Wondering what’s up with OpenSolaris after its launch? Well, we have spotted what seems to be the first public distro of OpenSolaris on the wild. Joerg Schilling has released SchilliX, an OpenSolaris-based UNIX Live CD and distribution for X86, AMD64 and EMT64. It is based on Solaris 11 (Nevada) Build 17+.

…it includes cdrecord?
some screenshot – as usual – here:

it’s a bit off-topic: are ther any chances for java for linux/ppc after (relactant, and still not full) opening of java. i mean sun java.

The above link looks slightly more “official” and up to date than the link from the first post. This link also helps you get to the download page.
Looks like a very interesting project. I can’t wait to download this live CD and try it out.
nice, i have just plunged into OpenSolaris, i must say i like JDS, takes a while to load on first boot, especially on a Via C3, pitty my NIC and sound arent supported out of the box mind, but 3rd party drivers downloaded on another machine remedied that. i’ll probably download this distro sometime in the next week or so and give it a try.
That was quick. It hasn’t been opened up all that long and there is a distro.
Sure, port it yourself. Maybe the Polaris (OpenSolaris/PPC) people will be willing to help.
I believe that IBM supplies a java for Linux/PPC… RedHat has been shipping with IBM’s alternative to Sun for a while now.

Jörg Schilling actually posted elsewhere that on AMD64 architecture, the CD won’t boot. It will fail with a kernel not found message.
This LiveCD each too much RAM
256 or 512 MB to boot SchilliX?
My computer will say “No sufficient memory. Halting.” (my computer has 192MB of RAM)
I haven’t nothing against SchilliX, but how about reading the files directly from CD (compressed)?
ssSolaris…
but on topic, very nice to see open solaris popping up so fast, always had a sort of soft spot for sun
A live cd seems like a nice clean option to snif out open solaris.
Where the heck is link to iso image itself? I don’t want to mess with SPS or watever. Gimme an iso!
Here’s the downloads page…

I can confirm that.I got the message:”panic:cannot open kernel[amd64[unix…..”

Jörg Schilling has been working on that for months together with a publicly paid student helper (so-called “HiWi”, what’s the correct English word for that?).
High-quality-Wireless? =)
In the above post i was only joking (with an other name) …
on-topic now:
@netpython
maybe the OpenSolaris kernel on SchilliX is compiled without amd64 support? or you are using an EM64T?
ops! not specified my name…
excuse me
From the README on the download sites:
“Known Bugs:
<snip>
– Does not boot on amd64.
This seems to be a result of the missing amd64 kernel binaries
(doe to space optimizations in the RAM disk) it may help to
modify the GRUB command line:
kernel /boot/grub/multiboot kmdb -v -B kbd-type=German
to something like:
kernel /boot/grub/multiboot kernel/kmdb -v -B kbd-type=German
or
kernel /boot/grub/multiboot kernel/unix -v -B kbd-type=German
<snip>”
downloading right now….. gonna check it out next time i reboot….. which hopefully won’t be for a long time
I don’t like to reboot lol
called “HiWi”, what’s the correct English word for that?).
They are somewhat like to what you would call a “teaching/research assistant” in a US university. I think German universities usually do not do not have a precise differentiation in the way students are supported, and sometimes, those research hilfswissenschaftler also get assigned teaching jobs.
that caused all the trouble with cdrecording on Linux a while ago?
I remember around 2.6.8 kernel I couldn’t burn CD’s in Linux any more for a few months and had to go do it in Windows.
And his name popped up a lot in the explanations why all this was happening.
Someone said he made two versions of the cdrecording software (one free and one he was selling) and refused to fix the free one to work with 2.6 kernel.
If that’s the guy then I think I’ll stay clear of his distro.
Never know when he pulls some dirty trick again.
If that’s the guy then I think I’ll stay clear of his distro. Never know when he pulls some dirty trick again.
The only people who pulled the dirty trick are those Kernel developers that turned CD burning from a proper process to a hacky one. How can you call him deciding he didn’t want to do something “dirty”, it was his program that he freely provided without renumeration. Get off his back, and show us your contribution or shush.
@Anonymous
You’re right.
1) Jorg Schilling makes only flames wars in the documentation, is always blaming *BSD and Linux
2) For 1 month (and I don’t know the reason) my CD writer (using cdrecord) always burned inusable CDs (with 2.4).
3) This OpenSolaris LiveCDs is not surprising. In the documentation (with the blames) you can easily learn how he is a sun guy. In the documentation there are no blames to SunOS/Solaris
If you have problems with cdrecord you can use cdrdao (http://cdrdao.sourceforge.net) and only on linux the new-born NeroLinux (but you need at the moment the NeroWindows license )
Jorg did with cdrecord , what Easy Software Products and Codewears did respectively with CUPS and Wine , i.e they maked a commercial version. This is bad, the GPL license wants programs open to all… these commercial guys’s mind is not…
The Anonymous I meant in the above post is
(IP: —.bchsia.telus.net)
i hope this helps to no make confusion

