It’s what I was waiting for to upgrade from 3.3. Now for the packages to get into emerge and I’m set!
The packages are in Portage, and have been for several days. They’re hard masked right now, however. Should be migrated to ~x86 soon.
They are in portage and not hardmasked
A good source of up-to-date .debs for KDE? I mean, does anybody know about a (non)official repository for up-to-date kde packages for debian sid?

I hope someday 3.4 will be *officially* released for Debian 3.1 unstable… not only through that obscure alioth repository (with non-functioning packages) 🙁
Those packages worked great for me… That “obscure alioth repository” is the work of the same people that will bring you the “official” packages.. They’ll go into unstable sometime (soon) after Sarge is released.

I’m using it since last week end ! Thanks to the almighty archlinux package manager !
I second that! Upgraded without a hitch, even before the official release.
does it fix the problems with kubuntu? (konqueror crashing)
3.4 might have been the buggiest KDE release ever. I hope 3.4.1 is better.
I am using mandriva’s cooker packages and 3.4 and 3.4.1 has been very stable even tho I’m using cooker.
Fixes kopetes current inability to connect to msn, buggfixes all around. Niceness. I can’t help but wonder how many will be bitten by this one though..

Hopefull not too many.. I guess we are about to find out the truth of the saying: “Real men don’t take backups. But they often cry.”
Will updated packages for Suse 9.3 be provided?

I am talking about official packages available via Yast’s online update. I don’t want to install anything on my terminal server that Suse doesn’t officially support.

Don’t know then. Did they track point releases before? I’d suspect they’re sticking to 3.4.0 and backport critical fixes only.
The packages on ‘supplementary’ are created by SUSE. However, they’re not officially supported, because they will stick to 3.4.
I’ve used the supplementary packages for a long, long time, and their very good. So don’t worry and upgrade to 3.4.1!
H.
It’s in NetBSD’s pkgsrc already =)

is there are reason the ebuild for KDE 3.4.1 is masked and the default seems to be 3.3.2? Is that just because 3.3.2 was the newest when I installed this system? Is there any sense in waiting for it to be unmasked?
While I do prefer KDE over Gnome or other desktop GUI I find it still is an issue when using Konqueror to browse certain sites. Such as with Firefox I can easily perform tasks such as deleting junkmail in Hotmail but with Konqueror it will pop open the junkmail confirmation delete window but does not execute the command to delete the mail. Also Kopete needs a serious overhaul of it’s UI and tools. There are constant issues with MSN accounts that are unaccessible due to what the Kopete developers claim is a MS changing protocols issue. Though with other messengers such as aMSN and Gaim this is not the case. Also both aMSN and Gaim have announced they are working on webcam and VOIP support which can be found in the CVS. Where as with Kopete the only option is to use a third party software such as GnomeMeeting with a plugin. Other than those issues I find KDE a much better product than Gnome for both the home and at work.
> is there are reason the ebuild for KDE 3.4.1 is masked and the default seems to be 3.3.2?
Yes. Gentoo masks experimental packages until some people have tried them, this will persist for a while, especially for relatively important components such as gcc, glibc, x11, and popular window managers and desktop environments.
> Is that just because 3.3.2 was the newest when I installed this system?
No, there is absolutely no connection; all that means is that you installed recently. When a newer version is considered sufficiently stable, you will have access to it without any configuration changes on your end.
> Is there any sense in waiting for it to be unmasked?
Yes. From your questions, it sounds that you’re relatively new to Gentoo, and possibly linux. Sticking with the packages marked stable is therefore a good idea for you; you’ll have less problems, as other people will discover the major problems in major packages like KDE before you try the newest version.
All you need to do is ’emerge sync’ every once in a while (once every couple of days is a reasonable amount), and ’emerge -vauD world’ to check what system updates are available.
Gentoo packages software nearly as soon as it’s released (at least for major software; some smaller projects are packaged a bit more slowly.) The developers mark it “unstable” and mask it in various ways (keywords and package.mask). After some testing, it gets marked “stable” and you can upgrade; you can upgrade to unstable packages, but it requires playing with keywords or /etc/portage/package.mask, and should only be done when you have a good reason to use an unstable package.
I’ve been using KDE 3.4 for a while; the changes to kpdf are nice, and the default k icon is nicer, but I find it much less of a change than 3.2 to 3.3 was. There’s no real reason to hurry with the upgrade.
but with Konqueror it will pop open the junkmail confirmation delete window but does not execute the command to delete the mail.
Please check bugs.kde.org if the problem is already present, and if not file a new bug.

Fixed in 3.4.1.

Kopete is developing audio/video support too, just check the kde-commit mailing list. Also, Skype support is being worked on.
