Everyone from geeks to the occasional home user is moving away from desktop computers to the laptop. There are many reasons for this. Price, processor power..
Uhhh? Laptops aren’t exactly known for being cheaper and more powerful than desktops.
Other than this, it’s mostly a common sense article.
I’m still waiting for a GPS or Internet-based tracking system that will let me follow the laptop back to the thief, either as it moves around (GPS) or when it’s online (Internet).
It seems to me that these are nice unexploited markets…
In the U.S., you can get a low-end laptop for around $500.00 USD, and a low-end desktop for about $350.00 USD. While the desktop will have more RAM & a larger hard drive, the portability of the laptop will justify the extra expense & lesser specs in many people’s minds.
You mean a guide written by someone who steals laptops?
Heres a few things I did to protect mine:
1. Boots straight to hard drive
2. boot up asks for two different passwords: one to boot initially and a second to access the hard drive to boot up from
3. boots straight to hard drive and access to BIOS requires a seperate password
4. password required to log into Windows
I think i’ve done enough to safegaurd my laptop. There is always a way around such things but if someone steals my laptop (I dont have sensitive information on there as of this moment) they arent getting a freebie. They gotta do a little work if they actually want to use it!
1- buy a Glock or Beretta
2- Learn to shot
Either that or plant a small explosive charge in it. The guy steals it, gets about a block away, and you push the button. If that doesn’t discourage thieves, I don’t know what will.
…I know what will discourage them… you can lay mines all over the backyard… and if the thieves happen to steal your laptop at home… watch the fireworks! Keep the dog(s) on a leash though… 😉
