I must say, I was excited to hear about KDE3.3, and yet I see that 1/3 of the first 15 posts are garbage…I thought this site was moderated….
In any case, I am kind of bummed 3.3 is coming out…I just tried 3 distros with 3.2 and none of them recognized my zip drie, so I had to rever to my old SuSe 8.2 with 3.1…:though with liquid and some other goodies from kdelook.org, it looks pretty tasty, I have yet to play with 3.2…
In either case, Matthias and co just keep on churning out quality. I read the interview with him, and it was nice to see someone as worried about I am about the whole java/mono thing..especially project leader on my favorite desktop environment…Man, his interviews are always a joy to read…
Related and yet not related to 3.3, what do you all think is going to happen with .NET/Mono/Java and how will KDE be affected/affect the outcome? I am excited to see the race between FOSS and closed-source heating up…
I am really looking forward to test driving KDE when it comes out. I’d install the beta if I knew of an easy way to do it on my Gentoo system without breaking portage. I got burnt by playing with Break My Gentoo once, lol, I won’t do it again.
When it does come out I immerse myself in the new release, putting it through its paces, taking another one week break away from my GNOME desktop. Hopefully I will have time to do a new writeup on what I like and do not like, similar to what I did for KDE 3.2.
I really hope I see (within the next few KDE releases):
1.) Some UI simplification… reduction of clutter, streamlining, just one text editor chosen (not three), taming of the Control Center, etc.
2.) Saner defaults (buh-bye Keramik!) so I don’t have to spend as much time tweaking to get a usable desktop.
There is a lot to like about KDE so I am really excited to see what direction this project will take in the next few releases. My KDE 3.2 desktop actually looks pretty nice these days, even though I do spend most of my time in GNOME.
I agree that the off-topic posts and trolling are getting to be a bit excessive and silly on this site. Really, if you don’t like Linux or KDE or GNOME, why troll for responses from the enthusiasts who come here to read stories relating to these projects? What is there to prove? That Windows is a “better” OS? Maybe for some people it is, but variety is a good thing, as is maturity and tolerance.
It works great. One command and it compiles you a nice fresh KDE beta that gets installed in your home directory. You can optionally tell it to use a different directory for its settings so as not to interfere with your 3.2 installation.
And yeah.. what’s up with all the retards on this site now? Perhaps we need logins and permanent banning.
A new release of a major desktop is a good new, currently all desktops are improving quite nicely ( and painfully too ). That’s said, none of them are already on the level of the ten years old W95, not to speak of Apple 80’s, and i will spare you the Palo Alto Rank Xerox Lab, 45 years delayed is somewhat hard to sustain. Hard to sustain, but somebody may find usefull lessons of modesty, reading the resumes of those works… Anyway, improvement is good.
I never knew Win95 had virtual desktops, antialiased fonts, thumbnails, a graphical compression/decompression utility, svg support, a text editor worth a damn, and so on and so forth. Inform me when you get back to this planet.
The main question seeing all those improvements, a better word than corrections, is : what is Linux ?
Did that make any sense? Really now. To tell you the truth the rest of your post made no sense at all either. All I managed to glean from it was that you had problems with Fedora and blamed it on Gnome.
When it does come out I immerse myself in the new release, putting it through its paces, taking another one week break away from my GNOME desktop. Hopefully I will have time to do a new writeup on what I like and do not like, similar to what I did for KDE 3.2.
Always nice to see regular users of another DE check out what else there is. Though you probably won’t becoe a KDE users anytime soon – but that’s ok
Both DEs are taking slightly different approaches to ease user interaction these days.
I really hope I see (within the next few KDE releases):
1.) Some UI simplification… reduction of clutter, streamlining, just one text editor chosen (not three), taming of the Control Center, etc.
Thats a point that often gets raised before a release. But I doubt the polish that has been done to the UI in 3.3 would satisfy those who want simplification.
It’s a rather controversial issue – many KDE users and developers think GNOME has gone too far regarding simplification and don’t want to take that route (really not meant as a flame).
