Unfortunately no AMD,they bundle SuSE with their Intel line of servers only.I think that’s a missed opportunity.
It’s nice that a big company adds more linux support to servers.

But sheesh, isn’t there a big company with the guts to start selling linux DESKTOPS and LAPTOPS?
And no, selling 1 pc from your online store that CAN be bundled with linux (but x and y do not work under linux) doesn’t do the trick.
I’m tired of playing the ‘whats-not-supported-in-this-pc’ game, specially on laptops! And no, I do not want to pay more than I would pay for a laptop with damn windows, nor I want to have something shipped from another country, nor do I want to have less than a handful to choose from. I want a laptop I can buy without worries with chipsets and that I can have hardware support in case I have problems without having to ship it out to wherever…

When there is succient demand for new PCs with Linux, vendors will supply them.

Have you heard about http://www.emperorlinux.com/
Emperorlinux is good, but has the following drawbacks that undermine your response:
I’m tired of playing the “whats-not-supported-in-this-pc” game
Not all laptop features are supported by EL, especially with regard to 56k modems…
I do not want to pay more than I would pay for a laptop with damn windows
By the looks of it, EL does add a bit of cost to the standard Windows laptop you can buy direct…
nor do I want to have less than a handful to choose from
Well, they have about a dozen, maybe 15 – that still isn’t a lot considering how many makes of laptops there are, and there’s only 2-4 per manufacturer
nor I want to have something shipped from another country
Emperorlinux is a small-ish american company – so it probably doesn’t ship it’s models to the other 5.5 billion people in the world, or support many languages/localisations
I want a laptop I can buy without worries with chipsets and that I can have hardware support in case I have problems without having to ship it out to wherever…
I’m sure Emperorlinux covers that base pretty well…
apart from that, what I think the rant was referring to was a large company like IBM, HP etc shipping their laptops with Windows, or Linux, across the whole range, fully supported – a dream I can’t wait for!
Oh, but if you do know a company like Emperorlinux that operates within Europe (specifically the UK) then do let me know – I have to do something in the meantime!
Yeah, you got my comment pretty well, that was just what I was thinking.
Basically, I live in Europe, that narrows down selections a LOT. And even then, I do not live in Germany, UK, France, etc. I live in Portugal. So if i’m lucky I can have something sent from those countries.
And, judging from what I see in their pages, all their laptops are WAY above my range, the lowest I saw I think it was $1700, except for some dell that its $1350, but I can buy one that outspecs it in my local store (and with windows…) for far less euros.
So as rapont said, what I was saying is that I would like to buy a ibm/sony/acer/toshiba/hp/fujitsu laptop that was supported BY them, and that I could buy on local mall or something.
Here I can buy a decent Laptop for 700 Eur. It does include Windows, but who cares. And chances are that most of your hardware is supported by a good linux distro like SUSE or Kanotix.
It’s great to see more coportate and companies selling solutions with KDE as primary Desktop.
Yes i agree with you. This is a good start and hope a lot will follow.Maybe someday even AppArmor finds it’s way to the desktop versions.

Agreed there has to be a sufficient demand, doesn’t necessarily have to be complete PC’s though.A better hardware support in terms of enclosed official chipset drivers, better hardware vendor support for Linux would be fine to start with. There’re a lot of Linux users worldwide who would prefer the mobo with the penguin logo on the box.Add all those parts together and soon you will have complete supported systems.
as far as I know Suse has very good sony vio support….. but it has been a while since I used suse…. I could be wrong
I concur. It’s great to see more companies (or in this case enterprise) offering Linux instead of the usual O.S. This again shows that Linux is not a “toy” O.S. anymore, but a serious, stable, secure and scalable O.S. that has a lot of benefits on other O.S. 🙂
