Half a year ago, I shared with OS News my favourite way of installing Debian. After a while, though, the manual procedure gets rather boring. So I automated most of it, which saves me at least 10 minutes per installation. The script works well with the latest Knoppixes, that use 2.6 kernels by default (better S-ATA support).
I’d like to know more about this scrip. Does it work only with SATA? (That is the way it looks)
Does it work only with Knoppix or also with derivatives like Kanotix? (I believe the answer is yes)
I have read the actual script and it works indeed only for RAID 1 or 5.
It works with any device and any live CD with software raid support, and mdadm and debootstrap installed. I also expect standard utilities like fdisk to be there. The reason I use the latest knoppixes is that they have all this, and with their 2.6 kernels, superb support for the devices that I use.
It’s in no way limited to S-ATA or Knoppix. That’s just what I use most of the time.
It does only work for RAID, but if you specify only one drive, you get a RAID 1 array with one of the two drives missing. That way, you can easily add a second drive later, to mirror the first.
Thank you! it sounds very interesting. I’ll definitely try it. I’ll use Kanotix, it has superb hardware detection.
Thank you for your excellent page about installing debian on a raid 1 system. I’ve just recently used it and I have to say it r0x!
The only thing I could have wished for was a little bit more debian information, for example, how to get to the “usual” debian installer options (e.g. going through choosing locales etc.).
-pug
Well, you get such a clean system that no locales are installed by default. When you install them, of course with apt-get install locales, it’ll give you the same configuration screen you’re used to.