others, like myself are concerned about loosing too much functionality, that makes KDE so great.
One exampkle are the context menus – there are elements that could be removed. For example those that are in the toolbars (back, forward and so on) – but there are times I’m glad they are available i the context menus.
Others even suggest removing those fundamental items from the toolbars… (really not my idea of an improvement).
Yet I think there are elements on the toolbars like copy, paste, cut, print that could be removed (by default – they are customizable) because those are available via “File ->” or “Edit ->”… it’s all a matter of taste I think and of how you use your Desktop.
The context menus for example could be simplified by default (no back, forward, up) without loosing the extra functionality like the “Action” Menu or stuff like that…
2.) Saner defaults (buh-bye Keramik!) so I don’t have to spend as much time tweaking to get a usable desktop.
Agreed. Most people seem to agree that _the_ alternative would be Plastik (yeah not everyone _loves_ it but it should be ok as a default), and so it seems the developers do as well.
But there doesn’t seem the slightest chances of having the default changed for 3.3 – they don’t want to change with a .x Release.
Documentation (Screenshots) is an important point in such a decision and even though users suggested helping out in quickly updating the screenshots it doesn seem to much of a challenge for such a release.
I agree that the off-topic posts and trolling are getting to be a bit excessive and silly on this site. Really, if you don’t like Linux or KDE or GNOME, why troll for responses from the enthusiasts who come here to read stories relating to these projects? What is there to prove? This thread shows the most “report pending” messages I’ve seen in quite some time – used to be a bit more productive in here.
t’s a rather controversial issue – many KDE users and developers think GNOME has gone too far regarding simplification and don’t want to take that route (really not meant as a flame).
That is a valid point. I know some Linux desktop users don’t like the GNOME approach. This is why I want to smack people upside the head when they tell me that having more than one desktop environment on Linux is bad. It isn’t bad. Users have different priorities, tastes, and preferences. One size fits all just means that you don’t please anyone.
I personally think there is some fat that can be trimmed in KDE without losing functionality, but I can see where others would disagree. I would say that SuSE’s work in tidying up KDE for SuSE 9.1 is a good example. Perhaps the KDE defaults could resemble that more closely?
Agreed. Most people seem to agree that _the_ alternative would be Plastik
Yeah, I figured as much. I happen to really like Plastik to such a great extent that I even use the Plastik window decorations on my GNOME dekstop.
BTW, the Nuvola SVG icon theme in my opinion really makes KDE look a lot nicer. in fact, my KDE desktop is looking quite sweet these days.
One question actually for KDE gurus out there. Whenever I try to run KDE in VNC, the fonts end up changing to a much smaller size which is a bummer, even with the -geometry set to 1280×1024. I am not having this problem with GNOME 2.6 on the same box.
Sometimes I feel like playing with KDE when I am away from my home system, but this really makes things difficult. Anyone else have this problem and know how to rectify it?
I’ve been running 3.3beta2 for a week or so and there’s lots of good stuff. My favourites are:
the ‘Simple Browser’ mode in Konqueror – now as simple to use as Firefox, shame it isn’t the default profile.
More updates to khtml that bring it close to parity with Gecko in most areas, and beyond it in others. Haven’t yet had to fire up a Gecko browser, whereas with 3.2.3 I had to do this once or twice a week for the odd site that was mangled in khtml. Haven’t yet crashed Konqueror either, not bad for a second beta and rather better than my experiences with Firefox 0.9.
integration of spamassassin and anti-virus tools with KMail
Kontact is finally reasonably stable and can be used as intended (in 3.2 it had most of the useful groupware functionality disabled as it was too buggy)
Big improvements in Kopete’s stability
Tweaks to opaque resizing of windows that make it look and feel much slicker (though you need a patched Qt as well for this to work)
A new decoder library (akode) for compressed audio that doesn’t suck like the existing mpeglib
New system sounds that actually sound rather good
A new all-encompassing theme installer and manager.
