The founder and chief architect of the popular Linux distribution Gentoo Daniel Robbins, has taken up a job at Microsoft. He describes his new job as “helping Microsoft to understand Open Source and community-based projects”. While in the midst of hastily packing to move to Redmond, Robbins nonetheless managed to find the time to finalize the transfer of Gentoo’s intellectual property (essentially copyrights on ebuilds and other software as well as soon-to-be trademarked Gentoo logos) to the not-for-profit Gentoo Foundation, Inc.
Daniel Robbins gave a lot of his time creating some great software. But at the end of the day, when you have a family, you have to make ends meet, and I am sure that he felt this was the best way to do it. Only he knows why he chose to work for Microsoft, and it really isn’t anyone else’s business…
The best way to take down the system/the MAN is from the inside.
Go Daniel and maybe the force be with you.
…of the beginning of that cheesy movie that was a thinly veiled attack on MS, Antitrust. He isn’t helping Bill to build a network of satellites to spy on would-be computer geniuses is he?
I highly doubt that Varg Vikernes ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Varg_Vikernes ) submitted this story.
First SCO and now Gentoo’s main man … i guess there isn’t anything that money can’t buy.
What’s next? … Linus Torvalds joins the board of director’s?
Ya know when Microsoft starts their Linux new department Linus Torvalds it will be the best person to manage that you know. At that time You will have the choice between MS Windows and MS Linux and because of historical issues the former will be closed source wether you like it or not and the latter will be open to the masses.
Amazing hire.
Quite fast for a remote connection on GNOME. I`m looking forward to studdthis technology more and more. Also, I want to know more about OpenVPN, the Open source VPN solution.
Kind of makes you wonder if M$ is going to be coming out with Micro$oft version of Linux? I think this is in the near future you can laugh at this, but it could happen.
I bet it will be like MS Java…. completely insecure compared to the other implementations (on purpose).
That way they can push some futureproprietary NT-based crap on the unsuspecting public.
MS Java->.NET meet MS Linux->Windows 2010
There already is a MS Linux. It shipped in 2003.
http://www.mslinux.org/
Yeah, MSlinux is great. I started to use it on MS´ Mars Colony.
He is going to feel the power of darkside. sob sob sob ~~~
Microsoft shouldn’t be worrying about Linux right now, they need to concentrate on Apple and its new strategy with Intel.
MS, could care less about apple’s move. If anything it helps them by making x86 stronger, might speed up the death of BIOS, and will make them making software for mac a bit easier.
MS won’t worry until you can by Mac OS for home built computers. And even then Apple would have to start charging 500-600 bucks per copy to keep development going so MS wouldn’t get to nervous.
Are we going to have to compile everything ourselves in future Windows versions?
aaaAAAHHHHHH(sellout)CCCCCHHHHHOOOOoooo
hehe.. I just bought that movie to add to my collection os cheesy crud on dvd ;P
Its fun to watch, but man is it cheesy!
magical, another RMS Emulator seeing the light of capitalism.
He describes his new job as “helping Microsoft to understand Open Source and community-based projects”.
Robbins: “See, it’s like a community of people helping each other out. People working for a greater good, not for money.”
Gates: “I don’t get it.”
Robbins: “Um, yeah, I’m not so sure either. Used to make more sense.”
If the guy behind the most respected Linux distro can’t make enough money to live well (even after clearly publicizing his situation, as he did a couple of years ago), there’s something wrong indeed with the “community”.
Does this mean MS won’t be claiming that Linux is like a virus? Well, at least on that hasn’t infected Windows? It might be fun to see what happens the first time that it is proven that there is GPL code in Windows. (I’m not saying that there currently is.) In the past Microsoft has been more than willing to illegally use code. For example, when you could actually find Stackers name in DOS 6 by just looking at the files with debug.
most respected… it must be comedy hour @ http://www.osnews.com.
Used Gentoo for a long time until it killed my underpowered Shuttle SV25 due to heavy compiling (no joke!!). Gotta love that distro!
What I’d like to know is whether Daniel tried to secure an employment with IBM, Novell, or HP. Going to MS and trying to help them “understand open source”? That sounds like he either is naive or he is overestimating his own power.
Anyways, here’s YASWS (Yet Another Star Wars Satire):
Danakin: How can I save my family from the terrible dreams I’ve been having?
