Since most of OSNews’ U.S. readers are enjoying their Memorial Day holiday weekend still, here’s something for a segment of our Eurpoean readership: Belgian business-oriented tv channel KanaalZ has a (dutch) report on its website on open Source.
Two case studies are explored, one of which is the town of Schoten‘s switch to FOSS for its intranet solution.
The opposing case is presented by a Microsoft spokesman.
Translation of the text at the page of that ‘report’ (?):
“Software is expensive en copying is dangerous. The use of free software – the so called Open Source technologies – has its pro’s and cons”.
And that’s it.
The video doesn’t load for me… :/
(not even using The Exploder)

Try pushing the “Ctrl Z” text with videocamera icon.
Ha, must be nice for those who have the day off today. That’s what I get for working in retail
The town of Schoten uses Linux, Samba, eGroupware and Mambo. It cites cost and ability to adapt the software to their own needs as the most important factors.
The opposing side, a mailorder company, used open source as a startup but later switched to Microsoft. Reasons cited are cost of open source experts and the need to interoperate with their suppliers (windows based) software.
Microsoft comes along with the usual FUD like “you now have to pay for support for Linux” and “there are more people trained to use Windows”
The reporters conclusion : “If the shoe fits, wear it.”

Exactly what part of intranet don’t you understand ? ๐
Well, it seems that CanalZ chose to broadcast its content in a proprietary format (moreover, a Microsoft add is on each page …). For those who speak French, I’ve put a .ogg version of the film here: http://jepoirrier.free.fr/media/050526-canalz-winvsoss.ogg (French transcription: http://jepoirrier.free.fr/media/050526-canalz-winvsoss.txt).
About the content itself, CanalZ made some mistakes (OSS != free as in free beer, FUD from MS itself about maintenance costs and support).
Anyone know a way to watch it in a decent browser?
Damn you, proprietary formats!
stupid holidays