Small but significant usability tweaks all over the place – those of you who want options to be gutted a la Gnome 2 will be disappointed however
All in all KDE 3.3 is shaping up to a be a very nice release – however it’s not an enormous change from 3.2, just a lot of tweaks and fixes that make it more pleasant.
– defaults “feel” better than in 3.2. Can now pick plastik in kpersonalizer. Plastik + the black and white scheme rocks. The ONLY tweaking I had to do was choose plastik, change the color scheme, and remove the background image for kicker, which looks better in keramik than plastik. I had to do a lot more tweaking in kde 3.2 for a nice desktop.
– the toolbar seperators in konq are appreciated.. a few more buttons could go however still.
– konqueror now has a google search field like firefox.. good
– konqueror seems to render a bit better
– the simple browser profile in konqueror is very nice (the current web browsing should probably be moved to advanced web browsing and simple browser moved to web browsing)
– the pager applet has a completely new look, a lot flatter now– looks much nicer
– kcontrol is same (it is supposed to be rewritten in kde4)
– the new theme manager is nice, although I wish they had hid the old panels that it wraps around
– the new sounds are great
– can finally set font hinting (yay!)
what’d be great in kde 4.0:
– a revamped kcontrol that was easier to use (look, uh, at the crypto panel.. can *anyone* use that?)
I am not sure if this will solve your problem but it is worth trying once.
Try the following in your vncserver.
xdpyinfo | grep “dots per inch”
if this says anything other than 96×96, do the following:
When you launch vncserver pass the argument –dpi 96 to it. This will make sure that the X windows DPI is 96. Font rendering is very sensitive to the DPI setting in general.
But since my religion forbids me from compiling, I’ll have to wait until Mandrake 10.1 or SuSE 10.0 (9.2 ?) to use it, but I’m really looking forward, especially to SuSE since Mandrake Community Edition is … a lot like Fedora o.O
Anyone knows if the next SuSE will be 10.0 or 9.2 and if will include any of those Novell Desktop things?
Just a Windows in a lot of cases was blamed for crashes caused by bad drivers I think Konqueror in some cases is getting the rap for crashes caused by bad html.
No. A browser should, in an ideal world, never crash due to malformed html. It’s acceptable for a browser to render the page incorrectly if the html is broken, but crashing is a big no-no.
Of course, we live in an imperfect world, and every browser crashes sometimes, whether it be Konqueror, Mozilla, Firefox, Safari, IE or whatever. Konqueror used to be rather crash-prone, but since 3.2 it has got a lot better, and my experience of 3.3beta2 is that it’s now very stable indeed – as I said, better than Firefox, which, at least on Windows (which is where I mostly use it – in Linux I almost always use Konq) seems to crash fairly regularly, mostly due to memory leaks I think as the memory usage balloons before it crashes.
In any case, my original comment didn’t say that Konqueror 3.2.3 crashed once or twice a week for me, simply that about once or twice a week I came across a site that was ‘mangled’ – that is, it didn’t render correctly. In KDE 3.3beta2 I’ve yet to find a site that rendered poorly enough that I had to use another browser to view it.
I personally have found Konqueror to be vastly improved in the last few releases, it renders most things really well nowadays. I suspect that Safari may have something to do with this.
Heck, Konqueror is the only Linux browser that I have used that works fully with the remote web Exchange client we use at work.
I still use Firefox mostly, but when I fire up KDE, I have no problems using Konqueror either.
Just a Windows in a lot of cases was blamed for crashes caused by bad drivers I think Konqueror in some cases is getting the rap for crashes caused by bad html.
That’s a silly line of reasoning. Drivers are executable code with direct access to the hardware, and therefore a buggy driver can crash the whole system.
HTML on the other hand is an interpreted page description language with no access to anything much. In the worst case, bad HTML should result in a badly displaying page. If it manages to crash the browser, that’s a bug in the browser.
Depending on the feedback from this Technology Preview, we will provide a second Preview in Q3 2004, enter the beta phase in Q4 2004 and release the final Qt 4 in late Q1 2005.”
Basically, when Qt4 is released, it will start getting used in cvs head I guess. And some time later, KDE 4.0 will be released.
