“Ok, the time has come. We must begin the process of coming up with a new name for the nascent operating system we now call OpenBeOS. Why? Well, as has been pointed out so many times by various people, the name BeOS is a registered trademark and is now the intellectual property of Palm Inc. Using a name that includes that moniker is asking for trouble down the road… particularly if OpenBeOS becomes successful.” Read and suggest a name over at openbeos.org (not on our forums please :). In related BeOS news, the BlueEyedOS project (formerly BlueOS), published a status report.

..how about… CommentsOS… cos its always bloody mentioned in the comments of every article.
You know you are exactly right. Ever since Be went under they get all kinds of press anytime anyone is talking about any OS. Always mentioned in the list of other OSes that already performed the reported on feature back in 1997, etc…
actually look at how many names have been submitted already and see if there is anything worth considering… I tell you, I sure wouldn’t want to be the one having to pick through all the dumb names to find the decent ones in the list and then have to further sift through the good ones to find the better ones and then finally the best name. With 1000+ names offered up already, it ain’t gonna be an easy task, that’s for sure!
i always thought that openbeos as a name would lead to trouble, sooner or later, glad to see them changing it. also, good to get it changed while it’s still young. my two suggestions have already been mentioned (FreeOS & Phoenix) so i feel faintly vindicated in my mooting of such names. i will now stop my herbal alpert and his marijhuana brass band impression with myself
“My ass”
That way when people go “Wow! What’s that software you’re running?”, I can reply “My ass”.
It works in other situations too!
“Wow -Sweet looking desktop. Is that Windows?” “No, it’s My Ass!”
Or the ever popular: “What would you suggest I use instead of Windows?” “Oh, that’s easy; You should use My Ass!”
Of course it’d help with Bills pro-windows speeches: “Why use My Ass when Windows XP has so much more to offer?”
FreeBe
thats a cool name I think
How ’bout NewBe. =)
Actuall, I do like FreeBe quite a bit.
OSNews doesn’t need any more names for operating systems, it has plenty already. Go put them where the article says to put them instead!
BTW Don’t suggest names without looking at the list that have already been contributed, and especially don’t suggest OpenBeOS (duh) BeOS (double duh) or the names of other existing operating system projects.
Please don’t submit joke names. It only makes the job of the list manager more difficult.

Has Palm contacted the OBOS team about using the BeOS name?
While I agree that it’s wise to change the name to avoid intellectual property issues with Palm in the future, I must say that the OBOS team must believe that Palm may indeed release a desktop BeOS in the future. Especially considering how the MSFT case is moving along.
I like the name BeOS and would prefer OpenBeOS for the Open version. Perhaps they should ask Palm for permission to use the OpenBeOS name. Palm may very well choose to rename their TBD desktop OS to something else and may not care about the BeOS name at all. But then again perhaps they do care. I sure would like to find out!
Dan Johnston create beincorporated.com and put be.com up for sale. be.com expires in 2011. Is Palm interested?

BeOS by any other name wouldn’t Be the same! The OBOS team should write to Palm about using “OpenBeOS” before changing the name. If Palm says not to use it then we can come up with a new name.

Why can’t they just use OBOS and give up the explanation regarding what it means.
If you look at the suggestions so far at openbeos.org 90% appear to be “joke” names. How will anyone be able to wade through this mess? It’s nice that everyone gets to show how clever they are, but doesn’t anyone think that naming OpenBeOS is just a little bit important?
Although some people hated the name “Be”, I loved it and think it’s got to be one of the greatest names I’ve heard for anything. Not only did it give the company & product mystery and “zen-ness”, it was easy to remember, easy to affix to other names, and didn’t conjure an actual image so it wasn’t tied ball-and-chain to some cartoon mascot that is further divisive.
Because the “Be” name is such a hard act to follow, I would think some people might want to spend a little extra effort thinking of a name that isn’t absolutely stupid. Filling the suggestion box with all this crap just says “we don’t care”.
Think of it as a tatoo – you only get one chance to get it right. Haven’t you ever felt sorry for someone who’s still covered with the world’s ugliest tatoo’s when they’re 50 because they got drunk one night?
Humor’s great but the name is really going to influence the perception of anyone who’s thinking of trying OpenBeOS – I think this is a pretty important moment, so don’t make it harder than it has to be.
how much do you think it would cost to purchase the rights to the name “BeOS” from palm?

