Xandros today announced that the Xandros Desktop operating system serves as the core framework for the new line of ION laptops from Element Computer. Element customized the Xandros Desktop OS with their ION Parchment icon theme, the new Mozilla Firefox browser, and “Unbreakable Upgrade” support to bring an Apple-like customer experience and Windows compatibility to mobile Linux computing.
“After testing, trying, and working with the top Linux products, it became clear that the only way to give our customers the Apple-like
experience we required was to base ION on the Xandros Desktop OS framework,” stated Mike Hjorleiffsson, President of Element Computer.
“Xandros is unique when it comes to network integration and usability features that support Element Computer’s ‘No Windows Policy’.”
“We are delighted to team up with Element Computer to serve as the foundation for their mobile computer solutions,” said Dr. Frederick H.
Berenstein, Xandros Chairman and CTO. “The new ION laptops will become the standard by which others are judged.”
Xandros provides a complete spectrum of innovative Linux desktop solutions for everyone from home and small business users, all the way
up to major enterprise deployments. Xandros products are distinguished by their strong user focus, elegant graphical interfaces, best-of-breed applications, and robust integration with Microsoft Windows and other legacy solutions

This sounds interesting. You can’t say they’re not trying.
there is no link, and I can’t seem to find anything about it on the element web page….

we had a message about ION some weeks ago here – everybody who discovered the image below and knew about Xandros recognised it as Xandros File Manger…

So yes they do have a nice base – but Xandros isn’t known for having an outstanding support for Laptops…
Indeed the combination of Kernel 2.4.24, KDE3.1.4 and the quite slow startign XFM (even konqueror on KDE 3.1.4 is faster! on startup-time), no support for centrino-stuff doesn’t look like an ideal base for a laptop device…
And the “unbreakable update-stuff” – well xandros doesn’t release may updates – and even these updates arent perfect ๐ (the last one caused only roots beeing able to use a scanner
Why rebrand Xandros? Why not just use Xandros as Xandros??
I see the lamers are already out and attacking. Xandros works fine on laptops. I recently purchased a system from Retrobox.com. Its a Dell Latitude. Everything, with the one exception of the cheesy WinModem, works perfectly. The system is a 1 ghz, 256mb 20gb with sound and cd and builtin ethernet. All works fine and speed is great. I also use a Cisco Aironet 350 wireless card with zero problems.
Good to see them moving into pre-looaded laptops.
this is no xandors bashing – actually i sit in front of a xandros box ๐ BUT there’re IMO better distributions as base for a latop! as stated above, no kernel 2.6, no laptopkernel!, do not even dare to think on hiblbernation (!),no kwifi, no centrino-wlan (neither the binary one nor the oss-version) and so on….
and elementcomputer does sell those devices! have they tweaked xandros in all these ways? does THEY provide all updates?
xandros is quite a nice distribution in its core… but not really for a mobile device!
Isn’t this the same company where the president came and defended himself when people were complaining about the number of support incidents, the fact that it looked like Xandros (apparently it WAS Xandros), that it might be Lindows, etc.?
As I commented on in previous stories about Element, they have a big hole there. Wheres the standard desktops?? That all-in-one is just not going to cut it for most linux users. Even Apple, inventer and still king of the all-in-one, offers high end systems based on a more traditional form factor (G5s).
These guys can’t possibly hope to find success without a standard desktop system.
They know what hardware they support. I think laptops are easier than desktops because few people upgrade laptops third party, if at all. Desktops are harder because the customer can go buy a graphics card at the next computer shop and so on and it won’t work because they do not have drivers. Think Mac advtantage but using Linux instead. Not that I am a Xandros supporter though, I use Fedora.
Xandros is trapped by its closed source components and they are lagging behind the main supported desktop distros. Element should have gone for Suse or Mandrake and customise that.
I am curious to see how upgrades will be handled.