And I guess that’s still about 1 to 1.5 years away.
Will there be a KDE 3.4 still based on Qt3 before that? A release with simpler and better defaults would be very welcome and shouldn’t take longer to put together than the commendably quick 3.3.
Otherwise that leaves quite a hole in the schedule for others to exploit, especially when considering that the Qt4 release might well be delayed beyond what is currently planned.
There are at least 3 QTCurve versions / revisions. Those are included in the packages I have on my machine and I _think_ the third one is the one in the knetworkconf screenshot.
If you are really that interested I’ll have a look when I get home.
Does anybody know if kmail in kde 3.3 has some improved functionallity regarding handeling of spam on imap accounts.
I’m thinking of something similar to what mozilla thunderbird is capable of, automatic bayesian filtering (or whatever it is called). This is what keeps me from using kmail at the moment.
Kmail has been able to to this (or through other means) with POP account but I’ve at least have failed to find a suitable solution for imap. Does anybody know?
“Will there be a KDE 3.4 still based on Qt3 before that?”
No. AFAIK KDE3.3 is the last major release in the 3.x-series. Of course we will have 3.3.1 and the like, but the next major release will be KDE4. And it’s not THAT far away. KDE-developers will be working on KDE4 and Qt4 even before Qt4 is officially released. I would guess that KDE4 will appear few months after the release of Qt4. And I think it’s going to KICK ASS!
> “Will there be a KDE 3.4 still based on Qt3 before that?”
I’d consider that highly likely for various reasons. But the final decision whether the next version will be KDE 3.4 or 4.0 will be made during aKademy.
Since you are using MEPIS (good choice) it’s easy to get – http://www.kalyxo.org had Packages for it.
It’s a really good choice if you like it – there is a 100% matching GTK theme as well, so all your apps should look about the same…
The packages include a style that has three versions to choose from. And you can mix and match most elements from the style to suit your. To achieve a result like in the screenshots you’d actually _have_ to do that.
Basically its “version 3” -> “custom” -> “V style arrows” and “no rounded
buttons, etc”.
To have a similar colour shouldn’t be too diffucult – some of the kde defaults
quite match it – but I find it more useable with a simple grey.
Is there any chance of getting FreeNX / Knx Client into any upcoming versions of KDE 3.3? If so, KDE will be an extremely impressive out-of-the-box setup for remote access.
This problems deserve more and more attention, since, The Browser is a fundamental tool and it is always painfull if you have to keep I.E. around just for one or 2 stupid websites that you really need …
OK, I know that this is the fault of the webdesigners, but I do need acces to my ABN/AMRO REAL bank account at: http://www.bancoreal.com.br , and they really don’t care enough to support my choices.
Any way RC1 seems to be pretty stable and konqueror feels much more responsive than in kde 3.2.3 and also in kde 3.3 beta1 and beta2.
There are still some javascript issues and minor rendering issues.
good news: konqueror is getting better and better, there are not many reasons left for not using it. It is light, fast and good.
Faster response time, always good. Nice development tools like kdevelop, Umbrello, Kompare, Cervisia are better.
Eye candy like the new OpenGL screen savers. I hope the programmers doing those cool stuff can add some opengl stuff in the coming KDE 4.
bad news: still lots of clutter in kde-apps like kopete, konqueror and kontact. Please KDE-developers… follow this simple fact “less is more”! Instead of all these colors and many icons as default, use more streamlined style like default gnome.
I wonder if they will include that gtk theme program in it. The one that emulates your KDE theme for your gtk apps.
That’d be cool if they did . Even if it is fairly slowish and unstable.
Slowish … maybe
Unstable, hmmm what’s the point? Either way you can release a “stable release with unstable portions (unless already you document unstabilities)
It is runing very well but there are still three big bugs that I experience with it.
1. I just can’t get the fullscreened apps to return back to normal from fullscreen mode.
2. KOrganizer crashes right when I start it
3. KDE lockups my computer when I try to play notification sound very quickly.
KDE 3.2.3 doesn’t have any of these three bugs on the same machine.
Then why don’t you file a bugreport
It’s not hard, just go to http://bugs.kde.org and I’m sure you’ll handle it!