Billpatine: The MS embraces the great power with passion, not shying away from it like what they taught you at the OS council.
Danakin: How can I learn this … great power?
Billpatine: Not from an OS nut…
Daniel already said he needed money to support his family. This proves how hopeless open source software is. If the developers don’t even get enough donation to live a better life then screw open source.
There’s a big difference between relying on donations for your survival and having a business plan. Obviously he didn’t have the later. Gentoo is a hobbyist OS with a small niche and no way to make money besdes relying on donations.
Someone with a brain in the Linux community should have realized “source distro” is a good feature for Red Hat, NovellSuse, etc. It is the only way to generate a fully trustable build (potentially trusted). No closed source software can be trusted (mathematically impossible).
I knew a couple of guys that worked at Microsoft in the past (they probably still work at MS but I lost contact with them).
I never heard bad comments from them, only good things. One of them was even an open source defender. You may hate Microsoft, but it’s a good company to work for. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Daniel pro-Microsoft in a year or two, most people that work are MS become fan of their products really fast.
This guy should definitely be in J Leno’s Show……….:)
For a movement that touts freedom and sharing I think this is a fitting solution. Instead of some epic battle against a giant corporation we seek to turn our enemies into partners. Good show.
I hope this is MS first attempt at really wanting to be part of the open source community instead of trying to buy it. I sadly shake my head hoping for the best.
If you read the article, Robbins is focusing on helping Microsoft understand Open Source. This should be welcomed as compared to the old destroying Open Source tactics.
You guys have all the time in the world to predict this and that. Daniel already said he needed money to support his family. This proves how hopeless open source software is. If the developers don’t even get enough donation to live a better life then screw open source.
Him not making money is NOT because of open source. Did he charge for Gentoo? Nope. Did he offer pay-for services for Gentoo? Nope. Did he have any form of business plan for Gentoo other than a little Donate link on Gentoo’s webpage? Nope. So how exactly is this the fault of Open Source when he didn’t try to make money? Most of the top contributors to the kernel make money for working on it. All of Red Hat’s and Novell’s employees make money. I could go on and on.
Microsoft shouldn’t be worrying about Linux right now, they need to concentrate on Apple and its new strategy with Intel.
Yes, Apple’s next to nothing market share on servers compared to Linux’s 25% is something for MS to fear. I bet they are shaking in their boots right now. ‘Cause, you know, all enterprises are either going to pay the Apple premium or illegally crack and use OS X on whiteboxes.
Plus, on the desktop, OS X is still going to be locked into Apple’s PCs and most home users won’t pay that or take the time necessary to crack OS X to run on their whitebox. (Most people I talked to cracked every version of Windows up to XP, where they gave up cause it was too much work).
Robbins: “See, it’s like a community of people helping each other out. People working for a greater good, not for money.”
Gates: “I don’t get it.”
Robbins: “Um, yeah, I’m not so sure either. Used to make more sense.”
Here let me finish.
Gates: “Oh, so you realized that Open Source is an evil virus”
Robbins: “Well, it could have something to do with me not even attempting to make money from Gentoo….”
Gates: NO! It is because Open Source is evil! Repeat after me: OPEN SOURCE IS EVIL!
Robbins: Yes master, you are absolutely right!
Someone with a brain in the Linux community should have realized “source distro” is a good feature for Red Hat, NovellSuse, etc. It is the only way to generate a fully trustable build (potentially trusted). No closed source software can be trusted (mathematically impossible).
That’s what Source RPMs are for. Or Source Tarballs. Duh. And I’m sure the NYSE would love having to compile the Enterprise Systems they pay top dollar for, effectively having to administer and support it themselves.
If the guy behind the most respected Linux distro can’t make enough money to live well (even after clearly publicizing his situation, as he did a couple of years ago), there’s something wrong indeed with the “community”.
You forgot to add the distro that has almost no place in Enterprises. (The bread and butter of Red Hat et al)
Score one for Globo Gym!
I mean, er, Microsoft.
Him saying he’s going to help MSFT understand Open Source is just an attempt to try to lessen the attacks he knows he will get from the linux zealots. He’s not going to help msft with open source, he’s going to do msft stuff. who are you guys kidding. msft is paying him to do msft things. Instead of you guys say “Hey great work, sorry to see you go, thanks for all your contributions” you attack the guy because he isn’t doing what you want (namely work to give you free stuff).