The beauty of grub is you can edit what’s passed.
kernel /boot/grub/multiboot kernel/unix -v -B kbd-type=German on a AMD64 3000+ 1024 PC2700 DDR.
look… Jörg has put a lot of his own time into cdrecord, what he does with his work is his own business. Personally I am thankful that he released cdrecord as open source at all, if anyone out there feels they don’t like the way he does things…fork. I am sure, like the rest of us, he has to put a roof over his head (and possibly a family?), can you blame him then if he asks for some remuneration?
@Che Kristo
OK but Jorg is arrogant and boring. Always blaming on anything (except SunOS/Solaris)… he also seems no collaborative at all. And, with the new-born NeroLinux (if NeroLinux won’t die), if he sell a commercial cdrecord within 3-4 years he may be kicked from this (CD burning) market.
Another time, if you don’t like Jorg’s personality
or you switch to cdrdao or you fork cdrecord or you use NeroLinux…
And, selling software, is probably good for his family, but not good for yours because you must buy the software…
RESULT=
JORG’S FAMILY +$$$$$$$$$$$$
YOUR FAMILY -$$$$$$$$$$$$
ehm… food!
Supermarket’s staff family +$$$$$$$$$
Your family -$$$$$$$$$
oh…
Power!
Power companies staff family +$$$$$$$$
Your family -$$$$$$$$
etc..
oh wait…
say you work as a hair dresser:
Power companies staff family & supermarket staff family get’s haircut -$$$$$$$$$
Your family +$$$$$$$$$
Phew…for a moment there I thought someting was wrong
Right,economy.

I might be wrong, but I don’t think that message is caused by SchilliX. I remember reading a blog post on Planet Solaris where one of the developers described how the new boot architecture (with GRUB) has increased the need for memory.
I can’t find the blog right now but try taking a look at Planet Solaris or Planet Sun
It was an ipotetical message…
I’ve not used yet Solaris or OpenSolaris
this happened because I’m not at home…
and here (where I’m connected) I use a different ISP
Cheers,
Tails92
No GUi seems to installed by default.
hehe, well put. However there is something wrong, some people will look a gift horse in the mouth and act indignant if some teeth are missing. In my neck of the woods, we call these types of people “bums” or “ingrates”.
I am really curious about OpenSolaris, but I won’t use SchilliX, instead I will wait for another distro.
For those of you who speak German, here is the reason:
http://www.heise.de/newsticker/foren/go.shtml?read=1&msg_id=8007395…
I’ll try to translate. Someone said “I would really like to try OpenSolaris, but after your (i.e. Schily’s) embarrassing show, I’m no longer interested. The effect of your behaviour is the exact opposite of what you intend.”
Schily’s reaction was:
“Well, there are far too many misbehaving Linux trolls here.
It’s interesting that it is no problem at all to communicate with real human beings. You must decide whether you want to belong to the embarrassing Linux zealots or to the real human beings.
If you are a real human being, then you will be interested in OpenSolaris and SchilliX.
But if you are an embarrassing Linux troll, then I can do without you very well since there are enough people who are interested.
…those who are not curious are no human beings…”
It’s clear: Schily acts out of pure hatred rather than out of technical interest and he always scares people away by insulting them even if there’s no reason.
There’s obviously a huge lack of social competence, but hopefully, there will be another distro in the next months.
@G.W
You’re absolutely right!
Read the cdrecord READMEs (documentation) and you will read more of those blames and flames without reason.
One from README.ATAPI:
>When cdrecord has problems with ATAPI drives on Linux >this usually is a Linux
>kernel problem. The Linux kernel maintainers >unfortunately refuse to correct
>their current IDE driver system setup which does not >support ATAPI by default.
>ATAPI _is_ SCSI over IDE transport. It is hard to >understand why Linux still
>uses a default driver setup that is designed for IDE >CD-ROM drives made
>before 1994 (using a IDE compat mode that only allows to >use the drive
>read-only) and does not handle to send SCSI commands to >ATAPI drives by
>default. This makes it hard for people who just started >with Linux to do
>CD-writing on Linux if they own an ATAPI drive. Both >Linus Torvalds and
>Alan Cox admit that they don’t own a CD/DVD writer, how >should they know about
>the problems?
What? Linux doesn’t support IDE/ATAPI? Jorg is just trolling
And Alan Cox and Linus Torvalds have a CD burner… if not they wasn’t able to burn distros… and to try ISOLINUX!
So what is doing Jorg? He is doing SOLARIS TROLLING
He is a solaris-fanatic , A FANATIC OF THE SUN!
He kills x86 & ppc in favor of UltraSPARCs!
i.e Jorg is “Sailor Sun” )))….
Another one from README.ATAPI:
>It looks like the Linux kernel folks are not very >cooperative 🙁
Jorg, you are collaborative?
Ehm… really not
You always troll , blame and flame!
let’s not forget:
schilling purposefully makes mangled makefiles, which spew garbage to the screen with gnu make.
the makefiles are designed to work only with sunone studio for solaris, or his own clone; the shilly makefile system (smake), for linux
