“The quarter’s revenue total includes $62.5 million made selling “non-core intellectual property rights” to Microsoft […] But it’s worrying when a company has to look at what else it can sell off to help up make what it has lost in the sales of its core products. Take away the Microsoft-sourced revenue, and SGI’s quarterly sales figure falls to $316.5 million – 27 per cent lower than the previous quarter” TheRegister reports on SGI‘s status. Our Take: Sell out may be one of the reasons why the interview we sent to the IRIX kernel team 2 months ago was never returned answered. The engineers were willing and responded immediately, but that was not the case for their marketing and PR departments which we had to go through and get their “ok”.
So, who did you ask to interview?
As an active contributor to the comp.sys.sgi.* newsgroups, and one of the members of the IRIX core kernel group, I never saw any such request. I would have gladly responded to interview questions, and would have personally worked hard to get the marketing department (not really very distinct from the PR department) to respond as well.
Talk of a sellout is quite frankly unsubstantiated. Being on the inside I can deifnitely attest to the visible relief on various executive’s faces as they shared with us the results of this quarter. Things are looking up around here, and the sense of having a future and pride in our company is more evident here this week than it has been in a long long time.

I’m sorry for coming off a bit steamed in that last message, BTW.
Check again please! I sent it about 10 minutes ago! :o)
Let me know if you can’t receive it for some reason, I can re-send it in an alternative email address.
Eugenia,
Sorry, I thought you meant check my old email because I overlooked something.
That could be entirely possible considering the volume I receive (this place
lives on email) — I’ve averaged about 120 messages/day this month as a
result.
I’ll try to respond to your private mail. I just wanted to make a note here
(in public) that my assumption you mailed me two months ago was wrong, and
that you’ve followed up in private.
Thank you, I’ll extract my foot from my mouth momentarily,
Brent Casavant
