At BeGeistert 14 Daniel “daat” Teixeira from IsComputerOn and Chris Simmons from HaikuNews spent 40 minutes interviewing YellowTab’s Bernd Korz and Alan Westbrook, and we covered such topics as the use of GCC, Java, what’s new with Zeta, and more. Pictures from the event here.
Or this guy is running OSX inside Zeta?
http://www.iltuosistema.it/galleria/details.php?&nomefile=begeister…
yes, there is pearpc available for beos/zeta.
Either:
a) ImageView looking at a screenshot, as you said.
b) VNC remote controlling an OS X system.
c) I have heard of some sick tweakers getting Basilisk II (http://www.bebits.com/app/447) to work with OS X.
no, it is PearPC. OSX can be emulated under BeOS/Zeta.
wow, really boring interview
Hi guys!
I can’t download this vídeo file (read: no internect connection to do this )
Somebody could transcript this interview to a text file???
Regards,
Michael
What an interview. How professional. Bernd is crying about what people write about him on message boards. Wow. What a leader. I have never seen Apple or for that matter Microsoft cometing on something like this. I’m german and I would love to see this company succeed, but this is just a pathetic, unprofessional interview.
Operating Systems are really interesting to me so I’d like to learn a little more about Zeta. I believe it’s based on BeOS is it not? I think I saw BeOS for a few minutes one time but I don’t remember much about it.
What is the goal of Zeta? Is there a LiveCD people can demo? Is there a demo version people can download and install?
” I have never seen Apple or for that matter Microsoft cometing on something like this”
Ever saw Gates playing Forza with Conan? Not able to hit the gas while talking at the same time and have is steering hard coded to the direction he look (as in look at conan and bnag the all at 90 degree).
It’s a very casual interview, take it for what it is. Still there is new info in it.
Some Zeta screen shots

I thought that the interview was rather good. especially the way Bernd graciously commented on the slander he’s had from some message boards.
Also the part about cooperation between Haiku and Zeta on drivers was good.
It just continues to reinforce that Zeta poses no threat to any BeOS cause. It should actually benefit everyone by drawing attention to the great work that Be had to leave unfinished and through Zeta’s cooperation with Haiku and other open-source projects.
I’m working on one, should be up tomorrow.
Fair enough. What I have seen so far from Bernd, be it in german or english I thought he was never really professional. This interview, casual or not doesn’t seem to me professional what so ever. He doesn’t know how many programmers he has working for him, he is crying about some dudes comments on a message board. Microsoft or Apple would have a reason to cry from the comments you read on this board sometimes, but at least they are professional and give the impression they are market leaders. I guess thats why they are up the food chain. I don’t think this way about Zeta at all just about Bernd. Once they grow, I think and hope Bernd won’t be the spokes person for this company.
And have the GNU fanatics port Linux and Gnome/KDE to the original BeBox? We have Kancept that has one just waiting to run it on his system!
Note: the porters will need to keep in mind that it has 32 Megs RAM. Can Gnome or KDE with Linux run in that configuration?
we at mellowtab are working on this
:Py
Linux was ported to the bebox when be still existed and still sold bebox !! NetBSD has also been ported. In those days no gnome nor KDE where available.

Hi Blixel, try http://www.yellowtab.com or download Phos (Zeta-like BeOS version) at http://beoseh.neo-programmers.net/forum/
or on http://www.bebits.com try to search for BeOS

I wonder why noone else responded here, they just seem preoccupied with Bernd… : /
For the screenshots; who ownes the Porche?
I actually enjoyed the video, it greatly improves my impression of yellowTab. They have my support.
And yes, I did buy the Release Candidate.
“I actually enjoyed the video, it greatly improves my impression of yellowTab. They have my support.

