According to WinBeta, Windows XP Service Pack 2 has just been pushed back a bit further than originally expected. These delays will effect both the second Release Candidate along with the Release to Manufacturing/Release to Web. The following are the new expected delivery dates: RC2: May 26th, 2004 (previous date was May 12th) and RTM: July 21st, 2004 (previous date was June 23rd). However, MSFN has different dates to report.
I’ve been using RC1 since it came out (and the beta before that) and its awesome!
Firewall stuff is broken. It allows many IM clients to bypass it and also VMWARE does not work for me atleast on that. Only thing that I am glad is that FIREWALL is has one of the best interfaces that one can imagine. Easy to handle programs and add/remove from it. Besides that IE has been updated and it is basically same stuff which has been there for so long like pop up blocker. Well one time IE showed MSN.com to be dangerous site LOL
I like a lot of the additions it has brung but it has borked a few things for me. WinPT no longer works. Extracting from a zip file using the built in zip functionality now generates an access denied error – switch to winrar and it works fine. Firewall doesn’t remember apps allowed all the time. Frequent lockups. I know a lot of people have no problem with it but I for one am glad I only use Windows on the laptop if this is what I have to look forward to.
I’ve been using RC 1 since it was released to the public. I’m liking the features it has brought to the table, in regards to security. Ran into a problem . . . for some reason it keeps telling me I don’t have anti-virus installed, but in fact I have Norton installed and running perfectly. That’s the only REAL bug I’ve seen.
The things I’m not liking with SP2 thus far is the amount of dialog boxes you must click through in order to do anything on the web! This is bugging me GREATLY! How many times do I have to click Yes in order to do a download and install it!!!!
But I’m happy they FINALLY got pop-up blockers built into IE! I bet ad agencies are pretty pissed about that little feature now built in. Personally I’m shocked Microsoft actually did it, since most of the install base uses IE. It should be interesting to see when SP2 goes RTM.
As long as they’re taking their time do a quality job, I’m sure that few of their users are gong to complain too terribly much.
It’s not like popup revenue will disappear overnight. People will be using versions of Windows prior to XP SP2 for many years to come, and MS has said they’re not releasing upgrades to IE as a free standalone downloads anymore.

Not that I really care one way or the other, but I’m sure that MS thinks of this as “incentive to upgrade,” and it really is. For the first time in their history, they may well have a truely decent product.
By extention (and certainly NOT taking into account the horrible UI designs seen so far) Longhorn should be a fantastic product.