..and your enemies even closer. The old proverb says.
I wonder if there will be other hires of this kind, in Microsoft.
Must… repress… ..comment… …about hungry Linux developers…..
Gentoo was a hobby that didn’t payoff.
A big reason for this is that Gentoo is more for linux hackers . Not exactly the target market for the people that don’t want to mess with os nuances.
I think the easy linuxes like lindows and lycoris are making money by easy install but their business model seems more like to lock in people to their os by not adopting standard installation system.
I believe they want linux to be difficult to use so they can keep that niche to themselves.
I truly hope He did not get backed into a really strict NDA (non-disclosure agreement) that make any development of any type in future hard.
“money can reverse a river flow”
Maybe MS got a little bit smarter and presents next Longhornix.
“Developers come and go, but zealots are forever.”
“Developers come and go, but zealots are forever.”
I take that as a compliment.
that developers have honour where as zealots are trash
Now lets hope he can assist MS in understanding open source.
Knowledge is pain.
Who said they changed their goals ? They changed only the tactics…
and leave the talk to the dilletants, trolls and of course the zealots.
Think this way. If Daniel Robbins can make MS software secure, easy to use, better value for money, not buggy, it is good for the world and anyone who uses computer. Most people don’t like MS because of their buggy software.
Most people don’t like MS because of their buggy software.
How come they have such a large market share?Or is the majority plain stupid?
Most people don’t like MS because of their buggy software.
How come they have such a large market share?Or is the majority plain stupid?
Short answer : yes
Long answer : I have no time to explain
Good for Daniel Robbins. All that matters is the huge pay check, having fun and enjoying life it does not matter if it’s for microsoft or for linux they are only products.
http://blogs.msdn.com/jasonmatusow/default.aspx
Isn’t Gentoo the distro with the ”if it compile – ship it!” motto?
If yes? I guess this is the right job for him.
Bill Gates: “To cheat death is a power only one has achieved, but if we work together, I know we can discover the secret…”
Daniel Robbins: “…yes, Sir…”
After reading all this stupid comments I just felt like saying thank you for giving us a great distribution and putting a lot of effort into Open Source and good luck at MS. (Not that he’ll read it, but anyway:)
Just to clarify some things..
Gentoo does not have any silly motto about if it compiles, ship it.
Drobbins hasn’t really been involved in the OSS community for a while now.
store.gentoo.org has nothing to do with Gentoo, and they have no control over it. All of the money goes to drobbins (despite what the site says), and the content of the site is all down to him, despite the fact that he no longer has anything to do with Gentoo. However, Gentoo are forced to put a link on http://www.gentoo.org to it. So when people order stuff and it doesn’t get delivered, or when ads to pyramid schemes get put on there, or when drobbins says he’ll ship gentoo CDs that haven’t been released yet, etc, etc… it looks bad for Gentoo.
Whilst drobbins started Gentoo, for a long time before he left he was probably doing more harm than good (*cough*pathspec*cough*)
However I think the man resigned from Gentoo back in 2004. Quote from http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/about.xml :
“In April 2004, Daniel decided to resign from his development responsibilities within Gentoo. We are all very grateful for all the work that Daniel has put in Gentoo and wish him the best.”
Can’t see how this is going to affect Open Source and Gentoo except the “he’s joined the Dark Side” feelings.
Or you think Microsoft will give him a piece of paper and tell him to write a plan on completely eliminating OSS?
IMHO stuff like the Internet and P2P (especially Gnutella) have come out of control. It’s not like
1. Buy or employ major OSS figures
2. Understand Open Source
3. ???
4. Kill OSS
5. Make profit
This is one of the strong sides of GNU: if a project or even other projects die, they may be reborn with new people taking control or their best sides will be incorporated in other projects.
Maybe Gentoo will finally get an easy installer?
“Maybe Gentoo will finally get an easy installer?”
I fail to see what that has to do with anything, but at least one gentoo dev (maybe more) is (/are) working on an installer. There’s even a channel for it on irc.freenode.net
Maybe if people would stop LEECHING from opensource and actullay donate some time or money we wouldn’t loose brilliant minds. Most Linux users I know of can afford 10 per .iso hell even 10 a month or week but alot dont do jack. This is why linux will have a hard time keeping developers beyond college. Real life has a way of changing things.
