Microsoft wants to deliver its Windows Server 2003 update, known as “R2,” in 2005. To make sure it will be able do so, the company is prioritizing its feature list and moving some R2 features into later releases. Elsewhere, Windows Server 2003 SP1 Build 1247 is now available for testers.

Microsoft is kind of like a politician .. they never seem to deliever what they promise. You would figure by now they would be a little more conservative with feature announcements, but it seems they never learn.
Exactly look at all the features Longhorn was SUPPOSE to have…..
Thats exactly what FUD is all about, they do it so well. Saying they’ll deliver something just to stop you buying from anyone else in the meantime.

Well, I wouldn’t call those people idiots.
How do you know what someone is going to do or not?
A lot of people still show some signs of trust, which is a good thing.
So what if some things get canceled or are not possible to do in the proposed timeframe? Better do less better than lots of crap.

So are you saying they intentionally overhype the features? Sorry, but that’s a conspiracy theory and I don’t buy it. If they did as you describe, why would they have announced already that Longhorn is going to be scaled down when it is still two years off the horizon? Seems to me that if they were going to pull the bait and switch move, they’d have waited much longer.
My theory is that they just get a little too ambitious and bite off more than they can chew.
Notice how they always say that. Microsoft is the king of vaporware.

If your on the verge of ditching MS in favor of a competitors product then you’ll find MS saying that the feature you want will come in it’s next version. MS did this for years when it came to Active Directory.
MS has always hyped up features for their next releases and often fell short. WinFS like features have been promised for many more years then most people realize. There is a value to tell customers that technologies are just around the corner, even if they really aren’t.

I understand what you’re saying, but as I said before, why would they do this and then retract that claim with more than 2 years until the next Windows release? You would think that if they were purposely trying to lead people on, they would’ve waited until at least 2006 to announce that WinFS wouldn’t make it.

The funny thing is once MS gets the word spread that the next Windows version really is going to be the BIG thing (Really. For once this time. I know, we lied to you when Win95, 98, 2000 and XP came, but this time we mean it.), somehow lots of people believe it.
All they remember afterwards is “MS’ next major system update is going to so supercool and ‘innovative'”.
If they later on hear about some features being left out many don’t care. They don’t even know which features were supposed to be in in the first place, all they know is they got the message it’s going to be awesome and that’s what sticks in their (apart from that FUD and marketing drool) pretty empty heads.