I have thought in this name 2 months ago. This a nice name, case the OBOS project creat a corporation and fabricate your OS. In this case, the OS will call NewBeOS!!!
NewBe, Inc.? Yeah!!!!!!!!!
What is with all the hostility? What ever happened to “To each his own”? If you don’t find BeOS or the OBOS project to your liking just don’t use it.
“PALM AND BE DON’T WANT TO TALK TO US. It’s as simple as that. The OBOS team has most definately tried contacting Palm and Be about using the trademark and have had no luck.”
Those two have and continue to act in an odd fashion. Ultimately, i suspect they have to completely ignore anything to do with the BeOS. Why? If MS comes to the conclusion, erroneously or not, that Palm wants to be a player on the desktop then MS will increase its efforts to destroy Palm by an order of magnitude. Sadly, despite the ongoing trial, MS can still leverage its massive power to do just that.
So change the name and stop the jokes everyone.
BeOS/2
what’s wrong with OpenBeOS? there are lots of OpenWhatever knockoffs. OpenSSH, OpenNap (oss Napster), and on and on. OpenSSH had some small trouble with SSH confusion, but SSH is maintained by a company that is still around. BeOS is not. There is no trademark dilution when all Palm wants to do with BeOS is use their engineers and a little from BeIA to create the next-gen handheld OS. OpenBeOS is for desktops.
I like FreeBe probably the best.
I think, however, that a new name is the least of the worries of this project. I would rank getting some applications that run on it a higher priority.
I thought BeOS was really cool (except for the user interface’s yellow tabbed half-width title bars and the fisher-price look and feel) but there wasn’t much I could do with it because it lacked the applications I needed.
Oh, this should bring out the ire, but it is my honest opinion of BeOS.

I hate those things…they look nasty and you have to click on the tab to move the window, it is like streching out of my wayto move it. I want to just grab the top bar anywhere and move it.
I think the yellow tabs were more a signature than a UI improvment.
just make them titlebars and not tabs please.
I must say I am really annoyed by lame suggestions.

If you’re “jus kiddin'” *DON’T post the bloody thing!*
Am I the only one that finds this very, very annoying?
Anyway, I must say I quite like the “mOSquito” suggestion.
If we have contacted Palm and Be to no avail, then it’s OK to use the name OpenBeOS and beside it is not the exact same name as “BeOS” anyway.
We may wish to send a “certified/return receipt” letter to confirm that David Nagel and Dan Johnston have received the letter.
Until Palm or Be says something, we should keep using OpenBeOS!
OpenBeOS is a very cool name with very cool graphics on the web site.
Microsoft probably expects Palm to release a desktop OS sooner or later as DANO is a very slick OS even in it’s unfinished state. Moreover, Microsoft will try to kill Palm anyway for the handheld market, so heck with the co-existance mentality. While it’s always good to keep plans private until the right time, Palm should not be worried about retribution from Microsoft for developing a desktop OS.
If Palm and Be say nothing, we should keep the OpenBeOS name!
ciao

Hmm, you probably don’t use BeOS very much but…
You can move a BeOS window by grabing any edge of the window.
You can also change the tabs to full length title bars.
I happen to like the tabs, and yes! it *is* a great UI improvement!

Why use a different name?
Palm does nothing with BeOS anyway so they don’t own the moral rights to the name.
‘Symphony’ (not symphonyOS, or any such thing, just ‘Symphony’)
This opens the door to all kinds of other names/musical metaphors like calling the kernel ‘Conductor’, or calling the networking stack ‘Trombone’ (heh). Anyways, I’m in favor of a name that implies a whole set of other names for the components. Other OSes do this and it helps to maintain consistency instead of having a bazillion acronyms or technically descriptive (but cryptic to the layman) names like ‘app_server’.
my my my……heh………
in a society such as the US, one must learn that what is Moral is not nessisaraly what is legaly right.
if Palm wanted to, they could sue the pants of the OBOS developers just becasue they have extra cash to spend on lawyers.
Brat, did you submit it on the OBOS suggestion box with that explanation?
I just noted that I was submitting it without and ‘OS’ at the end, not the metaphor stuff.
Oh, and it’s ‘Bart’, not ‘Brat’.
the “OS” letters give it an impression of “we don’t know what the hell we are doing but we’ll do it anyway and put it under the GPL”
an abbreviation would be excellent, like UAS (User Application System), or ADS (Advanced Desktop System)
Puma or Cougar – Names of an American Mountain Lion, that is very agile, sleek, and quick.
While I know you are guys probably want to get away from the word ‘be’ altogether, I have a suggestion that uses it.