-nX
CIA gave them some cash couple of years ago. Dangerous strategy. Man’s life is only couple of grands per year, and if you employ them, you don’t even have to pay them in advance.
Living on donations may seem romantic to some, but not having steady money is not good when you have a family.
Had he put together some sort of “call now and we’ll quote you a customized system for your company” plan, he probably would have had STABLE, sustainable income. Gentoo is known as being fast and difficult to install/customize, many people need the speed and would pay (companies, not individuals.)
There are a lot of business plans for open source software, obviously selling the distro to individuals (who have lots of time to learn and are cheap) will not get you $$$. Asking these people for donations will not get you sustainable $$$ either.
I still think the idea of bounties for an OS would cover A LOT OF GROUND, where if someone wants an idea implemented, THEY RAISE FUNDS FOR IT.
If you wanted some special type of networking stack for your custom hardware device, you could pay some developer to create a driver for you for example.
“Unless someone steps up and changes the way things are going, Linux will fail within 5 years.”
That is what they said 6 years ago.
Daniel is our FORMER chief architect and he is pretty unrelated to gentoo right now (he did quit a bit ago).
Whatever somebody does with his life is just his, and his friends, concern.
“Good for Daniel Robbins. All that matters is the huge pay check, having fun and enjoying life it does not matter if it’s for microsoft or for linux they are only products.”
Amen to that. The person who was comparing Nazis to Microsoft seriosly needs a good dose of reality. Last I checked MS is “evil” for making lots of money, and being powerful. Nazi Germany is evil because they started a world war, and systamatically exterminated about 11 million people.
“Amen to that. The person who was comparing Nazis to Microsoft seriosly needs a good dose of reality. Last I checked MS is “evil” for making lots of money, and being powerful. Nazi Germany is evil because they started a world war, and systamatically exterminated about 11 million people.”
They got to german goverment 6 years before they started war. No one stoped them in 1933 and 6 years later was “too late”.
I love gentoo. It is my favorite distro, and the one running on all my machines. I am deeply saddened to see Daniel Robbins go to work for Microsoft. Portage is one of the greatest things to happen to the Linux world in recent years.
I myself have a family to support, so I know what it is like to have to make compromises and work for an employer that isn’t in the “open source” world. However, I have to wonder why he choose Microsoft. Was it just the money? With his OS expertise, I find it hard to believe that he couldn’t find a top paying job somewhere else less evil, and more in line with the open source community.
It is very confusing to see someone who worked so hard on an OS where the foundation is to be open, flexible, and unrestrictive go work for a vendor that has a history of being EXACTLY the opposite.
Well, it is a free country (for now anyway, with companies like Microsoft, Disney, and organizations like the MPAA, RIAA, corporate backed laws like DMCA, and liberty stripping laws like the Patriot Act… who knows where we will be in 10 years) so I wish him the best of luck and lots of money.
I don’t like to use the word “Stupid” but you could be right. Computer is too complicated to use for most people and MS OS does provide an easy option.
I like to compare MS software to fast food. It is easy to get and digest but it may not be good for them for long term. If fast food company makes healthy meal, this should be encouraged.
Domination may not be always bad. If all people in the world speak English and use Linux, would you be happier ?
Novell should be the one hiring that guy.
MS are actually working on trying to get their products to work with others. They want the sys admins to use MS products to maintain Windows and *nix systems.
See the video here:
http://channel9.msdn.com/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=64981
And tell me that isn’t a good thing.
Most people don’t like MS because of their buggy software.
How come they have such a large market share?Or is the majority plain stupid?

So, your basing that off of what? The companies history?
Cuz the way I see it, MS has a history of monopolistic behavior, restrictive licensing, uncompetitive practices, etc.
New technology comes out? MS acquires the company. They hinder innovation instead of encourage it. Explain to me the difference between Office 97, Office 2000, Office XP, Office 2003, or whatever… as far as i can see the only “difference” is that you have to pay more to stay “current”.
MS wants to enter a market (like gaming, or I don’t know maybe the Internet with web browsing)? Simple, they make a system and sell it at a loss to put others out of business. That’s great for the consumer right? Wrong!
