BlueEyedOS reports that after a few weeks of hard work, compilation and linking of OpenTracker is now complete, and seems almost ready to make it work properly. In the meantime, OpenBeOS gets some ethernet drivers and the ability to run BeOS-native command line apps.

Its nice to see BlueEyedOS show signs of life – most observers thought that it was yet-another extinguished project. OpenTracker and OpenBeFileSystem on Linux sounds interesting, but what would really be amazing is the AppServer/InputServer running together with X11 and the previously mentioned components. That would raise quite a few eyebrowes, and some of it may spill over to OpenBeOS proper. Great work everyone.
PS – well done Marcus on the Gigabit ethernet drivers (and Nathan). You’re a star in the OBOS world. Even though I’m not German, I must admit that they produce excellent engineers. Just look at their cars…
when i get GB ethernet, i’ll be sending Marcus some cash. I’ve noticed lots of good programming has been coming out of Germany of late. Far Cry which is being dubbed the best FPS ever was german and Sacred is just an incredible game.

I’m frankly stunned. I really didn’t think the B.E.O.S was going to head anywhere. It almost seemed like more work than OpenBeOS and at the end seems to offer less.
But the BeOS kits and API’s are pretty nice. If Guillaume gets somewhere it’ll be interesting to see how BeOS and NeXTSTEP have traded places, with NS becoming a standalone platform and BeOS becoming the crossplatform OO framework.

consider that they are working TOGETHER. That might be a descent reason aye? you could think of it in a year or 2 as OBOS is primary choice if HW is supported and otherwise you go with the Linux kernel choice (a less good one IMO)….

While I can see this as only excellent news, I couldn’t help but be surprised that there needs to be ay porting effort at all: OpenBeOS is supposed to be binary compatible with BeOS 5.0. This implies that all the drivers existing for BeOS 5.0 should work on OpenBeOS, too, right?
Please, someone shed some light on this?

OK, if that’s the case, is it still true that:
1) You can use existing BeOS 5.0 ethernet drivers with OpenBeOS?
2) These new OpeBeOS drivers can be used with BeOS 5.0?
Yes, OpenBeOS is aiming to be binary compatable with BeOS, so drivers should be able to run on both systems. However, if there is to be a distribution of OpenBeOS they can’t ship drivers developed by Be, Inc. in it without running into legal problems. All those drivers need to be recreated in order to have an actual release.

I’m not a particular fan of the basis for this project.
I wish them the best of luck, but I’d rather see everyone concentrating on OpenBeOS, and having that project fly.
What always kills me about Open Source Projects to “Clone” another OS. Is they never do it.
They start redesigning it, and sacrifice compatibility or functionality because they think they can improve it.
I don’t mind improvements, but I always feel like those ought to be for a 2.0 release.
But, who know where B.E.OS will go?