Side note:
I like the name bob also as someone else mentioned earlier. Gives it a fun, normal, easy to remember name. And friendly!
Have no sense of HUMOR apparently.
Several posts so far have decried others (including myself) taking a well earned potshot at their favorite OS. That’s sad, really, since we are talking OPERATING SYSTEMS, not something really important, like violence in the middle east.
So get some perspective.
Be was a great company. They had a great idea. The OS rocked. They failed. The OS, at this point, is long in the tooth, and in dire need of serious upgrading, so the fact that a few fanatics are willing to sholder the burden of recreating the OS, that’s great.
But, its also silly, pointless, and ultimately wasted effort, since once the replacement parts are done, they will need to tackle the many hardware issues the OS has at present.
Additionally, there is precious little new software for BE, so spending alot of time on the OS seems even more pointless. Why spend all that effort to run a old beta of Groovemaker? And don’t get me started on Linux/bsd ports, which is most of what is showing up on BEBITs-if I want LINUX programs, I’ll run Linux thank you.
It’s funny that DUTCH and FRANCIS are worried about the branding of this experiment, rather than the future of the OS in general. Tattoo? Pleazzzze. Tell you what: throw an eyepatch on TUX and call it the New BE macot and be done with it (your taking BE’s intellectual capital, mating it to another kernel, and calling it new, so why stop at code?)? We will call it PIRATEOS!
Ahoy!
there is a difference between being funny and nasty. I for one think the OBOS project is very cool. I like the idea that i might have another alternative to windblows XP, which i loathe, and linux distros.
I thank these guys and i wish them the best of luck.
Have you ever even used BeOS? Moveable tabs make it so much more productive to use!
Hi,

1. We all know what it stands for
2. It’s a pronounceable acronym
3. Everyone is already familiar with it
4. There are no trademark issues
OBOS it is.
And now for something completely different:
>Have you ever even used BeOS? Moveable tabs make it so much more productive to use!
Indeed they are, but alas 5.1/Dano doesn’t include them.
At least you can still right click the tabs to throw the window into the background. Another example of BeOS GUI superiority.
BeOS (excluding Dano) shows that everything should be redsigned and improved, even titlebars.
I happen to like the tabs, and yes! it *is* a great UI improvement!
How so?
I find them to Be quite irritating.
Seriously, when I have two-thirds of a window sticking out from beneath another window and the only way to set focus and move the window in one mouse click is to click on the narrow boarder, there’s something wrong.
Minimizing the title bar to the point that it is easily hidden and a user must either, 1) click on the window to gain focus and then use the title bar to move the window or, 2) click on a narrow boarder, could hardley be called an improvement. The yellow doesn’t help much.
Like I said. I think BeOS was a great OS, exept for it’s UI and lack of applications.
I happen to use W2K, MacOS (emulated), sometimes even Linux but I still use BeOS as my fav OS. So you don’t care to use BeOS & want to piss on it. Well maybe you are just too jaded to think OBOS might pull it off & show up your OS for being the old dog that it probably is. Fact is, most OSes contain old code, & most all OSes borrow ideas & apps from each other. Looks like most of the -ve comments are from people that gave BeOS less time to explore than they could have.
I for one don’t want to be limited in choice to MS lock ins, Apple HW prices, GPL religion etc and look forward to an OpenBeOS by any name. As for names, I think it would be nice to honour one of the great scientists, thinkers of the last few hundred yrs, hundreds to choose from.

Buenas noches Latino, (Ai, que forum este).
My annoyance has little to do with being worried about the name/future of BeOS. Nor do I lack a sense of humour. I am annoyed by stupidity/lameness on forums etcetera in general. I also don’t see the fun in names being posted multiple times.
Humour is great, making fun of Be(en)OS is fine. There is however, a time and a place for eveything, and it’s called college. Anyway, posting lame names or names that have already been posted is a waste of the editors time, and anybody trying to seriously share suggestions for OBOS names.
Want to mock BeOS or some other OS/Person/Thing or say funny things in general. Fine! But *not* on the bloody OBOS name suggestion page. That’s not what it was intended for. Go find a forum instead.