Wake up and smell the reality.
You said: “MS are actually working on trying to get their products to work with others.” and then: “And tell me that isn’t a good thing.”
When has that EVER been a good thing? Go ask all the companies they put out of business that they “worked” with.
While I think Joe really nailed it I have to admit to being as mercenary as they come in my basic role as migrant code labor and we all do what we have to. Therefore by the power vested in me as keeper of the tao I hereby absolve you of your sins, may the great emancipator have mercy and forgive all for we know not what we do.
> Last I checked MS is “evil” for making lots of money, and being powerful.
Helping the chinese government opress the population doesnt help either. But hey, it’s just businss so no need to care about tedious stuff like human rights and freedom speech.
Let this old fart offer some help to those who see Linux as being killed because of this.
First of all, Open Source is a development process, not a business model. Open Source is the scientific method, applied towards software development. Nothing more, nothing less.
Second, Microsoft doesn’t pay all that well. They tend to give stock in lieu of higher pay. I know first hand as one of the folks that does development work for us now, (and a very good friend of the family) is the former senior developer at Microsoft who actually taught Microsoft people OO programming.
Third, I wish this young gentleman good luck in his endeavor. Anything to help expand the mindset at Microsoft is a good thing.
Fourth, are you an expert at kernel programming? Do you have a strong mastery of ‘C’ and ASM? How about C++, PHP4-5 and GTK/QT? We’re hiring. We can’t find enough good Open Source developers. If your interested send us your resume. Warning: We do test before hiring. If you claim to be an expert at kernel programming for example we will be asking plenty of questions and wanting sample code.
Fifth, Microsoft can no more kill Linux than they can build a multi-user OS. They’ve had 25 years to do it and still can’t.
I wouldn’t lose any sleep over Microsoft. Their idea of innovation is calling index.html -> default.htm
In other words they take what already exists, tweak it so that it’s incompatible with the current standards, rename it and call it their great invention.
Again, I wouldn’t lose any sleep over Microsoft hiring Linux people. Remember they hired some kids before and it had zero impact. This is one person making a personal employment choice. Again, zero impact.
Cheers,
Nick
I love the posts where Daniel Robbins is criticized for not having a good business plan to make money from his Gentoo work.
Here is a reality check for everybody that thinks this way: not everyone is a business man, ok? If that was the case, then every business would consist of a single person running it.
This is why people go to work for companies…so they can concentrate on what they are good at.
Instead of appreciating what Daniel Robbins has done for the community, some of the posters here are so shallow as to think they are somehow betrayed and that he has joined some sinister dark side. How childish.
Open source would not exist were it not for companies that employ people so they can eat and write some GPL code in their spare time, along with “evil” corporations also contributing to open source and GPL code. That’s how it works, I think.
Congrats to Daniel Robbins on putting in a lot of effort to make a name for himself and get hired by a great company that can help him live his life the way he desires.
Forget all this MS jealousy…right now we all have an alternative to MS, called LINUX, that can do everything MS OS’s can, and more, for less. Monopoly, what monopoly? How can there be a monopoly if there is a free alternative that people can use as soon as they like?
I like to eat, don’t you?
So, your basing that off of what? The companies history?
Cuz the way I see it, MS has a history of monopolistic behavior, restrictive licensing, uncompetitive practices, etc.
You’re kind of missing the bigger picture here. Whether good or evil, Microsoft is simply doing what corporations are designed to do – make as much money as possible by any means necessary, so long as they can get away with it. MS is merely a by-product of a system in which it was created under. In other words, it is a sympton and not a cause.
MS is doing what most any other corporation (such as Redhat or Mandrake) would do if they were in the same position as MS. Just look at Netscape – bitching and whinning about IE not being standards compliant. But when NS was king of the hill in the browser wars, they didn’t know the definition of the word standard. And after watching Apple do what it does with its iPod device (essentially locking out any competiting file formats from the system), I’d hate to see what it would do with 95% of the desktop market share. Sheesh, and you think MS is bad
Novell should be the one hiring that guy.
Exactly – surely he could have found an OSS oriented company or organisation to work for……… suprised nobody picked him up.
> Fourth, are you an expert at kernel programming?
> Do you have a strong mastery of ‘C’ and ASM?
> How about C++, PHP4-5 and GTK/QT?

