Linuxlookup.com is reporting after spending weeks balancing pros and cons, Mandrakesoft has decided to change its name. The name change will apply worldwide to both the company and its products. Reasoning behind the name change, along with details are available.
word.
It’s man-dree-vuh, not man-dri-vuh, since that part comes from Conectiva, which was pronounced with a long I.
For three people I know, this was just the extra impetus they needed to stop using Mandrake/Mandriva and switch to Ubuntu.
Considering the name may be shallow — but it does matter, and who wants to tell people (especially windows users) that their OS is Mandriva?
I suspect they’re going to lose a lot of users.
Why not “ConMan”? Conectiva+Mandrake, much funnier for belated April Fool
I use Mandr* daily at work. I hate it. It seems like a pointless Linux distribution. I agree with the previous post that there is little about Mandr* to differentiate it from many other Linux distributions. What little they’ve added are just pretty wrappers to technical capabilities that are already available to users not afraid to download cvs sources and compile it themselves, or to work from the command line instead of a GUI. Worst of all, they charge money for their relatively pointless system. Everything I do on my laptop I can do for free with Debian instead of having to pay Mandr* membership fees to do the same thing. Maybe there is some thing that Mandr* has done which is truly innovative. I won’t deny that I don’t know lots and lots about Mandr* – I dislike the user experience too much to know it well. But it sure doesn’t seem innovative enough to pay to use. Bah. The best Mandr* install is one where rpmdrake has been used to uninstall everything, and then its been rebuilt from scratch by downloading the source. But then, it wouldn’t be very much like Mandr*.
The level of stupidity of those criticising the name in here is unbeliveably high
As a Mandrake user for the past two years I think the distro has a number of very nice features I haven’t seen elsewhere, but also quite a few rough edges which can be very annoying. The (in)stability argument is a valid one (everything is rock stable as long as you don’t upgrade the packages, but if you like upgrading as soon as the updated packages are ready things can go spectacularly pear-shaped) – and I’ve gone through a mini-nightmare since migrating to an AMD64 based machine. The club membership scheme also makes it one of the more expensive distros to run if you’re not in the corporate user category.
Having said that it’s one of the top two distros IMHO along with Fedora, with SuSE third and Ubuntu fourth. The new name is a horrendous choice though. It has no character, no style, sounds awkward in pretty much every language and projects a very amateurish image. If Fedora is a very good example of how to handle a name change right, Mandriva is the opposite.
To make it worse, it’s delayed the release of what would have been Mandrake 10.2.
Ok, so we have Mandrake and Connectiva to work with. How about these possible cominations?
Mactiva, ok I can see Apple’s lawyers going after this.
Mativa
Montiva, sounds like a casino in Monte Carlo or an expensive watch
Drakesoft, hey it could work.
Mava, sounds like a soap brand
CM Linux
Connectiva (hey Mandrake lost that lawsuit, weren’t they planning on dumping their name anyways??)
Condra , egad no! Sounds like an old Famicom game!
Mancontiva, eh..no. Folks?
C.M.O.S, sounds techie enough in an I.B.M kinda way.
Starsoft, well they seem to be keeping that star logo.
Star-Linux
Startiva, ok its possible, I wonder if the French word for star would work instead? Étoiletiva, no I can already see the Anglophones here having a field day with that one.
Étoile-Linux, hrmm
ÉC Linux, could sound like “easy linux” to some English tongues. Also, the company is still based in France, no? ÉC could in some ways pay homage to the old European Union name, the European Community.
Connectiva-Étoile Group
Étoilesoft, a more French version.
Estrellasoft, a Spanish version. Though I can see people calling it “Extra LA soft”.
Sorry, my friends, that is all I have for right now. I’m sure you all could come up with much more superior names than I have. If it is to be Mandriva, c’est la vie!
WORST NAME EVER…
Sounds like some male sex toy.