Seriously though, “BeOS” was awkward anyway because you were supposed to pronounce it “bee-oh-ess” and that sounded like you were saying “B.O.S.” and if you walked into a store and asked for the “B operating system” they thought you meant 95b, it was just a lousey name, mostly because you couldn’t just pronounce it to rhyme with the earlier OS “Geos” which was natural. But for sentimental/defiant reasons the previous suggestion “FreeBe” is inspired, especially if it really will be free, and the idea of a bee for a logo fits well.
Best suits the new BeOS attitude…
And drop the OS. It’s been done.
Sandwich Boy
I should think that OBOS or even Open BeOS ought to be legally ok unless Be/Palm actually copyrighted that exact name. The USAF found itself in a similar situation with the F-16, whose original name was Falcon, but a French aerospace company had already copyrighted it, so the Air Force just changed it to Fighting Falcon which worked around the copyright, though at a cost of “stupidizing” the name. However, my knowledge of copyright law is slim, and IMHO the OBOS team ought to check with a copyright lawyer to make sure.
As for a substitute name, why not EOS after the Greek goddess of the Dawn? The symbology of the rising of the dawn after the long night is aprapos IMO.
Note to “JusWhitaker”
It’s not that we have no sense of humor, but rather your (and others’) remarks are merely childish and in poor taste and suggests that you (and others) require a tad more socialization amongst the animate than you appear to have heretofore achieved.

My name isn’t on some of the hate lists yet, but before it gets there, let me say that I think BeOS is a great OS.
No, I don’t like it’s UI much. QNX has a very similar UI, but did quite a better job on it in my opinion.
BeOS is better in every way than any other OS I have used. However, the UI and a lack of applications are a weak point in it. All I was saying in my original post, which is relevant to the discussion at hand I believe (must say this before the OSNews self appointed posting police Dutch Cap has me flogged), is that application support should be of more concern than what to call ourselves.
I think OpenBeOS should be named after a motto. OpenBeOS needs a lot of publicity so perhaps, Tell everyone swiftly that it’s coming, like expeditiously.
The only problem with that is the acronym for the new name is TESTICLE.
i like barts’ “symphony”. i think it’s smart. and descriptive…
i like the idea of having the os and related aspects sharing a similar idea. symphony, conductor, string section…i duno…personally i would prefer an acronym that would also have that sympothny effect.

What about BSystem (simple- B-be- System as in operating system), or how about BabyaBOS(Babya Be OS). The second one was just if I was to rename my app.
Offtopic, but… The title tabs in BeOS can be moved while holding down the shift key. This allows you to set up a series of windows, one behind the other, with each tab still visible, giving the effect of a standard tab widget (i.e. like Opera or Mozilla tab view, but with independent windows). This is a nice feature if you need to work with a lot of open windows in the same workspace. Also, windows can be moved from the tab, but also from any side of the window frame.
Disclaimer, I am not a member of the OBOS team. I am just an active supporter.
I agree that the name should be changed, not because of copyright/trademark issues, but because it will be a new OS. Sure it will be a clone at first, but after R1 it will become much more than that.
Right now is a good time to change the name because it is still a project that is growing up. It is soon to come of age though and should be officialy christened with a new name when it does. It will not hurt to start the process now.
Yes we have very little apps and hardware compatibility right now. How grown up was that certain Unix clone *cough* Linux in it’s first year?? How big is Linux now?? All those people who are nay-saying the OBOS project are only showing their own immaturity. GROW UP AND GET A LIFE! And yes, compared to OBOS, Linux fits the definition of LegacyOS. Don’t try and tell me otherwise, I know better. ;^)
For the rest of us, stay on focus. The general consensus of the OBOS team is to change the name(stop whining that you want to keep BeOS or OBOS). Changing the name will also allow us to progress to much more than BeOS ever dreamed of. Also, DANO is the name of a leaked version of BeOS. DANO has nothing to do whatsoever with OBOS and never will(get over it). I also agree that we need to keep some seriousness to the naming. We need also not rule out all ridiculous names though, I mean Microsoft? Windows? How much more ridiculous could it Be? 8^D
only one who know the value of the title tab! zealot, that is my favorite part of the BeOS UI!
BTW, until the name is changed I intend to call it Bee Oh Ess, because that’s what it is still!

