Along with our XML or PHP news feeds, OSNews is now offering WAP support for the readers that own a WAP-enabled mobile phone. Just point your WAP device on http://wap.osnews.com/ or on http://wap.osnews.com/index.wml and you should be able to access our 15 latest headlines. Please report any problems you may find on our comments section. Additionally, people with 4th generation mobile phones (mostly sold in Japan) capable of HTML should be able to render OSNews in full HTML, but in a more simple manner (no ads or nested tables). Just follow the same instructions as we have for the AvantGo, Lynx, Links and W3M browsers. Check the screenshot showing some WAP emulators and the three major text browsers rendering the alternative (and simpler) OSNews pages. UPDATE: I did some changes on the WAP source, please let us know if it now works ok with your devices. Thanks!
Yippee!!!

Kewl! Nice job!
You have a screenshot of an R380 emulator displaying your wap site but I have the real thing and all it’s telling me is it’s getting HTML and I tried both addresses. Mozilla however displays the WML fine.
I could eventually get wap.osnews.com to appear by “borrowing” Googles excellent wml converter which I sometimes use to read the HTML only BBC news PDA pages.
If you have a script detecting the browser I suspect it may not like my browser version it’s a late model R380 (anyone with an R380 should get the software updated as it’s faster and doubles the battery time!).
Having spent a year working on WAP I can tell you it’s a nightmare! Very few phones apply the WAP spec properly then and different gateways compile the WML differently (all WML goes via a gateway). Then of course the emulators do not always emulate the phones very well and to make things worse may not use WAP gateways at all , though things were improving – you used to get phones which would crash and could only be revived by removing the battery… Nokias usually (Ericssons are/were ugly but better engineered).
The only sure way to test is on the real things on different gateways etc… Good luck to you!
Kevin Spacey?
Kevin Spacey?
You’re right. Donald Sutherland is totally hotter.
Now if you would just rid your site of those annoying pop-up windows OSNews would be perfect.
not working on my Ericsson T68 ;-(
Too bad with the pop-up ads. Destroys an otherwise very good site.
Well, I agree. But pop-ups help pay for the site. I’d rather see sponsored reviews, than popup ads. They could be: Educating, Enlightening, or just plain boring, and i could skip over them. Less annoying than popups. But Bills have to be paid somehow. And i doubt any of you would like to donate money, to help keep the site ad-free. I could be wrong though.
wap works on opera…
wap works on opera… how cool is that?
which girl does JBQ have in his background?
or is that Kevin Spacey too?
Great idea! Doesn’t seem to be working on my T65, though. Says the page is invalid.
My T68 is properly set up for wap, but gives an error message that’s there’s something wrong with the site.

I’m a Newton user. One of the many awesome things it can do is schedule downloads of pages I’d like to read throughout the day, on the bus for instance. While the Newt can download full featured pages, and have no big troubles viewing them, it’d be nice to have something more simple. On many sites, it seems either you get the entire burrito, or you just a little WAPish listing of headlines.
It would be very nice if there was something in between, a plain-ish real HTML page that had the content of the front page- with the summary, &c, and a link to the comments/rest of story- but without all the graphics, and table-heavyness.
Or hell, even http://www.osnews.com/files/recent as an HTML file would work, as Newt’s Cape (the Newton browser I use) can follow links to a certain depth.
Just some ideas…
RevAron, sounds *almost* like links (not lynx) in Unix/Linux … it’s a text browser that doesn’t choke too badly on tables and frames. Wonder if it’s possible to get something like that for the Newton?
I get an error on my Samsung N200 (Using Sprint’s Wireless Web) that says Internal Server Error and if I go to Details it says “Site is Returning Bad Data”
Please retry with your WAP devices. I have made some changes on the WAP source, please let me know if it ok now.
Thanks!
>popup ads
Please do not lose your patience with them. We switched to DoubleClick ad broker (who feature some popup ads) JUST YESTERDAY. We ALREADY have asked them to DISABLE the popup ads on OSNews. We are waiting for them to do so for our account. Patience…
>which girl does JBQ have in his background? or is that Kevin Spacey too?
It is the (ugly-ish but sexy) Kevin Spacey too. We are sharing this PC (but I am using it much more than JBQ), until we get Cable modem in our new apartment.
cool it works on my Siemens M35i.
Im calling from Spain, Telefonica Mobile.
Not too slow
Dave- there’s nothing like links for the Newton, other than using a telnet emulator and using links running on a unix machine. But that’s not the issue- Newt’s Cape deals with all of the markup fine, it is just messy for a small screen. There is another browser called LunaRanger that renders them like Netscape 4.76 would on a desktop, but again, there’s too much scrolling involved. I just want something simple to look at, and fast when I’m grabbing it over a modem.
Works fine on my R380 now ๐
But Mozilla can’t read it anymore…
Looks like you’ve changed the mime type and thats fixed it – very common problem.
Did you changed the WML? if so you probably didn’t need to.
>But Mozilla can’t read it anymore…
Opera 6 still can. You can even go like this on Opera:
