Overall, Xandros Desktop OS Version 3 Business Edition has proven itself to be a fine operating system. As a long time Windows user, who is forced to use XP on a daily basis, I really appreciated Xandros’ approach to Linux-Windows integration and just how easy they made the transition from one operating system to the other.
distro with kde as default desktop environment are all greats
gnome are losing momentum i guess :>
*sigh*
Not really, there’s actually more gnome distributions, especially commercial ones, than ever before. Especially now that Novell is using it for their business desktop. In fact, there’s an article before this one complaining (among other things) about some distributions leaving KDE and more Gnome distributions popping up.

Are there? Where?

I don’t know why this rumour keeps getting handed around. It just shows how desperate people are getting for Gnome distros. The NLD is not exclusively a Gnome distribution. There is a radio button during install for using KDE or Gnome, and even then, in the Gnome install you end up using a lot of KDE/Qt stuff with YaST and kde-su etc. and vice versa with GTK front-ends for iFolder.

Wow, is there really? Where, and who’s leaving?

I keep two computers on my desk – one runs Windows (necessary for some of my business apps) and one runs Gentoo (my daily workstation). Every time my wife sits down at my desk, she chooses the Windows computer to work on.
I bought a new laptop for her the other day and loaded it with Xandros 3 – after the initial “But I don’t LIKE linux!” she’s happily pointing and clicking, accomplishing everything she needs. It’s taken <24 hours from the time I inserted the install CD for her to be comletely comfortable in the new environment.
I love my Gentoo box and I’m not switching. I like Xandros for the package management (much better than any RPM distro) and the Debian base, she likes it for the easy interface – it’s a great OS for her laptop.
Way to force your OS choice on other people.
Is it Distribution or Distrobution??? Or are both spellings accepted. Like color and colour???
BTW Please do not start another flame war on GNOME vs. KDE distros!
No, distrobution is an error I believe.
Color and colour are both not correct. Color is American English, Colour is British (and by extension, Australian, Canadian etc.) English. Colour is an error in the States, just like color is an error up here in Canada.
For instance, typing colour in OOo using the American dictionary results in spell check picking it up.
Oh yes! thanks for the info but I know Color is american is colour is british..I just quoted it as an example to enquire whether distrobution and distribution are also somewhat similar to the colour/color case.
Distrobution does seem like a typo but I have seen it a few times before too and so I thought i would enquire…
It is “distribution” or “distro” for short.

Ofcourse not, its really fluxbox. Hey, lets not forget emacs and vi.
Flame away people. Ok, just having a touch of fun. The top poster is right.
The distro is distributed through various channels.Distrobution doesn’t exist nor does distro.
Yet Another Linux Review
I enjoy using linux, but these reviews are getting very monotonous. I’m beginning to think that because linux was at one time hard to install that every review must debunk that myth for the current status of linux then show us a few features.
I wish these reviews would go into more about what seperates “this” distro from the others. Every distro will recognise your mouse, every distro *can read NTFS and use Wine. The reviewer says “like any linux distro” a couple of times in the article and while I agree with him that Xandros is fine, what makes the Businees Edition good for business? How were the business tools bundled in that would help someone decide if they wanted to use this for work?
Just my .02
I enjoy using linux,
That’s fine.
but these reviews are getting very monotonous.
Unlike you a lot of people yet don’t have a distro they might feel comfortable with. For them these reviews can be helpfull.
The review doesn’t really show anything at all.
If people were using this review to gauge what distro is for them they;d probably have question like “What makes this different from Linspire?” I just wish the review was more in depth about the version of distro itself rather than shwing features that several other distros have. I wouldn’t mind comparing features if the reviewer could explain why this distro is better or worse than others.
In the end my point is all these reviews sound the same and don’t really explain what the reviewer liked or disliked about the distro or even go over why the distro is a better choice over another. I would expect that a ‘Business’ distro would go over features that would be used in a business environment. If a user wants to use this for home maybe they’re looking at this distro because of the ‘Business’ aspects of it and want a revie of that.
I also agree, not everyone has found a linux distro they are happy with.
What I would like to see is a comparison of all distros, reviewed by the same person on the same hardware, and all the good/bad points listed for each distro.
Personally, I do not have the time, or I would have done it.
What I do not like to see, is reviews like this highjacked by windows fanboys moaning that linux is crap.
Most of them appear to be retarded with no valid arguments. In fact, I would say that 95% of them have not even seen linux, never mind used it.
$129,- is a lot of money.I have bought SuSE 9.3 for €70,maybe i would have considered Xandros as well.
yes $ 129.- is a lot compared to Suse Pro, but Suse Pro does not include Crossover Office, nor does it have its own filemanager … i guess that is what you are paying for.
I wouldn’t mind comparing features if the reviewer could explain why this distro is better or worse than others.
Maybe yes itś better to discuss all the common features such as package management, updates, repositories available, performance, security etc.
xandros offers the OCE edition for free!
it isnt as heavily customized/broke as linspire is
everything just works!
Be careful when you update Xandros with the latest service pack or kernel update. I did this and it didn’t go smooth. Others encountered problems that they had to reinstall Xandros.