Come on… If you’re just going to harrass those of us having a little fun in a public forum, what incentive is there for us to respond with real information???
I mean… Who the hell are you? To me you’re the BeOS equivelant of an old Amiga fan. Instead of being creative and getting the spirit of what was being said (Humor… Look it up in a dictionary), you immediately attack everyone, and then defend that position by saying “Keep in on topic people, this is THE renaming forum”
When realistically, I thought this was a news thread on a non-OpenBeos site wherein people can express ideas freely.
Not “The Dutch Captains Pro-OpenBeos Site”.
Perhaps you should take your oppressive ideas and ram them up your *BEOS*?? People like you take all the fun out of a project, and similarly make them less likely to get involved down the road.
I for one am reconsidering any support for OpenBeOS on my site, or in my business dealings simply because I don’t want to deal with a lot of uptight assholes like yourself.
Are you indicative of the whole OpenBeos movement? Probably not, but the way you make it out in this thread, one would think you are the OpenBeoS movement yourself.
Lighten up or shut up. You’re only hurting yourself and your chosen OS in with your diatribe.
I know it can be annoying wading through all of the junk data, but you must expect that people will tend to joke around. This is especially the case when they are doing something for FUN or for the HELL of it. We humans are not fond of rules and regulations. This is why we have ARMED police. This comment section has turned into a suggestion forum in spite of its author’s request to take suggestions to the “proper forum”. I’m sure most of the people joking around on the list would be more than happy to check a boolean device indicating if they are joking or not. This way the jokes can be filtered out with ease and maybe posted for those people like me who find the joke names a lot more interesting than some of the lame suggestions that read like crappy cover band names. With a little co-operation and a checkbox, we can joke around AND find a name for the OS without leaving some poor bastard with the monumental task of human-based data filtering.
I would also like to say that certain people have earned the right to have a little fun because they have been working there asses off. If BGA wants to post “Walter” as a name, I think he and others have earned the right to screw around a little. So in closing I present a few key points.
1) Take the stick out of your BUTTS!
2) Don’t invite hundreds of people to defy you when they
can do that quite easily and then freak out when they do
it.
3) Put up a place to screw around with goofy names or make a checkbox to allow people to mark their suggestions.
>Why so much anger jw, nb, a.n

No, it’s called taking the mickey…
I might want to get into OS X but I have no money right now, right now I use BeOS 99% of the time. I’ve been using BeOS since 3.2 and feel quite entitled to take the piss when I feel like it. (taking the mickey (or piss) means making fun of in case you don’t know…)
For the record I have put in some suggestions to OpenBeOS but these were the sensible ones.
—
> tabs
I like the tabs although you can’t move them in DANO. They probably could be improved upon, if the program/file has a long title it becomes one big tab thus removing it’s usefulness.
They are also in KDE as an option but never seem to work quite right, they auto arrange themselves and generally do a pretty bad job of it.
Hmm, Wonder when they will turn up in OS X ???

Why are people creating OpenBeOS? for their health? for the money?
I think not, I think the’re doing it for the fun, they enjoy using BeOS and enjoy developing it. If they didn’t they wouldn’t be doing it.

Apparantly you still don’t get it. I don’t give a damn what you say on *this* forum.
There is a page at openbeos.org where people can post and look at suggested names. The URL is http://open-beos.sourceforge.net/misc/name_vote/view_names.php go look it up. I was expressing my annoyance over people posting lame and joke names over there. And about people posting names that had already been posted. I was *not* talking about what anybody was posting on the OSNews forum.
Do you get it now? I’ll repeat it one more time:
1) I do not care what people write on the OSNews forums
2) I was merely annoyed over lame and joke posts at http://open-beos.sourceforge.net/misc/name_vote/view_names.php
Are people so bad at reading posts, or am I just bad at writing them?
Someone correct me if im wrong, but AFAIK the sliding window tabs will be included in OBOS. DANO excluded them, but DANO is *not* OBOS. Never was and never will be. 8^)
Dano was “BeOS 5.1”, OBOS will be more along the lines of 5.0 especially for compatibility reasons. Don’t confuse DANO with OBOS!
Maybe my posts have sounded a bit too aggressive. If so, I am sorry. In my first post on this topic, I was merely expressing some frustration. I don’t think I even expected anybody to seriously listen. I like to exagerrate, which made my post sound way more aggressive than it was meant.
Because my posts were misinterpreted, some people seemed to think I was attacking them personally because of what they were saying right *here* on the *OSNews* forum. I was *not* attacking *anybody* on the *OSNews* forum.
The last thing I want to be is a Fanatic Zealot that flames people who don’t like my OS. I want to be a Friendly peace-loving zealot. I’ll be more careful next time I express my frustration.
Can we go smoke pot and be friends now?
I got what you meant, but yes you did *sound* overly aggressive. Not your fault, it is difficult to convey your actuall meaning through words in an internet forum. 8^)
BTW I posted some of those “joke” names just because I found humor in them, and I posted a few serious ones. Just glancing at the list should be able to root out most of the flat out stupid names. I felt the same way that you did when I saw all the stupid names. I just did the “If you can’t beat them, join them.” thing though, it was fun!
If they have trouble sorting through all the names all they have to do is freeze the list at some point. Then post the final list and have the serious people parse it down to the good ones. Then once it is down to about 50 names, then hold a vote.
