Colony CD 2 is ready. This is the second in a series of milestone CD
images that will be released throughout the Breezy development cycle, as
images that are known to be reasonably free of showstopper CD-build or
installer bugs, while representing very current snapshots of Breezy. You
can download it here.
ok.. after reading TFA i could answer my previous post

Thats coming along nicely.
seems this release is f**cked up . won’t start the xserver on my lap and the pc (ati, nv )
same here
http://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel/2005-July/008535.html
I think this is because of they don’t have the driver for your card.
From the release note :
“There are no restricted drivers or firmware (fglrx, nvidia, madwifi, ipw2100/ipw2200, etc.) for Linux 2.6.12 in Ubuntu yet. We apologise for the inconvenience. If you own hardware that requires such drivers or firmware, you might be best advised to wait for the next milestone release.”
I cant wait to try hopefully ndiswrapper will work on my laptop this time around!
I should be good with the missing drivers my laptop is so old.
I’m an admin on the Ubuntu forum…but I hope they don’t have a headline for every colony release. Breezy has been super buggy lately, and I would hate for someone to try out a colony and think less of my favorite OS.
>>I think this is because of they don’t have the driver for your card.>>
yeah i read that , but ati isn’t listed , and the vesa driver
doesn’t work too . too bad there are mainly ati and nv cards
in most of the machines out there .
but there is another release ๐
Little off topic.Got my Ubuntu cds today and now running it as a live cd on my Mandrake 10 file server to type this.
Not a bad distro at all.The brown is a bit of a turnoff but will fix that in time.Need to do a little more poking around when I get its destination machine finished. That in mind anyone here use it as a web server?
Pete, it does list ATI as not being supported, the ati drivers are referred to as FGLRX.
But I just migrated to Ubuntu and i am quite impressed with the ease of this distro.
Ok needs some optimising and getting rid of cruft but Synaptic seems very easy to utilise as is apt and once optimised it runs very fast. I also like wxvlc which seems to really do the job of DVD playback very well.
Alsa was a little awkward but that is more due to my lack of knowledge and my card Ice1712 based Hoontech. Still all is well and running great except that I can not seem to get to be able to logout/shutdown/reboot from desktop. The dialogue quickly flashes by and then I get dumped into GDM which is a real annoyance as my TFT is not seen as my primary screen with Nvidia’s TwinView enabled. It’s my TV instead and I wish Nvidia would work with Xorg to get this crap working properly. Still, I just use the one finger salute and APCI takes care of shutting down for me but it would be nice to have it dialogue based.
That said, it works nicely, is well integrated and with the other reps allowed, gives you all the software needed. Now to look into Audio Applications and get them up and running. Found that a real pain on my old distro as was gst-plugins that screwed Rhythmbox.
Well, it needs lots of work!! I’ve downloaded x86-64 and PowerPC LiveCD to play on my Athlon64 and Mac mini…
Both failed to boot into something usefull. Black screen and that’s about it.
Should i try the install and abandon my Windows 98 and BeOS dual boot? Or should i wait untill colony 3 or later?
If you need to ask, either install Hoary or wait for the final Breezy release.
But, if your current setup is working fine for you, you really don’t need to change at all.
Ubuntu is great!
If one uses the Ubuntu Forums http://www.ubuntuforums.org and the unofficial Ubuntu Guide: http://ubuntuguide.org/ they might find Ubuntu even easier to use.
I had hoary but i never got sound or my belkin card to work.
Neither as “nv” nor “vesa” here.
The CDs we’ve distributed were explicitly ordered through shipit.ubuntu.com, and sent to interested universities and cyber cafes. None have been “dumped”.
I like the brownish look. It’s fresh compared to the blue and green looks of other distros.
Conservatives ?? Don’t count on them. They are slowing down the development of new technologies in some way. The way of fresh thinking.
Ubuntu is the way to go. And to all the people who are bitching about some distros artwork etc: you have the possiblity to change it. You are free
I’m a bit disappointed with Hoary because it locks up accessing my external ntfs partition. I don’t know how to fix it. The odd thing is the live cd runs just fine with it. I hope Breezy could fix this problem. I really like Ubuntu as a solid Linux distro.
..when is the Kubuntu-equivalent for this release be out? does anyone has the info?
I have only three problems with Hoary (Kubuntu) on my G4 iBook:
1) USB stops working after I wake the laptop from sleep.
2) Video-DVDs are pain in the butt to get to work.
3) aRTs doesn’t let me to play sounds from multiple programs.
Would an upgrade to Breezy C2 help me in these cases?
I have been using breezy since colony1 and have daily run synaptic. All has been well. Synaptic is a time saving wonder.
If, when you see brown it disgusts you because it looks like feces I would suggest you see an analyst. maybe you can not tolerate red as it looks like blood. yellow because it looks like snot. etc. etc.
If ubuntu disks were dumped like aol disks i think we would be on our way to showing the pedistrians an alternative to microsoft.
breezy can see my ntfs winxp partition. it uploads pix from my oympus stylus 400 digital though i have to manually mount usb.
nautilus cd burner is misconfigured but cdrtoaster works after adjusting default settings.
i’m betting on ubuntu!!
I don’t know a solution for your first 2 problems, but with the one below:
3) aRTs doesn’t let me to play sounds from multiple programs.
It’s known that aRTs can’t process multiple streams, hence the problems with those programs. Perhaps someone knows something I don’t, maybe they can help. But aRTS has reached its end of life for KDE and I know that there’s a major overhaul (or completely new sound engine – I’m still a little hazy on this) coming in KDE 4.0. ๐
“It’s known that aRTs can’t process multiple streams, hence the problems with those programs.”
When I start Frozen Bubbles and Enigma on my SuSE 9.3 (x86) the sounds and music of both games will play, but when I do the same in Hoary (ppc), only the sounds of the first game work. The other game just complains that there aren’t any audio devices available. Ok, I don’t want to run two games at the same time, but the situation is the same with any other program, e.g. amaroK and Kaffeine. Even if I don’t have any music playing in amaroK when I start the other program, it will still possess the audio device without compromise.
X server fails on every system I have no matter what the configuration of the live cd. Dont bother with this build.
I sincerely hope they don’t have to ship them by way of Switzerland this time…the last time they were postmarked as coming from there…