Wow. They’re really not kidding when they talk about a Windows-like experience for linux…
Because distri just doesn’t sound right.
Because distri just doesn’t sound right.
Is it distro’s or distri?
In all fairness, this review does compare Xandros with other distros though.

In today’s computing environment, the high majority of people encounter Windows as their first operating system (OS). This is due to Windows’ popularity, not only with beginners and people who are not computer professionals, but with the home user in general.
Wow, nobody ragged on this one yet?
have you ever tried to run linspire on a slow computer?
Xandros (all of them) runs very well on slower older hardware, linspire is a lost cause when running it on a pentium 2 or something
anyway.. i don’t use either distro, but i have used both for short periods of time, Xandros is deffinitly a top tier distro, works well, well organized, and fast.
i’m a gentoo man myself but that’s a whole different ball game lol
I run linspire on my toshiba laptop, pIII 500mhz, 192mb ram, and the boot is slow and all, but after booting, it does fine on all I use it for (except videos damn windows codecs are slow as hell…), and i’m talking full-blown desktop with kde, firefox, adobe7, openoffice, etc.
I haven’t replaced linspire for suse 9.3 or fedora core 4 because of its (wireless/wired) network manager. I haven’t seen yet in linux-land something that works as well as that (at least for me), and that’s pretty much the reasons why I still keep linspire (oh, and hibernate works out of the box too…).
uh i think you are talking about Kwifi and it is a KDE utility and is available in any KDE install….
and yea, it is cool when it works…which usually means if you have the correct wireless tools for the card you are trying to use….
try xandros OCE and see what ya think… I doubt you will bother with that other distro again…
btw-off topic, did you buy the box linspire set or the download?
I’ve been using Xandros for over 6 months now (the Deluxe version) and it is one slick distribution. It’s main strengths (in my opionion) are:
1) The Windows-like environment makes transitioning easier.
2) The networking functionality for integrating into a Windows (NT Domain or AD) network is incredible. It’s a very simple setup and just works.
3) Printing to a network printer is simple.
4) Crossover Office lets you run your Windows apps (the ones you can’t live without)
5) Xandros Networks is a simple and painless way to install software and updates.
6) The Xandros File Manager makes file management easy.
7) It’s very stable. I have had no issues with crashing or erratic behavior.
Well that’s all I can think of right now. If you need a Linux distribution that plays well in a Windows network, Xandros is the best choice I’ve seen.
Did no one notice that the xandros logo is actually a svastica in disguise? Come on, change it…
Ubuntu… still kicking everyone’s arse… including debian (though ubuntu is debian redhead step child)
debian developers are complaining like XFree86.org did when XORG came out.. Debian is just too slow on fixing things, and the political system is the exact opposite of the idea of open source.
thats why debian is … D I Eing
i know.. incoming flames, but screw you guys, im going home to my windows 3.1 machine!
hehehehehe nice sense of humour there mate, pity it will be lost on them all here.
….. i bet you’re in middle school
it takes a special bread of imaturity and idiocy to come up with such remarks
Ubunty would not exist if not for debian and truthfully…. i think it would fade away to nothing without debian
either way… it’s uninformed, uneducated people like you that think they know it all but really know just enough to make a fool of yourself.
on a side note…… it is highly unlikely that any business not run buy a linux geek would ever run Ubuntu, however… it is highly likely one would run Xandors.
either way… it’s uninformed, uneducated people like you that think they know it all but really know just enough to make a fool of yourself that give these forums and the linux world a bad name.
I have been testing Linux on old hardware like PII 266 Mhz, for 4 years to replace windows; nothing convinced me at all except for Xandros, because I saw things that makes me surprised, and this is on all fronts, it reminds me of apple in the quality arena. People believe me there is nothing comes close to this distro at all, try it and you will see it for yourself.
Even Xandros forum is one of a kind.
Some of the miracles I encountered are:
1. Xvid, Divx support out of the box running great on old machines
2. Powerful Graphics recognition and testing mechanism
3. The amazing kcontrol (Control Panel)
4. The wonderful XandrosNetworks
5. The xandrosfilemanager with its rich features
6. The extremely simple installation
7. The stability under low hardware specs
Some distros show one or more miracles but they fall to show others; Xandros shows alot of miracles
Remember guys that Xandros was once known as Corel Linux, and you all know what i mean by Corel.
