improved much with windows 2000, mac os x, and modern open source systems. stablility is no longer a unique selling point. except for such special things like spaceflight.
That’s right ladies and gentlemen. The flight was canceled at the last minute. QNX and NASA are grounded for the time being.
Can’t find a link to QNX’s API documentation to see how it looks like. Can you ?
Look at NetBSD.

Go Neptec!
I know this is supposed to be about QNX but I have friends who work at Neptec!
Why is it that we have to put up with such unstable and badly designed pieces of crap like Windows, Linux and MacOS when there are good alternatives such as QNX available?
In all the above mentioned systems, a buggy 3rd party driver can bring down the whole system. I would gladly pay the small performance penalty of a true microkernel compared to a monolithic kernel.

The answer is very simple.
QNX has released QNX2, QNX4 and QNX6 — 8-10 years apart. That’s why they are so stable.
QNX is a great OS but how anyone can lump it in with both Win9x and Linux is absurd. QNX is a hard real time OS. Comparing it to anything is just silly. Let’s talk about the merits of QNX. A more appropriate comparison would be QNX to VxWorks. Both of which I know for a fact NASA uses. Both of them are known to be very stable, in fact nasa used VxWorks to run the mars rovers.
To compare things with completely different design goals is really silly. Would you compare a pickup truck and a Mack truck just because they both tow things?