Try installing KDE using Konstruct.
http://developer.kde.org/build/konstruct/

“Also one has to try hard to find anything that is available/possible under linux but not under FreeBSD.”
Try Macromedia Servers…
KDE 3.3 includes KPim 3.3 and it should have been vastly improved.
Was anyone able to sync data from Kontact to a mobile phone or PDA with kitchensync?
Does this version of Konqueror contain more stuff from Safari?

Yes, see http://lists.kde.org/?l=kde-cvs&s=safari and http://lists.kde.org/?l=kde-cvs&s=webcore
KDE will never introduce a Gtk dependency – not for this reason and not for others.
Discovered showstoppers which will lead to a quick next release candidate.

I’ll be trying RC1 later today and will try to report as you did. Just hope it doesn’t get lost in the noise…
My thoughts:
– use the simple profile as default in konqueror
Hi Chris,
I am not sure if this will solve your problem but it is worth trying once.
Osho
Hey Anonymous!
That fixed the problem! Thank you VERY much 🙂
KDE is now rendering the fonts normally under VNC, so now I can play with it more when I am at work. Jolly good!
Some fresh KDE 3.3 (CVS) Screenshots can be found here:

I’m really looking forward to KDE 3.3!
Mandrake 10.1 will only include KDE 3.2.3. SUSE 9.2 will be next.
heh, good subject. anyway…
Plugins are another matter.
Since this is a KDE thread, I would like to ask about what theme is this on this screenshot:
http://knetworkconf.sourceforge.net/Screenshots/0.6/devicesBasicSet…
Yes, that is KDE, not Gnome and I cannot find that theme anywhere. I hope someone can help me out here.
Thanks..
The Windeco is KDE Classic (KDE2) and the Style seems to be QTCurve version3. Kalyxo.org hosts debian packages of it.

“Does anyone know if the next KDE release cycle be based on QT 4 (thus towards KDE 4.0) ?”
I’m not a KDE developer, but from what I’ve read:
From KDE 4.0, it will use Qt4.
Basically, when Qt4 is released, it will start getting used in cvs head I guess. And some time later, KDE 4.0 will be released.
And I guess that’s still about 1 to 1.5 years away.
Reason: A quote from: http://doc.trolltech.com/4.0/tech-preview.html
“Roadmap
Depending on the feedback from this Technology Preview, we will provide a second Preview in Q3 2004, enter the beta phase in Q4 2004 and release the final Qt 4 in late Q1 2005.”
Cris, thanks for a quick answer but http://kde-look.org/content/preview.php?preview=3&id=5065&file1=506… and http://knetworkconf.sourceforge.net/Screenshots/0.6/devicesBasicSet… look rather different. Just check out the triangles on drop down menus. Or am I false? It would be nice you you gave me a tip about the color scheme used on my link.
Thanks

I have absolutely no idea.
I think maybe these things will be discussed at Akademy: http://conference2004.kde.org/
Hi there,
Does anybody know if kmail in kde 3.3 has some improved functionallity regarding handeling of spam on imap accounts.

Are you sure? For real?
If so there will be no Mandrake 10.1 in my box!
Since this is a KDE thread, I would like to ask about what theme is this on this screenshot:
http://knetworkconf.sourceforge.net/Screenshots/0.6/devicesBasicSet…..
I think it’s the Mandrake-theme! Don’t remember the name.
I’ve just checked and its definitely QTCurve.
Hope you have fun with it =)
You don’t have to wait till Suse 9.2 or 10.0 or whatever. All KDE 3.3 Beta and RC have Suse 9.1 rpms.
I don’t think KDE RC1 is officially announced at http://www.kde.org yet. But, when Beta1 and Beta2 were announced there were binary rpms for Suse 9.1.
Osho
> I don’t think KDE RC1 is officially announced at http://www.kde.org yet.
It will never be.
> But, when Beta1 and Beta2 were announced there were binary rpms for Suse 9.1.
There will be very likely no binaries for the release candidates.
Is there any chance of getting FreeNX / Knx Client into any upcoming versions of KDE 3.3? If so, KDE will be an extremely impressive out-of-the-box setup for remote access.
No, the KDE 3.3 series is feature frozen. Where is the problem for you/r distributor to bundle it with KDE 3.3 once available?
I use Konqueror quite often, and the page rendering works fine on most sites.
But, try: http://www.computerworld.com/
This problems deserve more and more attention, since, The Browser is a fundamental tool and it is always painfull if you have to keep I.E. around just for one or 2 stupid websites that you really need …
OK, I know that this is the fault of the webdesigners, but I do need acces to my ABN/AMRO REAL bank account at: http://www.bancoreal.com.br , and they really don’t care enough to support my choices.
Just saw that KDE 3.3 RC2 appeared on ftp://ftp.kde.org/pub/kde/unstable

I just installed RC1 when i saw that RC2 is out.
“use more streamlined style like default gnome.”
Indeed, just not as butt ugly as default Gnome icons.
