Hyperion Entertainment announced the immediate availability of the final intermediate update of Amiga OS 4.0 prior to its full commercial release later this year. People can testdrive the latest release at the upcoming ’20th birhday of Amiga’ celebration events in California and Sweden.
I enjoyed both AmiWest and AmiGBG events last year. With both events to be held on the same day I had to choose and I decided that I will be attending AmiGBG 2005 to celebrate Amiga’s 20th birthday. Believe me, the Swedes know how to throw a party!
The Frieden brothers (core OS4 developers) will be there as well. Lots of goodies, still to be announced. Stay tuned.
bravo! this is awesome! i think this time is serious.

now I have to put the money where my mouth is and go get a microa1… time for some serious saving.
i think i am going to start saving money too!!!!
Even thought I live in Sweden I’ve never been there. Maybe I should go, do one have to dress up?
Yep, the update looks good, and in time for the 20th Anniversary shows.
IBM will be attending the AmiGBG show, as well, Mikael Haglund (IBM) will be one of the keynote speakers, to discuss the PowerPC line and the new Cell processor.

Johan: You don’t need to dress up for an Amiga show, infact it seems the Amiga crowd is a crowd of freaks and outcasts. You’ll have a blast! That’s one thing about Amiga you don’t always hear about is the community. It’s strange how users of each OS seems to carry a similiar presence. It’s almost like astrology…

LOL, preferably wear a big boingball hat and put a nice Amiga Tattoo on your forehead.
No seriously, I have been to lots of Amiga events these last couple of years and most Amigans are very casual, kind and ethusiastic about their hobby. It’s not like Trekkie gatherings!
I can imagine that by reading some (mostly more geared towards Amiga alternatives) forums that Amigans would look like depressed war/doommongering-trolls.

But that’s far from the truth. Just have a look at some pictures from last year’s event yourself:

OK please disregard anyone in the pictures who wearing black-troll AROS t-shirt….
It´s quite funny for Portuguese speakers when someone says something like “do one have to dress up?
” specially when they also add the emoticon in the end regarding the Amiga.
In portuguese, the word AMIGA means something like “girl friend”. You guys gotta see the face of my friends and people whom I talk with when I say that there is a platform called AMIGA. They keep staring me, clueless…
Back to the topic, I hope that the Amiga platform can gain enough traction to keep the “PPC on the desktop” thingy going on now that Apple gave up… It wouldn´t hurt if they can manage to get IBM and Mototrola to drop the prices of the hardware a little bit in the process, too.
Nice release from the README, I will upgrade this evening.
Now it’s time for us to develop cool and usefull apps in a more furious way
Well done Hyperion ! keep up the good work !

“Even thought I live in Sweden I’ve never been there. Maybe I should go, do one have to dress up?”
I’ve heard about the Swedes being unashamed of walking around their homes naked,
but I do believe you should dress up to go to this event
some jeans, trainers, T-shirt I advise. Or otherwise a tux (tucs?).
Ah, I can’t wait for the Amiga…
Will any new hardware be coming out sometime soon too? Especially in time with the release of OS4?
AmiWest and AmiGBG are on the same day.
Is there going to be a major announcement or something?
I mean the “final intermediate update” to OS4 has just been released. I wonder if this means it’s an Alpha release and OS4 final will be released simultaneously at Amiwest and AmiGBG. I’m suspicious.
Ok. Going back to my happy place now.
“Will any new hardware be coming out sometime soon too? Especially in time with the release of OS4?”
Eyetech have stated that there are two new board designs in preparation, but they can only go ahead if there is some industrial order big enough to pay for development. The number of Amiga consumer customers isn’t enough to cover the costs of prototyping and setup.
I believe one board has got as far as a prototype and the other is only a design.
So IMO the current Micro A1 motherboard is the only hardware for a while yet. It seems to be a good replacement for the A1200.

Amiga Inc already shared some hints that they have AmigaOS4 running on some mystery hardware.
However with regard to porting AmigaOS4 to any other hardware the AmigaOS4 development team has made it clear that they first want to finish AmigaOS4.0 for currently committed platforms, namely being Amiga classics expanded with PPC hardware and AmigaOne boards.
A new batch of MicroA1 hardware should become available through AmigaOne dealers and some dealers still have some stock left. You can check AmigaWorld.net’s frontpage for links to A1 dealer homepages and contact them with regard to availability.
“I wonder if this means it’s an Alpha release and OS4 final will be released simultaneously at Amiwest and AmiGBG.”
The Final Release of AOS4 will not be released for several months yet. “When it’s done” is the official date.
There is still a fair amount of work to do.
However, the latest update can be used to demonstrate the system.
On June 18th, yes in a few days, there will be an Amiga meeting sponsored by the North Carolina/South Carolina Amiga User Group. Details are on the website for the exact location of the meeting which will be in Charlotte, NC. We will be having a cookout to celebrate 20 years of Amiga.

The official statement with regard to the difinite release date of OS4 still applies: “When it is done!”
But surely the AmigaOS4 team present at AmiGBG will be able to demonstrate the components which are still in beta and haven’t yet been included in the latest update.
When It’s Done. Nothing’s official until officially launched, eh? When The Time Is Right, hehe.
And then…all hell breaks loose
