That’s nice ! I’d really like to try this. Problem is market is so full of pocketPC that it really difficult to find a Zaurus in some contries (namely in france), and specially not for a decent price…
Sorry, 5500/5600 users are still stuck with 2.4.28, only because the porting hasn’t been completed yet. The sl-cxx0 series, on the other hand, I believe, have 2.6
That’s why I wrote ‘most iPaq’s’, and of course it will require a small amount of research before purchasing one:-) So you have to set research prior to purchase against added cost of Zaurus.
If you’re interested in running an alternative distribution on your shiny new C3000 then you might want to take a look at OpenBSD. The Zaurus C3000 is the most recent platform to be supported by OpenBSD. It is one of the two new architectures in the 3.7 release. For more info about 3.7 have a look at the http://www.openbsd.org/37.html page.
If you’re used to OpenBSD on any other architecture, then you’ll already be familiar with it on the Zaurus. The distribution comes with exactly the same software (even bgpd is in there) and features as OpenBSD on i386 or sparc64. The same ports tree is used on the zaurus too. This means you can install the same apps that are running on your desktop, copy your profile over and you now have your desktop in your pocket. I know of people making use of the ipsec support in openbsd to establish a vpn to their home network and mount nfs shares.
Despite the relative immaturity of the zaurus port it is very usable. The 3.7 release has X11 working out of the box, great input support, and we have better support for USB devices than any of the linux based distros I’ve seen. Development is still happening rather rapidly and hardware support is definately getting better. For example, in the last week or two support for the onboard audio was written and imported into -current.
But the display resolution was way to small, everything else works good, even wlan, sound and irda, wich where a pain in the *ss to setup in 3.5.1 are working prob.
Everything so far is great except for the fact that even though I was able to flash it from my SD card, the default kernel doesn’t have SD Card support so now all the data on my SD Card is stuck there for the moment… Now I understand why pdaxrom still had the 2.4 kernel =) I should really read the docs more carefully haha
I’m a SL-5500 zaurus user, I can’t wait to try openzaurus 3.5.3
Does it really have kernel 2.6?

You don’t need a Zaurus, you can run linux and Opie on most iPaq’s and they are fairly cheap these days.
Not all iPaqs are supported, or supported fully. The Zauruses are better supported.

amazon and others don’t seem to want to sell me one?
I am afraid the eBay is the way to get one. The SL-5500 ranges between $160 and $250.

Details on the status of the port and pointers to installation are available at http://www.openbsd.org/zaurus.html.
Are those Oki Opie? Cuz that would totally r0xx0r.
I just whait to sea Port for Zaurus C3000 😉 may be next time they will port.
Tried it on my SL6000 last week.

I better wait for the pdaXrom port.

I’m running OpenZaurus 3.5.3 and SD is fine.. Do you run linux on your pc? have any issues with 2.6 kernel on your pc and SD? doubt it…. exactly.
I bought mine from ShirtPocket.co.uk.
There service was quite dire, in that they took the money on the day of purchase, but then were uncontactable for 2 weeks, via either phone or email.
However this was related to an office move (NO EXCUSE!), I just recently received my SL-C3000, and am very happy with it.
So, you can get them brand new from them, if your willing to take the risk (buy by credit card, makes you feel much happier).