Same here…
would never pay to beta test anything. As a “tester” you’re providing a service to the company. For anyone to pay to provide a service seems ludicrious to me. Unless you get the final copy free, and the beta test price was _heavily_ discounted. I’m not sure yt has even settled on a pricing model yet, so who knows?
I’d also love to meet their mystery dev(s) working on Java.
So… MS’ VP dancing around on a stage like he’s drunk, is professional to you? You’re right, that showed that his dancing got them where they are, market leaders.
It was a good interview. I think the news sites should post news from the interview though and not just the interview as a lot of people won’t watch the whole thing or even part of it in some cases. There is a lot of good information in the video.
You crybabies that don’t like Bernd need to grow up. Probably the same people that still can’t get over Be’s infamous “focus shift”. Yellowtab is on a path this is proving to be doing good things for the BeOS community and Bernd is the driving force behind it. Mistakes have been made and will be made but from what I’ve seen the good far outweighs the bad and the community that loves BeOS reaps the benefits.
Zeta RC3 has been working very well for me. My old Dual P3 500 power supply and motherboard blew up and I pulled the hard drive out and put it in a P3 1000 box and booted it right up. No driver installing, no nothing. It has been running since I turned it on. It runs my Web server (Apache), email server (Communigate Pro), Battle.net server (PvPGN), Muscle server for BeShare chat and file sharing, along with Vision connected to a couple IRC networks and 5 chat channels 24/7. I compile programs and surf the web on this machine also and it has been pretty darn stable. R5.03 + BONE (beta) was pretty stable but I couldn’t upload huge amounts of stuff to it or it would crash. Those problems were fixed in Zeta RC3 and now I upload/download massive amounts of stuff all the time just fine. Thanks YellowTab!
[4/6 9:47] (3758) Zaranthos/P3_1000: BeOS System Uptime: 134 days, 20 hours, 41 minutes, 55 seconds
They also have my support with the fixed kernel and stuff. I know Zeta won’t be useful for me because there are no pro audio sequencers available for their OS (I’m a musician). But I’d like to support them and hopefully Steinberg will pick up the Nuendo port they were doing for BeOS and finish the damn thing
Why are some people always talking about “crybabies” and stuff like that? Can’t you see that some people are unsatisfied with what yellowTab has done so far? Is it really necessary to talk about “crybabies” instead of talking seriously?
For those who want to learn a bit more about how “professional” yellowTab’s and Mr. Bernd Korz’ business contacts are (sorry, it’s in German, use a translation service, if necessary):
http://yellowtab.de/phorum/phorum.php?read,331,114445
This is, at least in my opinion, neither satisfying nor “professional” and shows once again that yellowTab seems to be simply unable to organise a modern(!) office suite for Zeta. Very sad.
Mmmm, I think Bernd Kolz has every right to complain about what people said about him. It doesn’t make him a “crybaby” or “unprofessional”– it makes him human. As I have experienced many times myself, due to my articles and editorials: kids on the internet get an attitude. An attitude that would vanish like snow ‘for the sun if they would be in front of my face. But still, it simply doesn’t feel right when some 14yr old kid says all sorts of stuff about you.
I really enjoyed the interview and yT is on a roll here.
– they just moved offices to a huge building
– Zeta 1.0 is coming
– a zeta-only devcon is coming
– next year on cebit yt will have a 200m2 sized stand
– and they have a very cool ad-campaign
I don’t see any other alt. OS companies doing that good.
You are *also* talking about “14yr old kids” instead of talking seriously! Honestly, I believe that if people run out of ideas, they begin talking about “crybabies” and stories that nobody is interested in, so do you as well.
But continue like this if you wish. Call unsatisfied people “14yr old kids”, and you will get the feedback you deserve. Say that all people who are criticising yellowTab are “14yr old kids”, it does not matter because everybody knows that Zeta is obsolete anyway (Remember: We are talking about an OS that does not even allow multiple user accounts!).
YT and Bernd have made some tremendous fo pars over the years, but at the same time they have improved their relations and indeed worked hard to aid the community where they can.
Zeta isn’t perfect, not by a long chalk, but it has on the most part been improving steadily. But whenever they announce anything its “Oh its just this or that” dismissing it out of hand.
At the end of the day, YT have been going out there and trying to sell the BeOS to new users actively wherever and whenever they can, bringing new users and developers into the fold, whilst trying (And to be fair, sometimes failing) to help the current community.
Can any of you folks who are ardently anti YT (or indeed just anti Bernd) say that you have done as much as they have in real terms for this community? I somehow doubt it.
Now, I’ll go back to using my OS instead of listening to you guys bitch about community politics. Peace all.
“Why are some people always talking about “crybabies” and stuff like that? Can’t you see that some people are unsatisfied with what yellowTab has done so far? Is it really necessary to talk about “crybabies” instead of talking seriously?”
You’re unsatisfied that BeOS will be able to use over 1GB of RAM for the first time ever? You’re unsatisfied that more and more faithful BeOS developers are being paid to work on the OS they love so much? You’re unsatisfied that BeOS is getting exposure in professional venues like Cebit and others? You’re unsatisfied that an actual company is moving BeOS forward and getting more people to pay attention to the beloved little OS that was dying? Or did you just get your feelings hurt somewhere along the line and now all you can do it cry like a baby? (sorry couldn’t resist). yellowTAB is doing all this by the way and from the information in the video they are making money and able to pay their employees to work on Zeta. I’m sorry you’re so unhappy with this but I just don’t get it.
If you didn’t have a knee jerk reaction when you saw “crybabies” and actually read all of my post you would have seen that it was serious and there was far more seriousness than whining on my part.
