If you though the subject of DRM and Trusted Comouting had gone away, think again. Intel is adding DRM capabilities to its new Pentium D chipsets, but as with AMD, they’re not that keen on talking about it. Aside from DRM, there’s also this gem: Additionally, AMT also features what Intel calls “IDE redirection”…allow administrators to remotely enable, disable or format or configure individual drives and reload operating systems and software from remote locations, again independent of operating systems.
“I think the situation can be summed up under the heading of respect….”
Oh, I agree entirely, but I think respect, like so many other points we’ve shared on here is double-edged too. Had the music industry for example treated it’s customer base with respect and with something called “common sense” then maybe, just maybe the whole p2p situation might not have got so out of control. Corporations which treat their customers with contempt deserve contempt, in my opinion.
“…Violating copyright “because we can” isn’t going to help “the cause”, and in fact may hurt it by providing the justification, as well as making the job of those who are fighting against all of the above within the system, much harder.”
I don’t condone mass copyright infringement, I just understand why it’s happened, and have bored friends for years with my vision of a free information society. I find the FFI concept of a “media tax” much more compelling than the current ancient system of distribution. It’s the only alternative to the drachonian “rights” systems we’re currently force-fed.
“Plus I’m not “implying” that all artist are against file sharing. Like I said, it’about respecting the artists wishes. Ask yourself this. If you told me not to share whatever you produce with a thousand and one people and I did? Wouldn’t I really be sending the message “I don’t respect you and I’ll do whatever I want”? ”
I’ve asked myself such questions many, many times, and to be honest I think I’d have a similar response to those artists who are deeply saddened by the cack-handed way their representatives (Corporate Media companies) have “made examples of” and demonized MY fans.
You are right though, I agree that this IS a social problem and that the ‘ol Pavlov’s Dog bell and response system is pretty much the scheme by which we all function in society. You should check out the book I mentioned, Cory’s ideas of a future social reward structure are interesting, you’ll find the idea of “Wuffie” interesting I’m sure
“I think you’re missing my point. Respect for others is waning in our society. However you chose to define “others” it is happening. From someone plagerising someones personal web-site all the way to someone making mass counterfits of say a brand name. It’s not about “business models” and it never was.”
I didn’t miss the point, I agreed mostly. I made a counterpoint, because I understand media and content, particularly when it’s delivered through the internet. This website has copyright content, it’s just as valid a creative output as Coldplay’s latest CD if you add up all the hours and value it’s design. Yet, we are not EXPECTED to pay the creator every time we read it, print it, or pass it on. It benefits from a completely different business and funding model, or as you put it, “reward scheme”. 21st Century style.
Wasn’t this about CPU DRM? Oh yeah It’s been interesting, BR
