Lycoris, today announced that it has commenced shipping Desktop/LX 1.4 to customers after a brief delay in the original release schedule. It is available in Personal, Deluxe and PowerPak editions.

..FOUR week delay for those of use who can count. It is still not shipping though.
And the product still will use 2.4 as kernel, and according to the lycoris forum it seems there are a lot of bugs and hardware that aren’t supported because they haven’t had the time to include drivers… that is probably also the reason Lycoris 1.4 doesn’t come with kernel 2.6 – the lycoris crew is so small (4 people?), that they haven’t been able to do the move.
If Lycoris is to succeed with the current business strategy they probably need a lot of investment cash to hire more people.

You’d think we were all using BSD, Mac or windows until kernel 2.6 came out, because now we seem to think it evil to include kernel 2.4 in a distro.
2.6 still has some issues, obnoxious ones. Never with 2.4 did my music crack, with 2.6 it does during updatedb and gtk2 theme changes. And I have had the same report from other people.

Wow – they found some bugs that precluded release and you people pick on them? Mandrake had a release that blew up hard drives. I’d rather take the company who continues to test their products and keeps fixing bugs.
2.6 kernel isn’t the most stable. Xandros still has 2.4 kernel, why don’t you yell about that?
The poster who wrote about music cracking and theme change issues got it right. Kudos to Lycoris for getting a release out that works better, and keeping the public informed. If you check their forums, there were a lot of announcements about this.
And go look at the latest distrowatch weekly. They tell about how Mandrake and Fedora are way behind schedule too! Give it a rest and see what it’s about.
I haven’t ever before seen a distro that claims to be shipping on the set date, while in fact they haven’t even finished the product. also they took pre-orders with the promises of delivering on aug 16.
about xandros having the 2.4 kernel too… well latest major xandros release was last year so I think they have a better excuse. still it would have been nice if their very minor 2.5 upgrade had included the 2.6 kernel, but it didn’t…
well at least linspire will ship really new technology with it’s 5.0 release due ~november. (kernel 2.6, reiser4, kde 3.3 and a bunch of other new stuff including complete gfx remake by everaldo)

Man – the 2.4 kernel is stable – 2.6 is buggy. So Xandros does 2.5 and that’s a MINOR release? Oh yeah – forgot that the linspire folks only do mostly whole point releases. Even though lindows 4.5 was a major point release from lindows – Xandros 2.5 was a minor point release?
KDE 3.3 is the buggiest KDE release according to Slack, Knoppix and Distrowatch. Read last week’s Distrowatch weekly for more info on that. Glad to see linspire is taking the lead. Kernel that cracks music and the buggiest gui ever.
Tell me something that linspire is doing that is WAY above the others – none of that other stuff hasn’t been done already.

They say they are using a different font rendering engine. I would like to see the results.

* Developing FOSS applications instead of proprietary ones.
* Indeed, providing newer and more software.
Lycoris does nothing of this. Yeah, AI^2, which ain’t that impressive nor FOSS. RedHat is all FOSS, SUSE is all FOSS, SGI IBM and Novell are all contributing back. Heck, even e.g. Progeny does. I don’t see how Lycoris does although they’re also a much smaller company than the other ones named.
I’m fairly critical of Lycoris at times, and their communication to customers was atrocious (on par with past Lycoris debacles, I might add), but for all the problems it’s great to see that they actually took the time to fix their software instead of just releasing it anyway.
wrt the 2.6/2.4 kernel issue, 2.6 is very unstable now, and driver support isn’t as robust as 2.4. The problem with 2.4 is that laptop support sucks, so it will be interesting to see what Lycoris do with their Tablet OS.
As for sponsorship, I doubt that Lycoris has ever made a profit – I could be wrong, but excepting some new sales people they’ve never actually hired anybody that I’m aware of, which suggest that they can’t afford staff, let alone sponsorship.

Not from me. Im not saying that your not having that problem, but the only time I had that happen to me was under the 2.4 kernels. Under 2.6 though, I can have a compile going, a browser open in Gnome, music playing, and then run updatedb and my music remains smooth as silk (just tried it now). Under 2.4 the compile alone would have resulted in sketchy music playback.
You sure its not somthing else?
I had the same problem with the 2.6 kernel, the first release worked great, 2.6.5 had that problem of music skipping and crazy momentary pauses, I just upgraded to 2.6.8.1 and BAM the problem has been fixed, and in a week or so, i haven’t had a single problem with the kernel.