how to contact you? URL?
chers Jan
Yeah, perhaps you’re right, the problem is with greedy corporations set out like packs of hungry dogs plucking away at decomposed meat.
Have you seen the documentary “The Corporation”?
it’s not fair, but life isn’t fair
Were hiring developers in the categories I mentioned in my first post and sales people as well.
If you are outside the United States and don’t mind being paid via PayPal please don’t hesitate to send us your CV as well.
please send all queries to careers at ionisys dot, com
Cheers,
Nick
Have you seen the documentary “The Corporation”?
Yeah, I did. And unlike Michael Moore’s F-9/11, I noticed that the Conservatives were strangely silent about it. Wonder how come?
Michael Moore is an idiot, and …. shutting up now
sorry, off the subject…… just cringe every time I hear that name
Do you know Python?
C++ / QT knowledge a plus.
Do you have good over-clocking / Kernel Optimizing skills?
Most importantly are you a good team-player?
(We like friendly people)
Then join us at Yoper!
We won’t pay you
.. but still it will be nice to have you around
“MS are actually working on trying to get their products to work with others.”
look people, common sense should tell you that this is absolute bs. first of all, if microsoft really wanted their products to work with others, they would just adhere to the standards. thats it. there is no “trying” in involved. just f-ing do it!
secondly, microsoft doesnt need open source developers to understand open source software. the code is publicly available, and i would certainly hope that of all companies, microsoft already has developers capable of understaning it.
the end.
As an early Gentoo-er (Ive been on OS X for a couple of years now), I’d just like to say thankyou to Daniel for all the work he (along with others) put into Gentoo and its original concepts. Good luck for your future.
as we type
if only there was an automated way to disable everything i dont need on the kernel.
it can’t be that hard to write such a script
You’re kind of missing the bigger picture here. Whether good or evil, Microsoft is simply doing what corporations are designed to do – make as much money as possible by any means necessary, so long as they can get away with it.
What kind of crap is that? The bigger picture would not equate good and evil, just because they co-exist.
“As long as they can get away with” something, then it’s OK? Talk about being an apologist. What would you think if corporations bought political influence, and used that power to direct our nations military to invade other countries, killing innocent people just so they could secure resources which would make them a lot more mone…
Um, never mind.
I can’t see the reason for panic and angry, if MS pays him to work there, he must go and be happy, maybe he had to work just for gentoo and live for donations, but , this way he will live in completely poverty.
I agree with glaucius. Many open source supporters, like me, are still working with Micro$oft’s products because of earn living. Not every linuxer like Mark Shuttleworth, he has already been a millionarie before Ubuntu linux born.
What’s more, there is not only one Linux developer in the world, What developers come and developer go is common.
Good luck to Daniel Robbins
Daniel was living hand to mouth while working on Gentoo, he really sacrificed alot for the project. He has a wife and kids to look after though. Now maybe this job will put a little more padding in his wallet.
Thanks and good luck Daniel.
didnt M$ purchase, no they invested in a unix/linux management company or some such thing less than a year ago….
could a MSLinux be possible, or a MSBSD or some such…SOmething big is in the works i got a feelin….
Eugenia throw us a bone, cause sumthins goin on….
they also hired a lot of head honchos a couple years ago…
sorry, misc ramblings, mod away
Pull of the dark side is indeed very strong.
Hope the Jedi nights keep doing their work, but take care, Lord Vader is here.
May the force be with us.
He’s probably working for health insurance. You hit 30 or so and you start wondering who’s gonna foot the bill for your annual procto exam.
any body has any idea what M$ trying achieve with thier Linux Labs division ? Are GPL IP/code into thier closed source OS or improving their core system by merely reverse engineering GPL stuff into thier product …maybe its like
Linux Code renginnered + Integrate with Longhorn + Lot of money = Product better than Linux
or they are going to change thier core to unix like Apple OX or maybe launch M$ Linux
whatever is it sure seems something sinister ….
we need to ancipate and launch counter operations………
SOMETHING IS COOKING………………..
any proof anyone?
>>SOMETHING IS COOKING………………..

Virus.
Daniel will teach Microsoft the internals of linux.
Expect huge number of Linux virus, really, really bad in less than one year.
May the LInux Power take you to heaven as well
not only microsoft..
