PatchBurn is a tool to patch existing CD/DVD-drivers (under Mac-OS X 10.2.x) or to generate and install new device profiles (under Mac-OS 10.3.x and later). It allows many, otherwise unsupported burners to be used directly with Mac OS X, iTunes and DiscBurner. It has given life to my (otherwise unsupported) external SONY DVD-/+RW drive and so it comes recommended. PatchBurn is harmless, as all it does is create a new description profile for the drive so OSX knows how to deal with it.
I can already see the DMCAs a flying!
Sounds like a cool program I better get…
Burning with my external burner in iTunes like i should have been able to from the start… Thanks for pointing out this great app.
Notice that it’s v. 3.0. If apple hasn’t bothered them this far, I think they’re probably safe. Although stranger things have happened….
can this enable any pc dual layer disk burners? i’ve been wanting to get one for my powermac recently
“can this enable any pc dual layer disk burners? i’ve been wanting to get one for my powermac recently”
Nah, I think only Toast 6.0.7 can do this.
I can already see the DMCAs a flying!
And if by DMCA you mean the Digital Millenium Copyright Act, you’re wrong. As the .de is already suggesting, PatchBurn seems to be developed in Germany, which happens not to be part of the United States. This implies that US law is not applicable.
Even lawyers appear to have problems with recognising that US law is only valid in the US, not worldwide. For more (only slightly related) examples, visit http://static.thepiratebay.org/legal .
I don’t see any potential legal threat for this program.
Yes, this makes it possible for OS X to USE those drives, but it ode snot give the OS X disk utility the ability to burn a second layer on supported drives and media. right now, you need to use toast 6 to do that after you install this and the drive.
that is OK though because toast can import iDVD files.
BTW, does a dual layer burner allow for the drive to drive copying of DVD movies with out any modification? I would assume that the MPAA would have put counter measures in.
umm, the EU adopted a DMCA + Type legislation last year.
I’ve been using my NEC-2510A dual layer burner in a firewire/usb2 enclosure on my iBook for a while now. You shouldn’t have a problem running one.
Does this mean I can buy an external DVD drive and use it to burn my iDVD projects as if I had a SuperDrive in my iBook (933Mhz G4, 10.3.5, iLife ’04)? If so, what type of DVD drive should I get? From what I know the ‘+’ and ‘-‘ are format types, but I do not know more than that, but I do want to get one that is closest to the SuperDrive.
I find it strange that this is admittedly a beta software, and he has removed v2 from the site entirely. That being said, PatchBurn has been a great piece of software for a long time now, and I cant see v3 being any different. I’d probably not buy a new drive in anticipation that it “just works” until v3 is a little more time tested though.
so get one that supports that format.
I am wondering, the Pioneer 108 does dual layer disks. anyone here use that drive? how well does it work? any problems with it on OS X after PB is installed?I want a mid term future proof drive for my Gigabit Powermac G4 and Dual layer is the next thing for DVD devices other than High-Def which is overkill for Home videos anyway.
thanks.
Not only does US law not apply, I don’t even see how the DMCA would apply in the first place. This is just a patch to use unsupported burners with OS X. We’re using Patchburn at home on my fiance’s B&W G3 since I upgraded the stock DVD ROM drive to a TDK combo drive. Zero problems.
The DMCA relates to reverse-engineering copy protection methods. Not even remotely related to what’s happening here.
Seriously, how did DMCA even get mentioned here? Furthermore, if this is the way that someone who is (ostensibly) together and with it, how can we expect mom and pop average user to act? “DONT INSTALL THAT DRIVER!!!!! IT ISN’T SIGNED BY MICROSOFT/APPLE/ATI/etc.!!!!!”
FWIW, I have the pioneer 108, and it is a snazzy drive — much faster than the “Superdrive” I had before. I haven’t felt like paying for any dual layer disks or Toast yet, so all I can comment on is single layer. One thing I notice is that it takes a reaaaaaaaly long time to mount disks though, both DVDs and CDS. I’m talking 30-45 seconds. This is kind of annoying.
